A feather in the cap for the many 'naysayers' I guess.
They had talent, and made a change from the dirge that was (and is) filling the charts, so they'll certainly be missed.

But the fact that they've split so early means that they'll be labelled a "fad" or something, which is a shame IMO.

I heard the bassist Franky had left, and Justin wanted to work on some zany celebrity darts tv-show, but I hadn't heard they broke up.

    Ditto.
He's working on some of his own stuff away from the band & the brummer got kicked out for some or other reason.
But afaik, they haven't actually split up!

Can we put this in the humor board for the funniest post of the month, nay, the funniest post of the year? I'd certainly vote on it!

All i can say is i was shocked and appalled when the ****eness were given the headline slot on the main stage at oxegen last year. That was by far the worst headlining band choice they could have made... unless they made goldie coloured chain the headlining bad. They're ****eness nearly matches the darkness's.

They were a fad. They had no talent. They'll be forgotten about like Six (was it Six or Seven... whatever that band was called :p) and all those other winners (whose names i can't remember at the moment) from those pop-idol type shows. I'm just glad they didn't release a second album. At least Ronan Keating has some talent, no matter how ****e i think he is, i have to give him that.

Nope, one hit wonders who never delivered on their early promise. To be put in the bin along with Kula Shaker and Mac and Katie Kisson (Chirpy Chirpy Cheap Cheap, 1971).

the darkness was terrible, they hit it big like in june and they annouced as headliner for oxegen a month later.

They were cack. I had the unpleasant experience of sitting through 45 minutes of them at Metallica and luckily never had to listen to them again.

How many albums has he released? Quite a bit more than the darkness, and they all sold enough to make it worth his while to make another. I do think he's ****e, but he has staying power. And you only have staying power if you have some kind of talent.

I don't know, I mean, Ronan Keating was getting his songs written for him or co-written, he might be writing them now, but I think the Darkness were fairly well able to play their guitars, in the moderately fast soloing type way...I would have thought they were putting more effort into becoming musicians than he did.

I was in the new band tent listening to "the shins" at the time, and they were a damn sight better. I'm really glad i saw them. Was well worth it!

Out of interest, did the darkness come up with their own name? Or did they use someone elses? Linky I don't think they were around back in '91.

Hey if they didn't it doesn't matter.....Metallica didn't come up with theirs either...

People who don't like the darkness can go really over the top sometimes. I mean saying they have less talent than Ronan Keating is ridiculous. The Darkness wrote their own songs, that's talent enough. If you don't like them fine, but some people do... and the people who don't seem to find that very hard to accept.

I personally think they're a very good band which can be letdown abit by the absurdness of justin hawkins, i mean he's just a little over the top in every way. I personally find that amusing and I also love his voice. Alot of people can't look past him or the media coverage the band got when they first came out... and actually listen to the music. I'm guilty of doing it with other bands, if I see something I don't like about them (e.g. the lead singer being a cock) I'll decide I don't like them without really giving them a chance. But in the end I'll more than likely give their album a listen and make an unbiased decision on it. I hated QOTSA when they first started getting massive airplay because I didn't really like Noone knows. I'm still not too fond of that song but they're now my favourite band.

There's plenty of other bands out there I hate that get lots of airplay (e.g. Green Day, to name one of hundreds) but I put up with it. So if you don't like the darkness just get over it, turn the tv off whenever they come on. Regardless of how much airplay they get, you don't HAVE to listen to them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,943 ✭✭✭Mutant_Fruit

I never judge a band on how much airplay they get. In fact, i rarely (if ever) listen to the radio. I couldn't tell you how much airplay they got. All i can say is i saw their video in TMF (not even sure if i still have TMF anymore :P) and i thought it was bolax. Friend of mine lent me their album, gave up listening halfway through (as i did with the new album from The White Stripes, it was dire!).

I make my likes/dislikes based on the album i hear. And i didn't like it.

IMO, the darkness were the best thing to have an impact on the charts in a very long time. They were overexposed and people got sick of them very fast, but can you come across a more talented band in the charts at the moment? I don't know much of whats in the charts at the moment, but nothing springs to mind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 752 ✭✭✭Spicy Lauren

At first I thought they were taking the p*ss out of glam rock, only to realise that they were actually serious about it.

I knew they would never go far from the first time I heard them.

They got their fame, it's all they wanted.
Now they can go away. Not a big loss.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 44,413 ✭✭✭✭Basq

As a matter of interest... where'd you get the information that they broke up? NME.com, TheDarknessRock.com or DigitalSpy.co.uk have nothing about it!

Jesus, have a sense of humor for **** sake and calm down.

    1. Darkness headlined Oxygen because Bowie got sick. If you didn't know that then I wonder what you were doing there in the first place!

    2. The Darkness are a ****ing joke, and they'll admit it! That's the whole idea.

And stop talking about 'talent'. There's no more hollow a point discussion. Believe me, from teaching I can see that 'talent' means pretty much **** all.

The Darkness had some great solid rock recordings. They also got the image thing down really well and I liked the way they really had balls (on of their first performances was on J. Holland, where the guitarist jumped onto of the piano during the solo!)

But saying that, they were doing nothing new, nothing special. It was just a bit of fun! And their success derived from the state of music at the time (which is still unfortunately the case) since the charts are full of idiot pop, pussy punk or stand-still-on-stage-like-a-bunch-of-loosers indie. It was nice to see the guitar solo get respect for a while, and it was nice to see performers with a bit of flair and energy (even if it was a bit kitch).

If you dont like The Darkness then don't go jumping on a ****ing band wagon by taking them seriously. I gaurentee you, they split themselves laughing at people like you.

Damn! And it was all going so well. TBH, i was a bit surprised they broke up when they did. Its not as if they even released a second album. Generally these bands release 2, and at most 3. After that they're gone. Usually the second flops big-time, and a third never happens.

Still, i live in hope. May the darkness die a horrible horrible death (the band, not the people in it :P) after their second album. Their rendition of "Street Spirit" made me want to throw rocks at the stage.

Hey Mutant what's your problem with the darkness. No-one cany deny that Justin Hawkins is a great guitar player by today's rock standards. He actually soloes! And he's technically one of the best singers around too, so calling them talentless is a joke. Could it be that you're just not able to handle proper rock n' roll? Is that why you keep mouthing on about how great Ronan Keating is? Go back to your Chris de Burgh albums, you should be safe there.

    Ooooooh smackdown :D

The Darkness are ok, they're not as great as the media made them out to be, nor are they as bad as some folks would have you believe. The boys can play their instruments, they don't take themselves too seriously and they've borrowed a few riffs from AC/DC and that's not such a bad thing :)

    Agreed.
Let's face it, if there were more old rock n roll acts around then The Darkness wouldn't seem to be such great shakes, nor would they be as hated (a paradox, I know), but they are unique in the context of what's around these days.
The music scene would be a blander thing without them (and, sorry, but to me it's pretty f**kin bland right now).

    .
Aye, but why were the darkness given the main slot ahead of a far superior band, Muse. I can only assume it was done because Muse were a bit dodgy, what with the drummers father dying not to long before the Oxegen gig and the organisers weren't sure if Muse would go ahead. But still, bad move. They could have left the headlining slot as an unknown until Muse could be verified, but obviously they didn't do that.
If Your Unheard Bands Went Mainstream Like Green Day Did Youd Start Hating Them Cos You Want To To Be Revin It With The Cool Unscene Scene
    .
I like green day. I've been listening to them for at least the last 4 years, probably more. I think its great they way they're getting more and more coverage with their new album. Why would i hate them because they're bigger now than they were 4 years ago? They're still Green Day. More coverage doesn't change how good a band is. Once again, hating a "popular" band is what people in secondary school do to be cool. I'd like to think i only hate bands because i hate their music.
Hey Mutant what's your problem with the darkness. No-one cany deny that Justin Hawkins is a great guitar player by today's rock standards. He actually soloes! And he's technically one of the best singers around too, so calling them talentless is a joke.
Fine, you're right, talentless was a step too far. But they definately were not the "savior of rock" or whatever twist you want to put on it. (How many saviors of rock have we had in the last few years? I think that shows what a dire state the charts are in). Personally, his singing irritates me. Combine that with the cheesy lyrics and I don't like it at all. As for guitar soloing, not my style either. Wouldn't listen to much of that kind of music.

Of course, cheesy lyrics done right are grand, i.e. The Killers. I like the killers, and i think they were probably one of the "big" bands of the summer. Really mainstream :P

    And i quote:

I think this guy hit the nail on the head though:

Interesting, because - "the darkness" cheese sandwich - brings up over 50,000 results. Well done on pulling up some random quote from some internet nobody, but I don't think most people, even their fans, think they're the saviours of rock. They're just better than alot of the crap around today, imo.
