Right foods to eat for losing weight

Bear in mind that I'm not a fussy eater (love vegetables, fruit etc...) but I'm a vegetarian. I don't eat chocolate or any junk food and excercise everyday but can't lose weight.

I eat a lot of pasta and bread, is this a bad thing?

I'd really appreciate what foods will fill me up yet are not going to make me put on weight. I've looked at Nutritional sites on the web etc but it's all very complicated and confusing.

Would really appreciate any help as I know how helpful you guys are in this forum. Thanks.

    like he said ^
sounds like you are eating healthy all depends on how much or what else you are eating besides what you describe.
eg do you always have creamy sauces with your pasta as they are twice the cals
of tomato based ones etc etc.
stick up a couple of days of a food diary and people could help more...

What daveirl said. I'm a vegetarian myself, and in the past I was eating mostly the "good" foods, just waaay too much. If you can, avoid using ready-made or package sauces. Tomato sauce is simple - get a can of chopped tomates, throw it on top of the pasta, add some basil and parsley. You wouldn't even notice the difference, but it contains less than half of the calories (not to mention the additives).

Ah, that's already done with the other veg. The tomatoes are the last part :)

Are you eating white bread and pasta? I've changed over to wholewheat spaghetti and wholegrain bread and find them much better.

What Outshined said...there's good and bad pasta and breads....go for the healthier wholegrain options. There's nothing good about white bread.

I'm finding the wholregrain options tastier.

    Here's a little Recipe I knocked up.

    1. Cook some wholewheat pasta, drain.
    2. Lightly grate cheese on top, microwave for 60secs
    3. Slice baby tomatoes into 4 pieces and place on top.

Tasty, be careful on portion size

You should read "The Holford Diet" by Patrick Holford. Its all about Glycemic Load, very educational. He also lists a load of foods for you, for example changing from white bread to sour dough bread.

The little bit of Nutrition we did in Science always stated white bread wasn't good for you. Either way I prefer brown bread anyway.

Here's a question, can you eat as much fruit and vegetables as you want?

i'd imagine you wouldn't need to limit them. Most common fruits apple, pear, banana etc. contain a reasonable amount of fibre so any effect of fructose/simple sugars should (in theory) be offset by the fibre content.

The same could be said for vegetables which probably have less sugars in them than fruit.

To relate this to the OP's question, i would consider it a good thing to consume lots of fruit/veg even more so if trying to lose bodyfat as the caloric deficit could leave you missing out on som vits/minerals.

Eating pieces of fruit as a snack would help keep you filled and is far better than letting yourself go hungry then gorging on pasta and bread.

Bananas are to hunger as nicotine patches are to cigerettes.
