    You a trinner?

Join Sci-Fi. Gamers is OK, some other societies might catch your eye. Phil and Hist have some good debates and famous people if you are interested (going to see one is worth the membership fee), otherwise avoid, avoid, avoid......

Don't worry too much about joining all and sundry, as you can take out membership later on in the year if you want.

I paid my dues for gamers long, long ago. Happy memories of being in 4.4.1, playing mtg and smoking cigarettes :)

Looking forward to a couple of these. If they give out as much condoms as they seem to, I might just try to make that fort. Wow that'd deadly.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,325 ✭✭✭Frankiestylee

Make sure you make the door to the fort out of those extra thick safety condoms.... cause the door is the first place attackers will go for

I can't believe nobody has mentioned the Card Soc. it's all the rage over on the tcdsu website... quite the society apparently.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 578 ✭✭✭wayfarer

    Where abouts?

Maybe it's coz the guy who ran the soc last year, turned it around from about 16 members to a couple of hundred, is the Ents Officer this year. Could he be abusing his powers?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,280 ✭✭✭regi

Do they play poker in the card soc? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,381 ✭✭✭snorlax

so you saw me! we had to photocopy 250 booklets about a hep b vacine(30,000 pages in all), as a box from the printers went missing. i was probably marching over to Foster's place with a box of them when you came back down (and probably watching the wedding that was going on at the same time;)!).

supprised you weren't sunbathing today! it was 18 degress celcius at 4 pm today.

I'm goin to form a gang to squash out all you computer nerds and Star Trek fans.

    Drink.

Freshers scurry to make friends for the rest of their life in the 5 days. There's always events to suit your tastes. I remember last year the Hist had a massive night out, DURNS room was open nearly 24/7, Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have the annual Treaty Debate, Labour had Pat Rabbitte in etc etc. All the societies try rope you in during the night time.

Try make friends in Freshers' week - just talk to people if you can. And bring some money to join societies. I know I joined more than 20, and only really made use of about 5; but I hadn't put all my eggs in one basket and hung around my favourite ones. I'm into politics and I know I spent most of the week arguing with each of the parties and joined the one with the people I got on with the best.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,945 ✭✭✭cuckoo

There's lots of events on throughout the week, and stuff in the evening as well.

The classic freshers week involves meeting ppl that are doing your course, being so thankful to have met ppl who are on your course that you hang around with them, then by the Friday of Freshers Week you realise you have nothing in common with these ppl beyond your course, and in fact you really don't like them at all. You then spend the next 4 years avoiding them.

It's also known as 'f**k a fresher week' by the returning students, all those people sitting on society stands and running events, well, a lot of them are there to check out the new blood. Remember, the SU shop sells cost price condoms and they're usually given out on the SU stand throughout the week.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

    Obligatory Fresher :D

why do you think i'm returning in time for freshers week? :D

    Freshers week is ****ing fantastic.

    Things you should do!
Get every single piece of free drink you can
Join all the big societies, Hist/Phil/Players/Dubes/Law(if you're a lawyer or have lawyer friends)/

Also if you're looking to score, the hottest people are always in the Jazz soc, who have incredibly good looking guys, and Surf club, who has incredibly good looking girls.
Law class is where most really hot girls end up, not BESS anymore, so if you're trying to score, go to the Law Soc events.

Make sure you go on all the nights out if you can. If you can't, defo do something on monday night, surf club normally have somethign cool on.
then take tuesday off, although it is law night, see above... :)
Then uber party on wednesday and thursday, and then chillax on friday.

Also, go in the sumo suits, they rock.
Go in with a group of friends, as someone who has worked the stand, you're more likely to get cooler stuff if you are in a big group, and they will spend more time telling you cool stuff.

    Some warnings:

Do not go on the library tour

Do not go on the computer tour, unless you're a computer retard

The SU as a whole are a joke in college, to anyone who isn't involved in the SU. Ignore them. The people on their stands are paid to be there, and are thus not much fun [That said the top people do some good work]

Don't dress up!!! You'll look stupid! Just dress in college cloths, jeans and a t shirt or something.

If a 2nd/3rd/4th year talks to you individually, he/she is trying to score you or get you into a society :)
