How much does boards mean to you?

Well i have been here just over a year now and i must say Boards has definitely grown on me....i'm a big fan!

So has boards latched on to you? Maybe you might be able to capture this by imagining you have be given a permanent site ban, how much would it hurt? (i really pity Kevin)

In my newbie weeks on Boards, i wasn't very nice to ecksor once, but i am a rare survivor of an ecksor ban (and very grateful he gave me a another chance)...think i just went into rebel mode :o ....now at that moment in time, i was only getting into boards and ..lol... nearly had a heart attack!

If you were banned before no matter how trivial the ban was, did you miss the forum/site or did you just not care?

Then recently i flipped out at somebody here in AH and got a months ban(really not like me)...now AH is my favourite forum and tbh i really felt like a tiny piece of me was gone for that month, it drove me crazy...

So sorry for rambling on, what does boards mean to you? Newbies, Mods, everyday users, veterans...is boards a part of your life?! And i don't mean like i'd drop dead without it or anything (or would i? :D )

I see myself being here for the next few years, basically as long as it's still going...hopefully one day i get a mod position :)

Boards makes me look busy in work coz when people look over they see me typing so they assume i'm working. :p

I would love a template that makes boards look like a word document or something.

No actually scratch that I would get even less work done.

Boards is the first site I go onto in the morning (or in today's case, afternoon), and the last site I visit at night.

Man it sounds like you and boards are married! :D Ah only jk, i know i'm probably like that too

As for boards at work, yeah it's a life saver!

Passes time while at work… I work for an internet company, so I is always online..

I like a place that changes hourly, unlike a chat room, this is for more topical and debatable, well, more so just dosing..

some aspects of boards have started to irritate me lately, but it can still be a great knowledgebase and a bit of a laugh

Care to elaborate? Though the good thing about boards is that that you get the mods and ocassionally the admins ears when you post a complaint

Been five years since I signed up, and I'm still here. I check Boards regularly, and am happy to have become the part of a great community, most of whom I have met in person and are exceptionally nice people (bar a few).

I have to say that Boards has taught me a lot, but what I'm most happy about is that it allows me to throw around topics regarding my own personal interests and hobbies, giving me the chance to teach or learn more about them.

Boards is constantly expanding it's horizons and bringing in fresh blood whom we can learn something from, or simply laugh at if they act the muppet and get flamed all the way to the Boards Prison, either way is good.

I adore going to the drinks sessions that are set up, because thats when you truly get the community feeling (The fact that most people here are willing to meet up with the rest and have some general fun and malarchy) but besides all that it's a great read, the Boards team is great, and there is a lot to be had here. I have made many friends here and, thankfully, only a few enemies so it was certainly well worth it.

Well while you are logged on to your account no you cannot, your account is banned from AH and you cannot even view the forum unless you logout, but it doesn't matter you couldn't post and thats what counts.

Many people foolishly try and create another account so they can post in their banned forum but that results in a permanent site ban.

well, for one, i think its gotten very 'cliquey' with all these secret societies. Used to be there was the illuminati and the knights of comeonbanus and that was what you made do with by gum! now its gotten well out of hand. But anyway, thats just one thing tho..cant be arsed going into any other details.. :p
By and large its a very good site to kill some time and one of my most visited over the years ive been here

Boards doesnt mean too much to me but its a board i post on frequently like a few other boards. Afterdawn.com and Isohunt.com for example are other boards i post on.
I think people get too attached to boards though as if its their god given right to dictate how people even abbreviate words or use acronyms. Sometimes boards becomes a place where people rant about eachother's posting styles a lot. Sometimes I find that some other forums have a more let back attitute about how people post.

And you've been on boards for four years with just under 150 posts?

But yeah, I like coming on boards. Once news headlines are announced someone posts it up on boards and I usually see it on boards before anywhere else! (radio, paper, tv, etc..) I haven't been here that long but I see 'relationships' forming between regular posters which is cool, it's like another group of friends you have on boards.

I agree, there is a great tight knit community spirit on boards and most of the time people get along great. Thats what i like about it and the team, yeah it's great, they really deserve a pat on the back.

    Lol...
    Boards Prison

Yeah 150 is kinda weird for that lenght of time, though im here a year and only have nearly 400. i just took it slow the first couple of months, im taking off now

Boards doesn't mean much to me. There are other discussion boards that I do frequent that have more interest for me. I have friends on many of them, many from other countries, who I have met through them. There are far less posters than here so you get used to people there and to know them to a certain extent.

it is handy though that most people on here are from ireland and well you can meet them easily and stuff.i met another guy from boards yesterday and i slept on a couch of a guy on boards last night when i came up looking for accomodation.

Boards is responsible for me meeting some wonderful people, often getting drunk with them at the same time. I've been able to talk about things that interest me, I've gotten to read some of the most amusing stuff I've ever seen, I've even gotten to run an RPG here.

It's pretty indispensible to me at this stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,756 ✭✭✭vector

Boards is an invaluable source of empirical information, for example when I started using [product name] I wanted to know [simple question] but the [company name] webpage course was tosh... but boards users had the real story

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,818 ✭✭✭Bateman

Agreed, boards is top of the heap for tech stuff anyway I'd say. I've watched it grow in the past few years and it's maintained a community spirit, which is kind of non-mainstream, and for what's become such a massive site, that's good going.

I've become addicted tbh. Didn't use it so much when I first joined, or indeed when I joined under this monikor, but in the last 3 months it's taken over my life! I Can't Escape!!!!

It's too late for me, but...

YOU STILL HAVE A CHANCE, TURN OFF YOUR PC BEFORE YOU BECOME LIKE ME!!!! RUN! RUN LIKE THE WIND!

    ...Ahem.

    Yeah, Boards is pretty cool...

Not boardsie in particular but you find stuff on message boards that you might not come across on websites or email - mad, funny and interesting stuff.

Boards is a good read from time to time. Good for sorting out broadband problems. But I feel like there's been an influx of mad people recently. There's a hell of a lot of new people regged in the last few months (mostly cool people). I do find myself wading through more and more bullcrap though, and becoming less patient with it. I'd hate to be a mod. That could be more of a problem with my attitude/opinion than others though - unless other peeps agree with me.

Em, yeah. T'is good to 'ave an Oirish corner of d'interweb.

I did that when i got the ecksor ban, i was only new and didn't realize that it just wasn't the done thing. You were banned from PI? Well that would bother me a little bit, i like to post in that forum sometimes, it's nice to help!

Pro wrestling! Doesn't appeal to me at all either

Lol yeah it's very annoying isn't it!!! It should be moved to lets say 5am to try an cater for the night hawks like ourselves

I think i might actually make a suggestion about this now in Feedback if anybody wants to lend any support....

Yeah i found that quite annoying while in the states as i used to check out boards in the evening over there which would clash with the back-up period, a 5am back up would suit more night owls here and those boards users on eastern and central time in the USA, however it would be of no use to the americans on the west coast, but bah, you can't please everyone. I wonder when is peak traffic time on boards ? and when is the witching hour ie. when it get's its least amount of hits.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,488 ✭✭✭Goodshape

I also like boards. It's up there with the likes of Wikipedia and Google for the best sites on the 'net. Living in europe it also serves as a connection to whats going on back home, which is good.

And look at the likes of the Film Production forum - it's been live about a week now and already the first Boards Film Festival is being planned. Not to mention the BoardsStock's, the various piss-ups, paintballing, charity drives, etc... bloody great stuff.

Defenitly the best Irish website I've ever come accross.
    gazza22 wrote:

I'd agree with that. 5am would be 6am for me, so I might actually take it as a cue to go to bed this time ;)

There are stats somewhere I believe. Can't remember where though.

When I first found the site, I loved it and would spend hours on here, especially at night (yeah, the 3am thing annoyed me too), but then I somehow just stopped coming here. I think it was the combination of the new look (which I still don't like) and starting in a job. Now I just come here very irregularly (maybe 5 or 6 times in the last year), mostly to check up on Irish news, which is especially handy now that I'm living abroad. I've never really missed the site (it's nice to have it here, no doubt, but I never got withdrawal symptoms or whatever you want to call it) and I think it'd probably be hard to get back into it if I wanted to, what with all the new posters and new forums, etc.

Might have been an overuse of brackets in that post.

The stats show a definite plummet in traffic around 3am.

I didn't make up that joke, the credit goes to ecksor

It pretty much speaks for itself how much boards means to me. If, on average it takes me 1 minute to make a post, then I've spent 27 working days posting since I joined (7 working days per year, you could take it out of my holiday allowance ffs). That doesn't even come near the figure for time spent just browsing.... :(
