Opinions on fretless

Dean Rhapsody HBF Fretless, (pic2), man this is too cool. Lightweight, well balanced, mid-aligned pickup, all in a semi-hollowbody. Maple veneer over a semi-hollow Mahogany body with cat's eye F-holes has a center block for sustain and reduced feedback. Full-scale maple and walnut neck with ebony fingerboard made in 5 pieces for added strength - with fret-line inlays for the rookie fretless player. Good sounding soapbar pickup gives this elegant bass a unique tone that's especially well suited for an upright tone. List is $624 and these are $399 everywhere but this one's perfect, pro setup, and only $299. It's indeed a sweet bass for the money.

    So, what do you think?

I've already emailed Chris, so if anyone else is taking a shine to it, HANDS OF! My name is down first. Been after a fretless now for a while, and that has just jumped out at me, so I wants it!

It say it's quite upright based, tonally. So for me, I wouldn't go for it, I like the sound of bridge pickup honk but still at that price it looks rather sweet indeed. Go for it.

Indeed, for that price I shouldn't be picky about pickup position, but I've read the reviews on Harmony Central, and they've really been very encouraging altogether. I'd say it would sound like sex even without an amp. That's not saying I won't crank it through the old Trace Elliot that is! :D

Dean seem to be getting some quality gear together indeed and thankfully without the huge headstock

Jaco Pastorius eat your chicken greased heart out.

That bass look amazing, upright tone makes it even more appealing..

    Utter bass madness!

I think the fretless looks lovely and the cut-outs make it look real Jazzy altogether. I'd say go for it, it's an amazing price... Fretless basses rule :p

Ok, it's now officially mine! :D

Holy crackers indeed! Just don't look up some of the Harmony Central reviews, they'll make you feel like kicking my door in and robbing me blind. One fellow on there said he prefers this bass to his custom made Conklin!

    What a ****ing find altogether.

And another one joins Karl's harem...

    Congrats KH!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Thanks very much man! It really is a beauty, isn't it? Normally I don't like burst finishes at all, never mind amber ones, but there's something so elegant about it, especially with that beautiful ebony fingerboard. The style is just such a classical/jazz instrument.

Speaking of my harem though, I'm actually having to move bedrooms to accomidate everything!

I love the shape of the body, don't think i've ever seen a similar one - elegant bitch!

The moving rooms bit is always a pain, isn't it funny how the harem increase is always directly proportionate with property size. :p

I don't think I've ever seen a semi-hollowbody fretless before in my life. I thought the fretless Ric was rare enough as it is, but damned if I didn't fall in love with the Dean on first sight. Another notch on the sig whenever it comes! :)

Indeed, I'm moving the bed out of my current harem, taking over one of the small spare rooms upstairs for sleeping in, so as to have pretty much my own studio room! Possibly with more room for another chair or two and a coffee table, and a mini fridge! That will rock.

Bass looks odd alright but I've come to realise, after spending some time playing a fretless Fender Jazz with flatwounds, that I don't like playing fretless basses. But I do like flatwounds :)

A company called Atrics usually have a cheap 5-string fretless for auction on ebay, usually goes for around €140. I put in a bid for it but didnt get it. Im nowhere near good enough (imo) to begin playing a fretless, and didnt have much of in interest until i heard Individual Thought Patterns, but to get one that cheap just to try it out would be sweeeeet.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

You still have your first cheap bass? Defret :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Ooh yeah, Individual Thought Patterns rocks! What a ****ing album! And that bass solo at the end of The Philosopher?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

Well accursed arsebiscuits of Stalin's spastic colon! The ****er arrived today...

...only to be whisked off in the claws of the post man again because I didn't have the 40 odd eurons extortion to pay. Now I have to find a way to get out to the An Post depot tomorrow and pay for the release of my new baby. Christ, life dangles my new bass infront of me, teases me then twats me on the nose and takes it away, farting in my general direction. Curses, curses a thousand curses.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present you with Karma.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

What did I do!? I was always nice and polite to the Postmen.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

You bought too many guitars in too short a time. It's Karma levelling everything out. You have to wait longer to get your guitars.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Hmm... I guess that's true. Although I hope the Stealth doesn't get held up, because that would just be insanely cruel.

It'd also be rather humourous :D

No, you'd be laughing because you're a petty wanker. They'd be with me in my annoyance, because that's another while they'd have to wait untill they could come and play the baby. ;)

Well, I picked up the baby today! :D

She sounds SWEET as ****. Sweet, I tell you! Other than a small crack in the neck near the headstock, she's prefect.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Other than a small crack in the neck near the headstock, she's prefect.

If you drop it on the head, it will snap.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,896 ✭✭✭fish-head

If I drop Karl on his head, he'll snap and I can steal his pretty bass..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

I try to play all my instruments at least once while I'm sitting on the toilet, that way nobody ever wants them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,592 ✭✭✭Ancient1

I guess the day you drop the bass on it's head, of all other logical places, is the day you can drop yourself on your head!

Congrats dude, she's a beauty! Damn, you must be gassing heavily these days....so many new additions in such a short time. But hey, no one's complaining right? :)

Oh, and the toilet tactic is good...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Sure it's not that many new additions, and it's not that short a time really... I mean, what is it, the Ibanez a couple of months ago, and the Tokai & Dean now? It's not much really when you think about it. Although my sig is getting fairly plump now, eh?

But yes, the toilet tactic is a devious one altogether. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 197 ✭✭kennier

Why do I want a bass all of a sudden?! It's not like I'm any good on the guitar and I never had any interest in basses whatsoever before a few weeks ago...what's wrong with me  I'm trying this mantra 'I have enough guitars, I have enough guitars, I have enough guitars...' but it's not working :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,592 ✭✭✭Ancient1

    Don't worry, kennier, it's just GAS. :D

If it doesn't pass soon it will ruin you financially and you'll never hear the end of it from your wife. But you get used to it.

Best to log off the interweb and go have a cold shower!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

And someday she'll get used to it too and just accept you for who you are.....

Nah, she's just going to make you feel guilty for every string and plec, every replacement tube, every damn cent until you're in the grave way too early :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,592 ✭✭✭Ancient1

    Early grave is right.... :p

Yup, finding the right balance between your GAS affliction and spousal needs/demans is subtle and delicate diplomacy.

    Damn bitches.
