We're a 5 piece swing / funk rock band comprising drums, bass, guitar, tenor sax and trumpet.

The website is http://www.flashmyfrankenstein.com - We're recording in September so we'll have some MP3's up as soon as that's done.

Our next gig is headlining Eamonn Doran's on Thursday the 1st of September. In fact, we're still looking for a second support band, so if anyone's interested, let us know! It'd be nice to do a few gigs with a band who might have a somewhat similar sound (and, consequently, fans with somewhat similar taste), so let us know if you think that might be you! :)

The next gig after that is in the Voodoo Lounge on Thursday the 29th of September.

I'll post a reminder here closer to both dates.

    Cheers!

Hurry with the recordings. I'm looking forward to hearing what swunk music sounds like. I have a studio* you can use whenever.

I'll be away on the first, so good luck with the gig...

*i have all the equiment for a studio, but no actual 'room'

Just a reminder that Flash My Frankenstein are headlining Eamonn Doran's tonight.

And it goes, a little something, like this:

    Eamonn Doran's Temple Bar
    FMF: 10pm
    Hurricane Soul: 9pm
    Soft Cuddly Toys: 8pm

    Admission €5

If any of all y'all Boards folk make it, come up and say hello! Or else scurry off and flame us eternally for ruining your night. Either way, COMMUNICATE! :)

    Hope to see ye later...

    Hello Deathfunk,
How did your concert go? I am so very unfortunately sorry that I could not make it to last night's recital. I do promise to be there next time!

Oh sure, but you were in *plenty* of time to pick up your precious bass which I've been nuturing over the past 2 months... THEN YOU JUST TORE IT AWAY FROM ME! *sniff*

The gig went well (much thanks to Soft Cuddly Toys & Hurricane Soul for playing) with the exception of the sound being *appalling*, both on and off stage.

Normally I wouldn't complain about the onstage stuff because if someone has a problem they should just let the engineer know about it. But the thing is, I did just that and he refused to do anything about it! I asked him (nicely!) no less than 3 times to turn up the brass and guitar on my monitors and he just didn't do it. When questioned after the gig, he said he "didn't hear me". Apparently, the vocals and guitar were non-existent from the crowd's point of view.

I just don't get it. We did everything to appease this man. It appears very much to be a "guilty til proven innocent" situation, and even then...

Right, rant over and all in all, it was a good night. People were entertained and we got a great response, especially from complete strangers (always a good thing!). Hope to see you at the next one, Dr. Smut! :)

FMF play a spontaneous support to Alloy'd on Wednesday the 19th of September. We expect to be on around 8.30 or so.

We're going into studio (Guinea Pig / Castle Lane Studios in Malahide) the following day for 4 days to record 3 tracks. MP3's will be up soon after, so grab grab grab!

"Spontaneous Support" - Yeah, I'm not really sure what that means either ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,399 ✭✭✭WetDaddy

Just finished recording a 3-track demo in Guinea Pig Studios, Malahide. Clips will be up on the website shortly... Excited? Damn right you are :)

FMF are supporting Hurricane Soul in Voodoo this Thursday, the 29th of September. In the process of sorting out a kind of "Boards Rate" for any members who might want to come. Drop us a mail to flashmyfrankenstein@gmail.com if you'd be interested in a cheaper admission on the night!

Cheers for the advice Mr. Shade, but I reckon we'll stick with a real website for the moment :p

Ahem, that is to say it will be a real website when we get some real content up there!

    Mr. Shade... I like that...

Just wanted to say, it would be impossible to pass by a venue with "Flash My Frankenstein" advertised outside and not go in to check them out. Has to be the most savage name for a band I've heard in a long time.

Meanwhile, I'll be there on Thursday for sure. Voodoo's just over the river from my gaff, looking forward to it. Roughly what time will yiz be on stage, don't want to be late.

EDIT: Just spotted you've been recording in Guinea Pig. What did you think of the place? We've been recording the drums for our album out there and so far it's sounded superb. The whole moving wall thing with the various textures for different acoustics is so cool.

Cheers Robbie, really appreciate it! It's strange, we were a bit apprehensive about the name, but the response to it has been good and those who like it seem to really like it... :)

We'll be on at around 20.30 or 21.00. There's only two bands on that night, so it's a kinda late starter. Hopefully, we'll have a few copies of the demo ready (although they're likely to be minus artwork 'n' inlay for now!) so I'll keep you one. Be sure to come up and say hello, I'm the tall, gangly one :)

Edit: Forgot to mention that the sound in Guinea Pig is incredible. It's mostly down to Keith and Mark really really knowing their stuff (they put a lot of thought into designing the live room, acoustically speaking). On top of that, they're really nice fellas and were on exactly the same wavelength as us, so we couldn't have asked for anything more! 3 full tracks in 4 days isn't bad going, given our setup.

Well played last night, Sean! Sorry I had to leave pretty early, but caught most of your set, and really enjoyed it. Musically it sounded to me like a mix of Fun Loving Criminals and Sting, with some lovely and unusual chord progressions and horn section harmonies thrown in for good measure. Particularly liked a song you played about 5th or 6th, can't remember the lyrics though, something about Indians?? Good song though! (as you can tell, I'm not a lyrics guy :) )

Anyway, well played, I'll go see you again so be sure to post it up, or PM me when you're on again, I've already recommended you to some people so hopefully will bring some heads with me next time.

    Robbie

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,399 ✭✭✭WetDaddy

    Hey Robbie,

Thanks for the compliments. We really appreciate it! Always nice to hear specifics too (i.e. what you said about chord progressions, harmonies, etc.). That song's called "Indian Giver" and is actually our newest one, so glad you like it.

Actually had a demo for you there, but it's probably best you didn't get it then: We're going back into Guinea Pig to master it in the next week or so. We'll have a "finished" version then, and that's why I've been holding off on handing out the MP3's.

We're playing the NCAD Fresher's Ball next Thursday. Not sure what the ticket deal is with that yet, although I suspect it might be only open to NCAD students. I'll post details later anyway, and I'll definitely PM you about the next one.

Thanks again for coming along to the gig!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,399 ✭✭✭WetDaddy

Flash My Frankenstein will be headling the Oceanic Stage at the NCAD Fresher's Ball on Thursday the 6th (why... that's tomorree!). We'll be on at 12:30, so there promises to be plenty of drunk people "at that stage", if you'll excuse the pun.

It looks like the tickets are only available to NCAD students, but if any of you are going, come up and say hello. Or touch us. That's what we like.

Also, there are a few unmastered clips up on the site (http://www.flashmyfrankenstein.com) for the curious amongst you. We'll have full MP3's up once we've the tunes mastered, which is scheduled for around 15th of November.

Gah! Sorry, it's €5 and his been fixed now. My tiny brain couldn't handle two numbers at the same time, since one of them was in the 24-hour clock.

    Cool homeslice, see you then.

Alrighty, who wants some unmastered MP3's from our demo? Huh? HUH?!?

Recorded in Guinea Pig studios, Malahide.
Engineered by Mark Reidy & Keith Lawless

We'll be heading back into studio to master these tunes in November, so I'll replace them then. As usual, feedback (good and bad!) is much appreciated!

Ah Mr. Boyd, good of you to join us!

Well, those MP3's are unmastered demos of what's to come! What's to come bring... ahem... the mastered version of the demo, which will be ready on the 21st of November. I can meet up with you then or post the finished product out to you, if you like.

Post here what you think of the MP3's, if you listen to them!

Cheers Flashling, always nice to hear good things. We're going back into the studio this Sunday to remix & master those 3 tracks, so I'll replace the MP3's once I have them.

Oh, and for the record, Flashling's username is just a coincidence! Ain't no FMF affiliation! Although I must say I approve of the name... Good work!

    Hey Sean,

Just wanted to say I enjoyed the gig in Dorans last night. The band are tighter than the last time I heard, you're singing great yourself too! I really did enjoy all the tunes this time, there's some very catchy stuff in there - toe-tappingly good all round.

My major gripe last night was that the FOH sound was diabolical. Seriously, last night's front of house mix was so bad it was bordering on being illegal. The last time I was in Dorans I vowed never to go back because of this, but last night was the last straw - I'll never, ever set foot in the kip again.

Still though, the gig was enjoyable because the band has quality. Looking forward to hearing you soon in a real music venue. Keep us posted!

    Robbie

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,399 ✭✭✭WetDaddy

    Hey Robbie,

Cheers for the message, it really means a lot to us. Strangely enough, we feel exactly the same as you! We were very unhappy with the sound on stage (and we heard that off stage wasn't great either). All I could hear was trumpet in monitor. Literally, nothing else! No guitar, no vocals, nothing!

Although Ken, the engineer, is a very nice guy and honestly has done do a great job for us before, we were at the venue since 18.30 and only got our sound check at 20:50, 10 minutes before we were on. So, it's impossible to get a decent sound in such a short mix.

By and large, we've been let down by Doran's too and after last night, it will take something very significant to get us back there.

Pity you didn't see the Sugar Club gig last week. The sound in there is fantastic and overall, it's a great venue. There's a good chance we'll be playing there again in February, possibly even headlining.

Anyhoo, thanks again for the post. Will definitely keep you posted about the gigs :)

Funny you should say that, cos that's all that could be heard out front until after the 2nd or 3rd song when you asked him to turn it down onstage. After that it was fine, it was turned down to the same volume as the rest of the noise the engineer was creating.

The drums were strange, in that the bass drum and snare actually sounded ok, probably sounded better than anything else onstage. But each time the drummer hit a tom, it sounded like it was clipping somewhere in the desk, producing an ear-splitting crack that ruined the whole sound. It was like the input gain on the gates for the drums were turned up too much, and the engineer didn't cop it. Disgraceful really.

The only way I could hear the bass guitar was by moving up closer to his amp, cos there was no definition coming from the bass out front, only a big muffled mess of low frequencies. At times it was so bad that it was hard to know if the bass was even in key or not. Individual notes were totally lost.

Your own vocal was very good until the 3rd or 4th song, when it was inexplicably turned down so low that I couldn't hear the words in the songs without straining, which is a shame cos your pronounciation as you sing is always very clear. Guitar was again lovely at first, but got way too loud in the mix towards the end, clouding everything else.

The mix just lacked any kind of instrument seperation, dynamics or life as we know it.

Sorry for ranting so much, but it really did p_ss me off last night. I don't know if it was a bad engineer, a bad sound system, or a combination of both, but I do know that what came from the speakers last night did not do the band any justice in the slightest. I didn't hang around for the other bands, couldn't wait to get out of the place in fact, did it get any better later on?

Man you really need to get inspired, those lyrics are bloody insulting to my ears mate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,399 ✭✭✭WetDaddy

Cheers for the constructive criticism, franklern. Your bouquet is in the post.

Pity the lyrics don't appeal to you. If you didn't realise, there's this other stuff hitting your ears in the background. It's called "music". Now, we might actually take your suggestion on board if you'd something positive to say about this "music" I speak of...

But obviously lyrics are the only thing that do it for you. And while we appreciate they're important, we can't compete with spoken word or anti-establishmentism or epic soliliquays about goat-spotting or whatever it is your fond of.

But then again, we wouldn't know what your fetish is cos all you had to say was "bloody insulting to my ears mate".

"Let's go out for something to eat so I can see if I like your teeth"???

Do you actually have a ex-girlfriend doing time? Probably not.

And what's with the say what in the middle????

This is constructive criticism by the way, I'm all for new Irish music, especially bands as big as yours, it's admirable. However...

You're very talented blokes who make good music and probably work well together, keep on keepin on and that, you will be very good in time. But what you're trying to say in your lyrics need a lot of work, to be honest they're atrocious, anybody could be spouting that ****, it means nothing.

    All the best.
