How to get your PSP to work with Eircom broadband

This is a short explanation of how I got my PSP to work with Eircom broadband. With the PSP due out September 1st, it's likely that there will be some people looking to get their PSP connected, so here's how I did it.

A couple of caveats. Firstly, I am using a japanese PSP, version 2.0 firmware, but the network setup details will be the same. Secondly, I am using the Eircom broadband home starter wireless setup, and this configuration refers only to setting up the PSP with the Netopia wireless router. If you have a different setup, please don't assume this configuration will work for you.

Also, I am obviously referring to a wireless setup. I already have laptops running wirelessly from the router and this is how to set up the PSP to do likewise. I'm not talking about setting up a laptop to work as a connection point for the PSP - this is only about how to get the PSP to talk directly to the wireless router itself.

I am using WEP authentication and MAC address filtering in my wireless setup, so I have included instructions here on how to work with that. These instructions may not apply to you depending on your wireless configuration.

    1. Go to 'Network Setup' on the PSP and select 'Infrastructure mode'
    2. Create and name a new network connection (e.g. 'Eircom broadband')
    3. Make sure your router is turned on and select 'scan'. The PSP should find your wireless network and give you information such as signal strength etc. Select it to connect. If you can't find it, you are either out of range or your PSP WLAN switch is off (the PSP will tell you if this is the case).
    4. Enter your SSID (if required, the PSP may pick this up for you). It's case sensitive.
    5. If you are using WEP authentication, you'll have to enter your WEP key at this point. It's also case sensitive.
    6. The next screen is 'address settings'. Choose 'custom'.

You need to give your PSP an IP address on the network in the 192.168.1.XXX address range. Enter an IP (such as 192.168.1.60). Make sure it's not an IP address already assigned on your network. Then enter the following information:

Gateway IP address: 192.168.1.254 (your router)
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    DNS Servers:
    159.134.237.6
    159.134.248.17

    7. You'll then get a summary of your settings. Confirm them and select 'test connection'. You should be able to connect from this point. If not, try restarting your router (this is what worked for me).

    Troubleshooting:

If you're not able to connect, try restarting your wireless router and ensure that your PSP's WLAN switch is turned on (the switch at lower left, which should be pushed to the up position). Also, if you are restricting access to your connection by MAC address, you'll need to enter the MAC address of the PSP in your router's list of permitted devices. The MAC address for the PSP can be found in the 'system information' menu item on the PSP. Finally, if you are still having problems, try turning the 'WLAN Power Save' settings to 'off' on the PSP. This setting can be found in the 'Power Settings' menu item on the PSP. Here is a checklist you can go through.

    - Have you restarted your router to accept the new wireless connection?
    - Are you using MAC address filtering and have you entered the PSP MAC address correctly in your list of allowed devices?
    - Is your WEP authentication key entered correctly (if you are using WEP)?
    - Is your WPA authentication key entered correctly (if you are using WPA)?
    - Ensure your router is set to support 802.11b and 802.11g (mixed mode)
    - Is your PSP WLAN swtich turned on?
    - Have you turned the WLAN Power Save setting to off on the PSP?
    - Did you enter your IP address settings correctly?
    - Are you sure you didn't enter an IP address which is already being used on your network?

    Futher information:
PSP infrastructure mode wireless setup: http://www.us.playstation.com/PSP.aspx?id=troubleshooting/infrastructure.html
    Eircom broadband support: http://broadbandsupport.eircom.net

I hope this helps a few people when the PSP comes out next month. The PSP browser is decent and it doesn’t support flash either (for now) - which is great.

Good work with the info. Don't have eircom myself, but i'm sure the info is similar to what may be needed to connect to the hotspot locations unless its all auto configured when you connect.

I wanted a wireless router, but eircom just won't help. I'm stuck on DSL cable modem. :(

I can't get my psp to work with my router. It detects the network fine but when I try to connect it gives one of two errors depending on its mood:

A CONNECTION ERROR HAS OCCURRED (80410D11)

    or

A CONNECTION ERROR HAS OCCURRED (80410D09)

I've tried everything I can think of:

    1 - disabled WEP
    2 - enabled/disabled DHCP
3 - enabled/disabled MAC address filtering on router
    4 - forced the router to 802.11B

but it has made no difference.

I know the wireless is working because I was able to play wireless Lumines with a friend.

Did you ever get this to work? I found that restarting the router (both via software and physically turning it on and off) got everything going for me.

If you have WEP authentication turned on, you'll need to get that password, simple as that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,010 ✭✭✭besty

any suggestions on what to do if i cant remember the WEP password?
Im such an idiot. Is the wireless capability good?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,653 ✭✭✭m_stan

You'll have to change the WEP password on the wireless access point/router. This will also mean you will have to change it on all devices that connect wirelessly.

Can I effectively cancel the WEP password on the router or what? I can't seem to connect to the router through my web browser either...I'm in a bit of a pickle

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,653 ✭✭✭m_stan

yes you can, but to do that you will have to have access to the router via yoru web browser. only other way is to do a hardware reset to factory defaults which will wipe all settings and put you back to the stage where you have to configure everything.

if you dont know what you are doing, I would strongly advise that you avoid doing all of the above

if this goes on much longer, I would also advise opening a new thread since this has gone totally off subject

I set my PSP up with WEP. It keeps failing the test connection however if I ignore that I can make an internet connection fine (Basically skip it and use the browser as is).

I'm using a 3COM wireless router on UTV.ip. Here is what I did.
    Create connection.
    Enter WEP key
    Select easy setup
    (test connection skipped).

    Hey,
What is the WEP authentication key?

Can the IP address be any (192.168.1.XXX number) not assigned to my network?

Then in the last step, do you have to an enter this exactly?????
And what do you mean by (your router)????

Gateway IP address: 192.168.1.254 (your router)
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    DNS Servers:
    159.134.237.6
    159.134.248.17

Thanks to anyone kind enough to reply!:p

    Hey,
What is the WEP authentication key?

WEP is Wired Equivalent Privacy authentication, which is a security option with Eircom's broadband package. Check if you are using WEP by browsing to http://192.168.1.254.
Can the IP address be any (192.168.1.XXX number) not assigned to my network?

As I understand it, yes. Where XXX is a number in the 1-255 range and this IP is not already assigned.
Then in the last step, do you have to an enter this exactly?????
And what do you mean by (your router)????

Yes, you have to enter it exactly. 192.168.1.254 is the IP address of your router, and is also the "Gateway IP address" when setting up the connection on the PSP.

I have a WEP - Manual, and there isn't any number available? so do i just select none?

Which code is for the Default Router?

And do i need to use a proxy server, which is the next step?

Thanks again if you can help!
    :p

I was just wondering bout the following.

I have my psp setup to my house internet, grand sorted.

But it took effort looking up ips etc etc

When i go to somewhere wirless, how do i connect to them easily? must i change ips and all this jargon? whats the easiest way to just find the connection and hookup, woulda beenn better if the psp would jsut automatically find a connection.

    Thanks Manhog, that's very cool.

I have a Netopia wireless router with Eircom Broadband too. My brother has a PSP and the Internet used to work grand. All of a sudden it's stopped working. His browser will not connect to the Internet, even when we follow all of your instructions and the sigal strength is 100% and the test passes.

We've had error code 8001007D, 8041040F, and loads of others. Nothing will WORK and he's driving me mad!!! When googling I get all these things about MAC filtering and everything, but I'm not an IT student and I'm afraid to go messing with things like that, even if I could FIND it.

    Could anyone pleeeeeease help me?

your router could be "bricked" mine linksys netropia wgts or watever their called broke because it overheated and only worked half the time and eircom told us that they weren't aware that the linksys was even capeable of working with it so theres no help from their end!
