As a Galway city person myself i have to say i was pretty impressed with the amount of construction going on in limerick city especially with regards shopping facilities imparticularly the new jetland centre was just wondering what else is going in it besides another Dunnes stores..imho i think limerick needs a few better stores than dunnes the same thing is happening in galway were another two are being opened as well as a second m&s...

As far as I know there are a few small shops, Dunnes Stores being the main tenant there.

There is also a new shopping centre being planned for the Ennis Road just off the Coonagh Roundabout before the Greenhills Hotel. I heard this is supposed to include a cinema but don't know if this is the case.

its dissapointing that we dont have a m&s in limerick, such a big chain like that should be here instead of opening up more dunnes like u said jammy. isnt there a rumour that there guna put in a m&s in the royal george site on o'connell street?

I think everytime a new development is started or large property changes hands in the city the rumour is that M&S are opening there. As soon as the Royal George Hotel was sold this was the case.

Not sure what the current policy is of M&S but the last I heard they were not doing too good on the profits front and were looking at cutting the number of branches they had not expanding, especially outside the UK but this may have changed.

rumour has it that Marks and spenser is moving into what was once the royal george hotel. not sure how true this is though.

There certainly is a lot of building going on at the minute, but what exactly is going to fill all the units? By my reckoning there is the one project by the new Mollies, one on Bedford row, one in the George, one on Gerard Griffith St. The big unit at Taits sq looks good but is still empty, so can all these units be filled? These are all city centre developments, thats not including the 3 or 4 develops just outside the city boundary.

good point amazo limerick has most of the big stores already mainly located on the outskirts in the county area so it will be difficult to lease these city centre units due to the huge difference in rates + no offence to limerick city centre but its hardly a shopper friendly place like galway and cork city centre's

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,016 ✭✭✭Blush_01

I don't know, I mean I used to shop quite regularly in Limerick, and it's pretty easy to do so. Granted there's not the hugest range of shops, but everything's pretty close together and it's easy to get around. An M&S would be great though. Last year M&S did so badly that they were carried on the profits from their stores in Mary Street and Grafton Street in Dublin - not just here in Ireland but also in the UK. I think that's pretty impressive, and should give M&S an added incentive to increase the number of stores they have here. A new branch has just opened in Blackrock, yet if you're in Munster you have to go as far as Cork for a M&S - I think that's crap, frankly. Their food tastes good, their underwear is reasonably prices and they do some nice stuff, their clothes are of a much higher standard than that of Penneys or Dunnes. Limerick could do with a H&M too. But that's another story!

Very true Blush, Ireland is the only place they made a profit last year. Pretty sure there's one coming to Limerick.

H&M are definetly coming to Limerick. They had a recruitment advert in the Limerick Leader a few weeks back. Does anyone know where exactly on Henry St are the propsing to open?

Also does anyone have any idea when the crescent units will be open?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10 clubvinyl

apparently there's 27 units in the Jetland centre although some are Kiosks. BB's coffee are going in there, a music store (not sure which one) and yet another sports shop.

I don't know, maybe I'm confused in thinking you're confused, but it's Henry St. in Dublin they're opening on (Although I thought that it was on the Mary St. bit of the street). They're opening on two floors in the Ilac centre, almost right beside Roches.

I was a bit disappointed with their shop in Dundrum, but almost everything about the Dundrum shopping centre is disappointing. It's great to see the construction on the Jetland though. That Dunnes has looked a bit grotty since we went to SuperMacs as part of our school tour in primary school. I'm surprised I can remember back that far!

When is the opening date, of this store.

Marks and Spencers are not moving into the George its going back to being a hotel as they dont need planning permission. Rumours about that new shopping centre on Rutland and Patrick street are throwing about M&S as the main tenants. Personally I think that Dunnes should not be able to hold the main tenants in the 4 main shopping centres.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,133 ✭✭✭mysterious

IF dunnes move il blow it up! jokes, It would be insulting to have another Dunnes wen they can't manage the ones they have not to mention the two stores they have in the city centre, any plans on the Rutland st dev

The new Jetland store opens on Tuesday September 20th - its open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Seem a bit much.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,481 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Dunnes Stores in the new Childer's Road Retail Park has been open 24 x 7 and it seems to be successful so far. Even late on a Saturday night there are still a good few cars outside.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 96 ✭✭spinalsly

the jetland opened today, anyone been there yet and if ye have whats it like?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 80 ✭✭zachler

I was in there Tuesday afternoon. Looks nice. Roomy too, compared to the little hutch that preceeded it. It reminds me a little of Superquinn out in Castletroy. I didn't realise they'd put an underground car park in there too.
There's still a lot of landscaping work to be done and none of the smaller shop units have opened yet.

I was down there tonight and coming from someone who live`s just across the road its great its a big big change for this sid of the town and am delighted with it.
its real big and bright much much better then the park way.

ya i was in there today walking home from school, the place looks nice but it will be a better and more buzzing place when the units are filled up, hopefully some good chain stores will open up there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 80 ✭✭zachler

Game Spot will be opening there. Maybe Boots too.
What are BBs? Big Brothers? Jeesh...would it kill you to spell it out?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,811 ✭✭✭✭billy the squid

BBs is the actual name of the outlet.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 96 ✭✭spinalsly

bbs is a cafe of some sort, if my memory serves, i remember seeing one when i was in liffey valley in dublin

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,549 ✭✭✭scuba steve

Its a New Zealand cafe or something like that. Theres one in the Cresent near the cinema side. Its actually just called BB's. They have muffins, coffees, ice creams, things like that

I think Aldi will make a great addition to what is a hugh spree of shops coming to this city. Aldi do good quality item and cheapish prices. The quality of food isint bad either.

There are 24 new shops coming to the Jetland store. The total area of the shopping is 24,000 feet (squared) Dunnes have nearly 9,000 so it is the biggest Dunnes outside of Dublin, thats what I hear.

Have anyone visited the new B & Q tore, its massive!!!!!

They decided that months back! Sure the crowd who bought that have been doing it up for ages!

Well Personally I would consider the Cresent Shopping Centre to be a main SC since its double the size of any other in the city!
Also Arthurs Quay is very central in Limerick, so i would consider that to be in the top 4 SC's in Limerick, both of which have Tesco as main tenants

From what I've heard, River Island and A-Wear are supposed to be opening up in Jetland.
Apparently all the other units are supposed to be open by the end of October - but I haven't been out there yet so dunno how true that is supposed to be

MikeTyson and ricey, both your signitures are too large and are in breach of the sig rules.

Anyone know of anymore shops going into the Jetland Shopping Centre? it hasnt been a great success if you ask me! not much more people go there than used to go to the old Jetland!

Its really not doing well as far as i know.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,180 ✭✭✭1huge1

well ive never been there but i never shop on that side of limerick and to be honest there aint much to do on that side

i go to the cresent, childers rd,parkway retail and city centre

but it would be going way out of my way to go to the jetland and i suppose thats the same reason for a lot of people (yes i know a lot of people live near the jetland to)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,048 ✭✭✭Amazotheamazing

It seems busy enough whenever I'm there, maybe I bring the crowds with me, but the other units need to be filled soon. Realistically Dunnes have invested too much in it for it not to eventually be a success but how this will come about will be interesting.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,133 ✭✭✭mysterious

It will take a while for it to be at a succesful level, I'd say alot of the south side (other side of the Shannon) would'nt have heard of the store, if they haven't been around this side of town lately. Although the Caherdavin side is growing fast, Epecially onto the Clare Border, so it would be great for residents to shop here than having to criss cross the city to shop.

I haven't being there myself yet, but I've heard that Dunnes itself is good, and they have a wide range of shops. but as some said, the people who I know are not from there, and probably rarely go to that side of the city, as most, would go to City centre or Childers, or Cresent.

Matter of Interest is there anthing constructive yet to happen, at
the old oaklands(which is ground zero), Parkway centre.

I heard the rumour that Dunnes wanted to close their store in parkway and fully fit them into the 24 hour one accross the road.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 227 ✭✭youthacademy

is the jetland 24hr?? have been in there a few times, its fairly impressive inside there so dont no why its not doing so well(just going on what i read in this thread) maybe an M&S would go down well if it was in there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,915 ✭✭✭Poxyshamrock

about the development in the oaklands, do u mean the proposed development in parkway retail park, it gonna be a huge development on the left of the retail park down as far as singland motors. Its gonna be called Parkway Valley.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,944 ✭✭✭wingnut

Parkway Valley lol, don't know why it sounds funny but it does, like a Liffy Valley wannabe. Jetland is 24 Hour and its a great Dunnes (I prefer it to Childers Road, Parkway and Town). Very handy parking no fuss shopping day or night. The other units leave a bit to be desired, its not somewhere you would go to do other than grocery shopping like the Crescent. There is an Elverys, Pharmacy, Golden discs, Jeans wear or Jean Scene and one or two others. They are all small pokey shops though.

What do you mean there is nothing there, sure isn't Funworld accross the road!! :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 488 ✭✭ellenmelon

there's a boutique lynch hotel going in there..

limerick would do well with having a M&S somewhere definately..(especially for their girls underwear LOL) and maybe a couple of other male clothing stores cause it seems guys get left behind a wee bit clothing wise..
is it me or are their loads of dunnes for a city of 80,000+? they're grand like but jeepers! :)

Traffic will be cauotic when it opens along that stretch of road, unless the developer plans to build a bridge over the Castletroy rd or access to the local roads awell as a dedicated entrance to and off the old N7 instead of Ghost Islands which are inadequate. The Parkway roundabout just isn't big enough at this stage to take the demand of traffic that uses it, especially with the scale of development that is coming on at that side of the city. When they do decide to build it, they should knock the old SC and widen the road at the Parkway roundabout and build a train station there, as the rail line passes directly behind it. It would make a hell of a lot of sense. Thought I think this is the plan, but dunno what's set in stone. If this idea is brought forward then, there is defenatley hope for this parkway valley

Hey nothing wrong with it being called parkway valley. Groody valley sounds better.:p
