if you go into device manager, start->control panel->system->hardware->device manager
and click the plus beside mouse and pointing devices
if you right click the touchpad device and select disable, it should disable the touchpad, if the usb mouse is disabled re-enable the hardware, and try the other pointing device

On the older systems there was an option in the bios to disable the onboard pointing device, not sure on the newer models.

I have a hdmi cable connecting my laptop to me projector in my classroom. When I connect it, the mouse only lasts a few minutes then it disappears and the mouse pad doesn't work. How can I get the mouse pad to react when using the hdmi cable?

Most laptop touchpads have "tap to click" enabled, I can't stand it and disable it as soon as I set up a new laptop. With it enabled, if you tap anywhere on the touchpad, it will act as a click, with it disabled, you must click the actual left or right button to click. It might be easier for you just to disable this and it might solve your problem, while still allowing the trackpad (laptop mouse pad) to be used if necessary. Go to youtube and search "disable tap to click" and you'll probably find a tutorial.
