There comes a time in every man's life when he must go out and get a Wah pedal. This time has come and my search begins.

Having never used one before I am a complete wah virgin so I need all the info.

Do all Wah pedals do the same thing and sound the same?
Is there safe choice: Dunlop Cry Baby, Ibanez, Boss??

Johnny, tell me more about the Vox. I have the bog standard GCB-95 and it's just fat fat fat, at times i wish i could get a sharper more trebbly tone. It's quite good actually, it's just that sometimes i hit a spot with the pedal roughly in the middle and the sound is just, well, painful. Literally. It's some weird ass frequency that makes my ears go " ".

    What's the deal?

the wah on the vox has a better transition into the different frqencies...the cry babies are very abrupt sometimes...like the cry baby would suit hammet soloing but the vox is also good with mellow acoustic gilmour like ntones...hard to explain...i have a hot potz mod in my gcb-95 and it does reduce tyhe noise a bit...maybe that'd help oh ancient1

The Vox and Cry Baby seem to be the vintage sound from what I am reading and the Ibanez is more modern but somewhat confusing to use. Although some Ibanez users claim that they can get pretty much any wah sound they want.

Would the Vox model be the V847?

Modding is out cos I just couldn't be arsed!

Jimi is not a good example, tbh. He even used the mixing boards in the studio as instruments, ferchrisakes :p

I always thought Hendrix used a Vox mainly.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,592 ✭✭✭Ancient1

He used both the Vox and Crybaby, afaik. I think he used the Vox in later years, not sure though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,643 ✭✭✭magpie

    in later years

With Band of Gypsies, therefore crap. :)

Don't mind me, I have no truck with any music technology developed after 1970.

Go for a Vox V847 (if you can pick up a Keeley modded one, even better). Not too expensive if you pick one up on ebay and great sound. They go for around €70 before shipping. Ebay.de has a lot of them

[Start Heresy] Sorry guys, no Mitch Mitchell and especially no Noel Redding means Hendrix at 50% power. Hendrix only sacked the whiteys and hired Buddy Miles and Billy Cox because he was going through an ill-advised Black Power phase, much to the detriment of his musical output [/End Heresy]

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

    thanx for that magpie

Just doing some further reading on this and apparently Buddy Miles was known as "William the Concreter" because he had the same sense of rhythm as a cement mixer. :)

Common misconception that...Hendrix was a Vox man.
Always thought it was something to do with Dunlop doing some clever licensing or something...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,592 ✭✭✭Ancient1

he was going through an ill-advised Black Power phase

I bought a book the other week which apparently disputes the claim that his stint with Buddy Miles and Billy Cox was politically motivated in any way, even though the "Black Panthers" were on Jimi's case all the time.

Unfortunately i haven't had the chance to read it yet - now i'll just have to! :D

i think its cos dunlop has the sig model that people assosiate them with hendrix

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,592 ✭✭✭Ancient1

There's no doubt that Jimi used a Vox. One of his pedals actually ended up with SRV via his brother Jimmy. But he also used a CryBaby at times.

You want a wah with nice range? CB 95Q. Great standard pedal with great features. it took me ages to find the right one and it rocks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,433 ✭✭✭Quattroste

sei046. I don't know what the fcuk I want? I've never even played a wah before!! Thats why I asked........... so I could get some good advise as to which one Jimi Hendrix played and that he went througha Political anti white stage!!

    Sure don't we all?

I'm watching a few vox's and some others that I feel good about ;)

  • i have an 847 and it's lovely, does the job exactly how i want it, it's a nice no-fuss machine, picked it up for €80 on Gigsmart a few months ago.

    Any luck Ste?

I have been watching all ebays for some V847 bargains for weeks now. Missed some good chances around the time I bought the Tokai. 3 or 4 sold for between 50 and 60 euro

Anyway about half an hour ago I found a nice little bargain on ebay.com

    http://cgi.ebay.ie/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7347336532&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

Shipping in the morning. Total of 95 dollars incl fully insured airmail shipping which came to 78 euro I think. Will be marked as gift also so hopefully no import tax

For those who know, what would total be if I was charged import fees? And just to mention.. I priced one in Musician Inc last weekend for 200 euro so either way it seems I got a bargain. Theres ones on german ebay for 70ish before shipping and with 3 or 4 days left

I'll let you know what its like when it arrives. Been wanting one of these since I got the guitar

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Tax would roughly be a quarter of the item and shipping cost combined. More details in the Charter.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,204 ✭✭✭Kenny_D

So about 20 euro if I'm caught (not too bad either way). Its coming in with USPS so I think I should be ok. I hear its mostly couriers that are a lot stricter on this issue

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Yeah, about that. I doubt they'd bother collecting that. Either way, it's not a lot of money considering you're getting a half price wah :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,204 ✭✭✭Kenny_D

Yup and very happy I am about it too :p

Damn five mins ago I was thinking how much debt I'm in going back to college. Saw this, asked seller a question and 10 mins after I see it I've bought it. I'm too feckin impulsive. lol. Credit card bill came in this morning too with the amp and my OD808 on it (got a maxon chorus in the meantime too). Looks like it will be another Credit Union loan. Lol I'd be lost without those. But I have my ideal setup now and the vox wah was on the list anyway so its no more gear for me now til next year
