Reducing a .png file in size?

I'm trying to get a .png file (1600x1200) down in size for a theme I'm currently making, but it seems to be stuck at 3mb. I could convert to .jpg and then back to .png-its unwieldly, but it works, but I'd rather some more direct method. I'm working mostly in the gimp on this, although I have photoshop on my notebook.

Might sound obvious but have you tried reducing the colour depth before saving?

As opposed to just saving as a 256 colour image.
