Weekly and sometimes bi-weekly (kinky!) event run in De Burgo's. Showcasing live music in a lovely variety of forms from rock, folk, blues, country, punk, jazz, electronic, experimental, improvised, ecstatic, DJ'ed, more than I want to list and then mixes of all of the above!

Also featured on a recurring basis are Award-Winning International Short Films and other events.

The show runs every week on Wednesdays in De Burgo's at 9pm, e3 before 10pm and e5 after. Keep an eye on the myspace for other events that are coming up besides the regular slot also.

These are all pubs within 20 yards of each other in the Dominick St. Area (aka hippyville, galway).

While they are grand for a few pints and a laugh they're pretty much not where you want to be if you've only one night out in Galway (possible exception being Roisin Dubh).

Luckily for you they are all located on one side of the river (understandible given hippies aversion to water) so they can be avoided quite easily. If you are in Galway for one big night then you'll want to go to the cradle of civilization (Quay St./Cross St.)

CP's/Karma - Mid teens to mid 20's (chart etc.) Kiddys discos if you like being groped and puked on, you'll love this! Wear shoes and put on your shortest miniskirt/tea towelest shirt
GPO/The Vic - Late teens to late 20's (oonce oonce oonce) bangin' choons for the masses, wear whatever you like and bring your best crack pipe.
Cuba/De Burgos - Late teens to late 20's (cuba), early 20's to mid 30's (de burgos) (indie/rock/pop). Cuba is the indie/emo kid heaven, De Burgos is the hipster club. Wear a scowl and your "I deny the b*stard christ" t-shirt and you'll fit right in (cuba), fish out your 1970s vintage adidas and hornrimmed glasses to pass for a local (de burgos).

My personal reccommendation would be a pint or two in Freeneys, follwed by a few in The Front Door and Buskers, then either go to Halo (be in the queue at 11:30) or stay in Buskers for the night, possibly moving down to the living room at about 1:00 if you're bored. This should give you a pretty good generic weekend in Galway night out!

The library is a great resource, handily located right in the city centre on Augustine Street. It has a pretty good selection of books, and you can request volumes from other branches in the county too. If you like browsing in bookshops, Charlie Byrne's is hard to beat.

The Bold Art Gallery and Kenny's are good places to get a fix of culture, totally free. Also the city museum, by the Spanish Arch, is well worth a visit and also free.

Galway is city best explored on foot. Some ideas for places to go: the docks and Long Walk; Claddagh, Nimmo's pier, South Park, Mutton Island causeway; Salthill prom (including the nice little park beside the Galway Bay Hotel); along the river; along the canal, up through NUIG past Corrib Village to Dangan…

I think it's €5 per annum - you have to prove that you are resident in the city, i.e. bring a utility bill or similar - and you can borrow a maximum of four books at a time.

It's not huge, but I have been living here for six years and am a pretty avid reader with broad tastes, and I have never had any trouble finding good books to read - especially since you can order books from other branches in the county if you find them in the online catalogue.

Another great resource in Galway I should mention is the Shantalla Movie House - a fine video library by Cooke's Corner that is definitely worth knowing about if you are into international and arthouse cinema. Many films are shelved by director, and they have a good selection of world cinema, not just Hollywood blockbusters. If you buy credits in advance it works out at something like €2.50 to borrow a film for three days (or new releases for one night only).

Film buffs should also be aware of the Galway Film Society, which screens films in the Town Hall Theatre on Sunday evenings throughout much of the year. Also the Film Fleadh (June) and the Junior Film Fleadh (November) - the latter takes place this very week.

Music for Galway is a music promoter that puts on classical and jazz concerts throughout the year at various venues including St Nicholas's church, Leisureland and NUIG. Sometimes there are even free recitals by the ConTempo string quartet, who are artists in residence at NUIG. Yesterday they gave a lunchtime recital of Haydn and Schubert quartets in Kenny's gallery.

Other free music can be found at the Amnesty International shop on Middle Street at 6pm on Thursdays - generally singer-songwriters.

Anyone who is interested in learning or improving their knowledge of the Irish language should check out Aras na Gael on Dominick Street, which venue is also home to a good alternative club night on Fridays called O2.

You mean the one that closes at sun-set, where an averagely-cautious tourist walks in, looks at all the bushes to hide behind, sees that there's only one gate and that no one in the street outside can see what's going on ... this sets the "risky place" antenna twitching, and I certainly walked out again without getting more than 50 metres into the place. This is truly an appalling example of urban design, with apparently zero consideration of making public spaces safe.

I don't know if it closes at sunset - I've only been there during the day - but there are a lot of places that are safe during the day that you wouldn't (or can't) frequent after dark. However, I am sure there are at least three entrances, two of which have gates and one on the back side that doesn't. I've been there a lot and generally have found the place deserted; certainly I've never felt threatened there.

As for the safety aspect, I agree that it's full of trees and bushes, but it would be pretty sad without any. And it is well hidden from the road, but I think that this is part of the charm of the place. To me it says 'secluded retreat' rather than 'potential mugging site', but I guess it's in the eye of the beholder. (I suppose if your risk antennae are very sensitive then you wouldn't be able to go to a lot of deserted places where you're all alone or can't be seen from a road, but that would include a lot of my favourite haunts.)

Aunteen and Uncleen woods in Merlin park, Renmore is one of our secret little parks that folk don't seem to know about. There's a cool crater there that was made by a WW1 British battle ship during the 1916 rising I think.

Also gymnastics in Renmore, starting back up in late September. You don't have to be any good or anything.
