press-ups

    i was wondering....... is it possible to get a decent bod from just doing press-ups?

    it seems like they can give you pretty much the naturally ripped effect.
    if they are any good, how many should i do and how often?

    if they are useless, what is the most effective training method to use to get a decent upper body? since i have dumbells at home, describing a simple exercise for me would be real helpful

    There are many variations of the press up. They can help but on their own are a bit limited despite the variations. A large # of press ups could have negative implications for your wrists and shoulders.

    There was a yokozuna (Chiyonofuji)- whatever the top rank in sumo is who was in super condition for a sumo and he got his build - arms and shoulders from doing 500 press ups a day after a shoulder injury according to the tv presenter. Obviously all the rigorous sumo training did not hurt either!

    In this picture he is about 130kgs or 286lbs at 6ft tall so not too shabby. This guy did not do weights.

    Theres some good advice on there about how you can vary things and try and get things to work in your favour.

    The really nice thing I found about push-up's is that for just 10-15 minutes a day you can get some noticeable improvements, nothing spectacular but for the time needed its good value.

    You could use the dumbells to compliment the push-ups and target unused museles as well.

    Yes you do get a defined body doing press ups, they build your shoulders,arms and chest. I find when you do push ups its alot easier to do dips, pull ups and chin ups etc (bodyweight exercises). Just keep at them, i was like you at the start, barely able to do 20 and now i can do 50-60 in one set. Good luck :)

    Must read up about this guy. If he can get to that size doing pressups alone is say he'd be a monster if he trained properly.

    Press ups are an excellent supplementary exercise and claps, depth, heights, fingers pushups are all excellent variations of an excellent exercise that is as old as man himself.
    But thats all it is - a supplementary exercise.
    Every power athlete in the world's mainstay (including sprinters, powerlifters rugby soccer nfl etc etc) is the bench press, the squat and the deadlift because the incorporate so many different muscles and so many motor units.

    True you can get to a decent level of tone'dness using pushups, situps, bodyweight squats and lunges and plyo's and chin ups but to achieve full potential you must lift the big iron.
