    Showering beforehand is more a matter of courtesy to other people I think. The water will be cleaner if everyone does that. In some pools there is a rule that you must shower beforehand.

    Both.

    Don't know who would consider showering before only, unless you really like the smell of chlorine.

    Yeah I wash/shower before hand and after swimming,nothing worse when you can acutally taste/smell someones BO while they are going by you while doing some laps.

    Doesn't every pool have a sign up asking you to shower before getting into the pool?

    Both...its courtesy to say the least. No wonder some places smell so bad.

    I always shower before swimming to remove some of the surface odour, if I haven't showered earlier that day. Naturally I need a shower afterwards, after the exertion.

    There are other benefits to showering beforehand:
    1. I've read in swimming manuals that pre-soaking the hair and skin reduces the absorption of chlorinated pool water by the hair and skin by up to 80%;
    2. If the showers permit temperature adjustment, a pre-swim shower allows you to gradually cool down the body temperature towards that of the pool water .... a handy thing if the pool water tends to be cold and you want to eliminate the initial shock when you jump or dive in. (How much of a wimp am I!)

    Pretty disgusting not to shower before swimming in a public pool. If I wanted to get your funky juices in my mouth I would ask you for tub of water from your bath.

    I know, we humans can produce some pretty grotty secretions! But if the water were more strongly chlorinated/adulterated to obliterate the aforementioned funky juices, it would be very harmful to the skin. (As it stands, I have to wear goggles for every pool I visit).

    Maybe car-wash style vertical spray jets could be switched on as people pass through the dressing room to the swimming area? Those who don't like to get their hair wet when swimming would be rightly peeved .. what a wonderful sight that would be :D

    On a similar note, I've noticed that the arena pool in UL does not have the obligatory dark brown footbath for those going swimming, unlike its older counterpart... isn't this just a bit dodgy? I have no idea what the reasons were behind its removal, but seeing as they're not offering walk-in chiropody services instead, I shudder to think of the melting pot of foot conditions one could pick up, even as a casual arena user.

    {Edit: for all the above reasons, I try to avoid swallowing pool water ..eeep! Shame it's so hard not to let it into the mouth.}

    That triggered the memory of Little Britain's queen of tearaways, Vicky Pollard ("yeah but no but yeah but don't listen to her .... Shut Up!!"), who in one sketch was asked to leave the Darkley Noone pool (I think she was splashing young kids), said she had to go wee before changing, stood still for about 7 seconds (without assuming a Pilates position - you can guess the alternative reason) and then said "right, I'll go change now."

    there is no need to shower before entering a pool except that it helps the area stay a little cleaner and saves expense on chlorine and other chemicals! the dirtier the water the more chlorine needed! chlorine is expensive!
    also if you dirty the pool deck it is very awkward to clean unless the pool is closed! as people are always walking through whatever it is etc! so it makes it a little easier for the staff!

    There is every need to shower before a swim no matter what as far as Im concerned.As I've said earlier I have in past gone by some people swimming who reeked of that days sweat or even some after a work out on machines.I think some people think that once they are in the pool before a shower that they are clean,lazy gits.

    Chlorine is also a nasty chemical. As you so correctly point out, if people swim without showering first, the rest of us are forced to swim in excessively chlorinated water. Not to mention the smell of stale sweat!

    And on a related matter, people should also shower between the pool and the sauna for similar reasons. The smell of sweat and chlorine in the sauna can be most unpleasant sometimes.

    no dude get it right they dont need to they should! there is no reason other then comman courtesy realy(except what i stated earlier) to why you should shower first(i work in a pool i no this to be true)

    this is not true!! the chlorine and dirt eliminate each other! chlorine dosent just build up! if it did you would need to drain the pool everyday and refill it every morning to be safe! like the water in the pool isnt changed daily or even monthly!they just regulary top it up with chlorine or ome deriverative of chlorine(and in some pools deionise the water as well as filter it but that is a rarity)

    I managed to take a big gulp of pool water this morning - (big wave generating swimmer in the lane beside me). It was enough for me to have to stop swimming and have a good cough. My first thought was this thread and an image of my lungs full of some smelly persons bodily secretions :o

    I need to be more careful before breathing in!
