Playing more than 1 sound at a time

Right this is something that's annoying the hell out of me. Currently only one programme can play a sound at a time. For example, normally if someone IMs me, gaim makes a 'ching' noise. But if I'm listening to music via rhythmbox then gaim makes no sound at all. Or if I'm listening to music and I start mplayer (to view a video file) then I get "[AO OSS] audio_setup: Can't open audio device /dev/dsp: Device or resource busy", and mplayer waits till I stop rhythmbox, then starts playing away.

This is ridiculus, it's 2005! How can I fix this?
