How do you address your mother?

Just realised I should have had 'Mam' on that list.

I'll assume that 'other' votes mean either 'mam' or atari jaguar...

"The Ma" although that usually earns me a slap round the head. "Mum" would be my preferred choice.

You forgot Mam. That has to be the most popular.

I've never called her by anything else other than her name.

I don't believe in labeling people.

Older people who still call their parents "mammy" and "daddy" freak me out

    Mam.

Incidentally, I didn't think Irish people used the word 'Mom'.

Same here. I would have though that word had more of a place in American society. Well it seems that way from the likes of Malcolm in the Middle and the Simpsons and their ilk.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,230 ✭✭✭OLDYELLAR

If im talking to her I usually say ma but if on about her i say her name to those who know her or me mother or me mam to those that dont.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,519 ✭✭✭Oral Slang

Mam or an odd time when I'm messing I use her name...
I can't stand hearing Mum - I think it sounds really posh & Mom sounds too american.
My mam hates the word Mum too, so every mothers day I get pissed off that there are still no irish companies making Cards that say Mam.

I particularly hate the way some newspapers refer to "mums" and "dads". Icky. Patronising. Foreign.

Her name... despite it unnerving some people

There aren't? You might have hit on a good business idea there. Mam cards. ;)

I generally use "Mum", plain and simple, my friend calls his mother, "Mom" all the time which just seems ubar American imho....

Also, on a slightly embarassing note, it wasn't until I reached the age of like 10 or something that I realised that my parents had names...I had just assumed they were called Mum and Dad...and didnt really think about it....It's not really that weird when you think that you're parents never really introduce themselves to you.."Hello child, I'm Bob" (which in the case of your mother...I'd be asking questions..)

Yeah I'm the same. Everyone thinks that I'm weird for it. I just never felt comfortable with anything but her name.

Sorry, I should have had Mam(my) in the poll. I'll just assume that 90% of the 'other' vote are Mam.
