Do you think there should be pictures for all users?

hi i was just wondering how much better you'd get to know a poster if they had a picture like under their avatar or something... it wouldn't be mandatory of course just kinda as a sign of respect to have a pic if its asked for... what do ye think?

It would be nice to have pictures or even customisable avatars, but would increase bandwidth. I'd like it to be mandatory for people's age to be displayed under their avatar, then we'd know what we were dealing with!

A choice of our own avatars, as they do on other discussion forums, would be good. As to photos, well that is down to each individual. It would be nice to be able to put pictures direct into all posts and not just links as in most of the sections here. More freedom to use HTML would be good too. This thread is bordering on going into Feedback.

No need for the sarcasm Wertz, it possible to fake a lot of things on the internet, but most people would be honest I think. Maybe I'm just too trusting of the human race.

To all the other people who agree with the avatars, looks like it has been requested before, but the mods don't want it. I'm banned from Feedback so I can't back anyone up. I don't think it would cost so much for the extra bandwidth, as the increased size shouldn't add up to a whole lot.

Also, Seamus said that they use 3 dedicated servers for boards.ie, which I find hard to understand, since a vBulletin forum like this should be possible with one decent server no problem, considering the traffic.

I don't see what age has to do with the quality of a post...personally I judge on the post and the previous posts from any user.
Having an age displayed might in fact be detrimental; I'd assume those who want it would pay less attention to very young or moderately older posters than themselves, and that ageism would spread to what is a haven from IRL bulls**t...

As for photos...personal preference I suppose. I like the anonymity offered by the net and putting your mug up for all to see on a message board just doesn't do it for me at all.

As for 3 servers in the cluster; you've got to remember that boards is pretty old and has a lot of archive material, plus boards members are allowed to use the servers for web space. There is also a back up server.

Custom avs would be nice...I mean a 60*60 pixel img isn't going to crash the forums or anything...

Is it just me or is one of the advantages of the internet that people DON'T know your age, appearance, sex, etc and therefore don't judge you on these silly things but focus instead on what you have to say and who you are?

I know what you mean, but sometimes, when someone posts something you just know that they maybe too young or immature to know what they are talking about, it's a pet peeve of mine I guess!

Yeah I was thinking also of the old archived stuff, but really what we are talking about is just text, which when compressed (I think the old stuff would be compressed?) would not take up much space. Didn't know boards members could host web pages here, I wonder how much space is assigned to that... I would have thought the whole lot could be run on one, as there isn't a lot of file uploading/downloading, but I guess it depends on how many users are on at once.
