back muscle pain

    Bad pain in my back since Friday.
    After my Thursday evening gym routine i had a little soreness in the muscles of my back on the right side, a little below my shoulderblade.
    I've felt it before, so no biggie.
    Friday evening i was back in the gym just for a run, and to top-off some more ab work. On the treadmill the pain was hurting pretty good but i just tried to block it and pike on.
    This seemed to work, until i stopped running.
    I found my back was totally rigid and to bend over at all incurred a lot of pain, the sort that forces your breath out.
    Ab work was out of the question.
    Since then it's been uncomfort, some sharp pain, painkillers and tiger balm.
    In fairness it's definately on the mend and I'm thinking at this rate after a week it should be mostly healed. But my dilemna is not being able to pinpoint when i injured something. Because on Thursday i completed my routine and at no time did i feel an injury.
    So i'm not really sure what exercise or lift i was doing when it happened.
    Obviously when i go back to the gym it'll be touch and go.

    Do you think bicycle kicks could injure this muscle? That's the only exercise i did more of.
    Also maybe the injury was actually fairly insignificant until i ran on it.
    Sure feels that way.
    Just strikes me as a bit odd that a muscle injury on yer back could become like 10 times as injurious if you run on it.

    Doesn't sound like a muscle injury to me. More like a muscle spasm - very common on the back but usually the lower back. Your injury sounds like it's in the thoracic area, which is usually caused by overdoing twisting motions

    Are you very inflexible? have you been doing loosening stretching exercises regularly?
    If not this could be a warning you're heading into chronic back trouble if you don't deal with it

    stay away from tiger balm or any heat when ot comes to muscle pain/injury/spasm.
    Cold is always the way to go. Heat just creates more bloodflow to the area, whaich is the opposite of what you want if there is any kind of inflammation.
    It's very hard to say what it is through description, but a quick session to a sports masseuse / physio (prefereably the former) should make a huge difference.

    I wouldn't worry about it being a chronic back injury tbh, just sounds like a muscle thats under may be inhibited and needs a little treatment.

    i work in Clonskeagh and live near Rathmines.
    Pain is still there. Hurts pretty bad when i tip my head forward actually.
    In fact i was in the gym yesterday just for a little exercise. Stayed off the treadmil but was on the stairs/stepmill thingy.
    Was able to do it but it may have aggrivated the injury a bit because it was an uncomfortable night last night, stiff and painful back this morning.
    I suppose i may entertain going to a physio or something, obviously depending on what it costs and just hope i'm not wasting my time.
    But a professional opinion may be nice to hear.
    Bollox going to a GP.
