How much do you drink?

I was just wondering how much the average Irish person drinks. At the moment I'm drinking beer every night, because it really helps me relax and I enjoy it so much. Here's my beer breakdown

    Monday - 2 Cans
    Tuesday - 2 Cans
    Wednesday - 2 Cans
Thursday - 3 Cans (nearer the weekend, I get excited)
Friday/Saturday - One of those nights I usually binge, and the other night I just have maybe 5/6 beers
    Sunday - Few recovery pints

I'm just worried that I might be an alcoholic or something. I mean I'm pretty fit and healthy, but I just really like beer, all kinds. I'm 25. My flatmates are just as bad as me. Are we alone?

Mainly drink at the weekends and have loads. This week from Sunday so far I have had the following.

Sunday - 6 bottles of miller, a bottle of wine and 2 pints
    Monday - 5 pints
Tuesday - 3 pints and a bottle of win
    Wednesday - Nothing
Thursday - Will have a few tonight Id say

    Im 25 too.

I generally just drink on the weekend, but I do like to get gee-eyed on those three magical days, it really depends what I'm drinking. I mean it's after work, so the second pint o' the balck stuff has be fairly gone (I work in a bar) and after there we go to one of the lads gaff's and finish up there, wandering home at 6:00 or so

Only in Ireland, this is OK. Anywhere else, you'd be an alcho:eek::rolleyes:

I had 8 beers last night... too much. Usually have a 6 pack on a Thursday. Couple of beers and a bottle of wine, or half bottle of vodka on Friday. Same again on Saturday, and about 4 Guinness on a Sunday. Try not to drink Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Still.... it's all too much. Hangovers are gettin' worse as I get older too.

I wouldn't drink that much during the week. Maybe a can before I go to bed every now and again, but I would have a joint most nights.

oh man I'm cracking up here, this is brilliant, we're all a bloody drunken disgrace!!! I thought I was alone!! The reason this is an issue with me now, is because I've been going out with a girl from germany for about 6 months, and she thinks I "have a drinking problem". When I really don't, I'm only drunk about once a week, the rest is just for enjoyments sake. I consider myself a connesieur (wrong I know) of beer. Lately I've been drinking cans of Becks, the best canned beer in ireland in my opinion. I took two trips to germany this year and the beer there is just amazing, especially in Bavaria. Try Augustiner Helles if you ever get a chance, but I don't think they export it.

Usually get well plastered at the weekends, and have a few cans during the week as well. Last night I had just the one can, but I might have a few tonight, I mean there's five cans of ice cold beer in my fridge cant just leave them there...

Normally I'd have about four cans a week, other times I'd just do without completely, really depends on the humour Im in, though dunno If I could last a weekend without alcohol though! Only in Ireland eh! :D

Same here. i'd drink the odd bottle the odd night and maybe a few pints at the weekend but spliffs are my real vice. Can't remember the last time I had more than 4-5 drinks in the one night.

You are not alone! I drink most days. It doesn't matter to me what night I drink. I can usually find other people the join me. Sunday is usually the day that I don't drink though. But so far this week i've been drinking Mon Tues and Weds. Tues and Weds I wasn't home till 3 or so after drinking all evening. Friday and Sat I shall be drinking lots as well. Enjoy it while you're young. People say that you'll have problems with your liver but thats nonsense. Liver cysts and cancer are very rare. Its only severe alcos drinking bottles of volka and whiskey that have problems in my experience.

Recently I've been having 1 or 2 bottles in the evening. And I thought that was bad.

I would be the same, 3-4 Monday- Wed. Maybe 5 on Thursday and and 2 or 3 eight packs of Carslberg over the W'end.
    Im 26.

    Monday: 5
    Tuesday: 0

I only really drink at the weekends now but I usually get absolutely plastered and stumble home about 6 in morning. Ill go out the occasional weekday or have a couple of cans playing poker with the lads but i usually wouldnt drink during the week.

I play for a soccer and a gaelic team so i gotta keep myself fit which is hard if your locked all the time. Its hell playing a match on a sun morn after a night on the sauce

Friday: 8-10 pints of Fosters, 2 Jamaican black rum & blacks.
Saturday: 10 pints of lager, 3 tequilas, 2 kamikazes, 3 Sambucas, 2 aftershocks, 2 large bottles of tiger beer.
Sunday: 2 large bottles of bulmers, 6-10 pints Fosters.
    Monday: 6 pints curer.

The other days would just be meths or buckfast down the lane.

That your flatmates are doing it aswell, certainly bodes a little better for you. Is it just a routine that you've fallen into now, or would you all feel a little weird if you weren't having a few beers watching the TV at night? Do you bother drinking if everyone's gone out, and you're on your own?

I'd only drink on a Saturday night or a Friday if there's an occasion. Drinking during the week would upset my sleep, and would render incapable of doing anything bar watching tv that night (my brain switches off from the ability to do functional things once I touch alcohol).

    In the last week:

Thursday - Pints of Guinness in the local, can't remember how many.
Friday - Many pints of bulmers, Some champagne, Bacardi and coke.
Saturday - 2 bulmers, 2 guinness in the afternoon, then 5 bulmers in the evening.
Sunday - Sangria, Margueritas, Cans of bulmers
Monday - few cans of Bavaria Crown (I like the stuff)
Tuesday - 5 pints of Guinness in my local.
Wedensday - 5 pints of Bulmers in Pravda

Usually I wouldn't drink during the week.. I've just had a lot on the past week or so. But I've I've fallen into a trap recently aswell.. I stock up on cans for the weekend for before going out, but I don't get through them all before monday so I tend to have a couple every night, and I usually have a nice joint to help me relax too. If I'm out of beer, I'll probably have some of the Jim Beam I keep stocked up.

    Kevin.

well I have long days, I work, I study a bit, read, and I go to the gym every day, then I come home, cook dinner, so when I sit down at 9pm or whatever I'm usually WRECKED, and a couple of beers is just the best feeling ever, it tastes so good. Yes I do it on my own, I've no problem with that, I even go for pints on my own sometimes.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 489 ✭✭derek27

man i was off the hook with drinking there for a long time. just got it regulated a bit lately. up til about 2 months ago, this was my schedule...

    monday 6+
    tuesday 6+
wednesday borrow money for 5 or 6
    thursday 6+
friday off the scale of 0 to 12
saturday money would be the only limiting factor
    sunday 6+

i'd even find myyself goin out on my own during the week to my local. was missing work and sleeping late in the days and everything, and was becomming immune to the effects of the alcohol. so i changed my ways before it was too late. now...

    mon 0
    tue 0
    wed 0
    thurs 3-4
    fri 3-4
    sat ~8
    sun 3-4

i enjoy it more now, and have more money, and got back to working my regular hours. funny thing is, i'm studying toxicology and i'm hugely aware of the magnitude of the pathological damage alcohol can have if taken in excess, but i realised that i wasn't drinking solely for the alcohol, rather it was just to be out of the house and socialising. so it was easy for me to cut my intake. we irish certainly drink an awful lot more than most.

actually people who don't drink please don't post here. And I know I didn't say that in the original post but I'm saying it now. To be honest with you all, I never trusted people who don't drink, unless they're recovering alcoholics, only then can I understand why you wouldn't drink.

My granduncle drank, at the very minimum, a 750ml bottle of whiskey *every* day of his life and he died a happy man in bed.

Mind you he was thirteen years of age!!

We don't drink because we are more intelligent than the majority and realise that alcohol is a drug that has a sedative effect.
I understand we non drinkers intimidate you because we are strong enough to resist taking the easy paths in life.
You are just pissing your pants with fear.

    NONSENSE.

There isn't one good reason to drink alcohol.

If you like to use it o relax then you should get help.

Don't be so presumptuous and get off your high horse. Not drinking doesn't make you any stronger than anybody. Perhaps you don't drink because you are boring, or cant handle it, are too mean to spend money, or don't like socialising. There are many reasons a non-drinker can be 'weaker' than a drinker in many aspects.

"More intelligent"... always gives me the chuckles!

Those people who cant remember a thing have simply drank too much.
Its called a blackout, and can be annoying/scary.
It is possible to get very drunk, and still remember everything, although sometimes you must be reminded of certain events to jog your memory.

As for drinking, on avg over here in Spain Im about on about 2 cans a night,
and when I go out probably 6 pints(They dont drink as much over here).

Man i hate that, been happening to me a lot lately. About 3 weeks ago, I pretty much erased half the night from my memory - couldnt remember a thing: the drunken shambling around in the club, the walk home, falling flat on my face, trying to pet the swans by the canal, the HUGE feed in the takeaway - nothing. And as for the hangover..........

i dont normally drink during the week, due to my job and having to get up early, i mostly drink on fridays and saturdays id normally go through about 6-7 pints of bulmers (for the summer) and about 4 JD and coke and maybe 2 red bulls and vodka, it can change due to money etc.
