Steam Room and Sauna use recommendation

    Hi guys,

    How long should you spend in these for it to be beneficial but not harmful? Also, what is the difference between the two if any? Thanks

    as far as i no they make you sweat alot more so are good for losingweight(but you cant stay in them for to long i dont think so kinda only lose very little weight) also iv been told they are good for your breating as all the hot air helps unblock your nose and clean out your windpipe from gunk etc...(or so iv been told iv no proof to back this one up only hearsay)

    I don't think you ever lose fat from being in a steamroom, only water. They're supposed to be good for your skin, clearing out pores and stuff. Other than that, they're just nice and relaxing. I can't spend longer than about 2 mins in them though, as I'm dehydrated enough after exercise and the saunas/steam rooms only dehydrate me to the point where I get a pretty bad headache. If I do go in, I have to have a bottle of water with me.

    Now, people can feel free to correct me here, but just because you're sweating, doesn't mean that you're losing weight. As far as I can tell, Saunas would have little if any effect on your ability to lose weight. Being very cold for a prolonged period of time would in fact have better weightloss attributes than a sauna. Sweating is a passive method of temperature control, whereas shivering is an active, and therefore energy-burning method of temp control.

    It would however, be quite effective after a night on the beer (just keep your fluid levels topped up), and also for those with spots etc, to clear out their pores. If you've ever gone to the gym after a break or a heavy weekend, you might notice that your sweat may be a little smellier and stronger. This quite simply is waste. The more you sweat, the more waste you've excreted.

    i said lose weight not fat! the sweating makes you lose water! or if as said before you were on the piss the night before and are retaining alot of water it would work to help lose some of the water retention

    Whats the recommended time to stay in one?

    I normally try ti aim for 20 to 25 minutes in one, this is after a swimming between 1 and 1.5 km's in the pool. Generally I'd bring a bottle of water in with me.

    Only prob I has is $pa's who put water on the rocks by wringing out their swimming hats, which are full of chlorine.

    yeh i suppose it isnt very nice for everyone else.... but stillit does work!

    The only weight loss is water, thats why boxers/jockeys go into them to lose a pound or two, do their weigh in/race and then have a bit of water to rehydrate, thats why on hot days jockeys get stood down due to dehydration.
