Apologies if this is in the wrong forum.

Im looking for some advice from gym users. Im worried that if I go into a sports shop theyll just point me in the direction of the most expensive pair. Have to get a new pair of trainers, as im finally forking out the cash to join a decent gym, but I want to get appropriate footwear. Any brands you would or wouldnt recommend?

    Any advice is appreciated.

Mick Downling's shop in Terenure gets mentioned a lot for running shoes. I think he and his wife do a lot of running themselves from what other people have said here in the past.

For the gym you don't really need a running shoe. It depends on what you want to do in the gym. A bit more info maybe.

asics kayano for anything other than competitive running and even a bit of running on "clean" grass in your barefeet is excellent to strengthen tendons and ankles twice a week on your recovery days

I bought Asics runners from Mick Dowling's shop in terenure during the weekend. The Gel rocks!
Him and his wife are very knowledgeable about the type of runner you need whether its suited to your running style. Bring along your old runners if you go there so they can check them out!
    Highly recommended! :)

kayano's are a bit pricey aren't they? Why spend so much on a shoe if you don't need to? He only wants a cross trainer for the gym really. kayano's don't suit everyone.

depends if you are going to to doing alot of running or just mostly weights and cardio machines - then i would suggest a crosstrainer as they are more robust and will last you longer and have good stability. Running shoes tend to be alot lighter and they don't last as long. It's up to you..

When I started in the gym, i only had a fair of Nike Cortez. I was only going to do weights in the gym and stay of the threadmill.

Anyways, i got myself a new pair of trainers for my holidays, and since i was only going on one holiday, i could use the trainers for the gym.

I got a pair of Nike Shox in Foot Locker in The Square for 70euros. They are comfortable and feel great on the threadmill.

Being a she doesn't make a huge difference. I'd go for a decent pair of asics, they don't have to be pricey.
As for Neuromancer's post. Nike Shox are for fashion and perhaps use in the gym. They are not a running shoe. I have a pair myself but wouldn't dream of running in them, I run in Asics.

i cant speak for athletic sport but i know for most of the weight lifting exercises that my puma's have a flat sole which helps me balance better and provides me with a more level balance. handy for squats etc.

foot locker realy is more for fashionable shoes! pretty crappy for running shoes! i went in there and asked for running shoes and the person didnt even know if they had any! i ended up going to champion and buying myself a pair of asics! the best in my opinion for running!
