Got an unsolicited email from bangcd.com this morning - don't know who they are but they seem to offering good value. Have a feeling that they might be linked to cdwow. Has anybody here had any dealings with these guys?

Any 'company' that resorts to unsolicited spamming is dubious IMHO.

    It is what it's.

I queried where they got my email address from - here's the thread:

Can you tell me where you got my email address please? I just received an email with the subject "CD & DVD Price EXPLOSION @ www.BangCd.com" but I have never heard of your company before. I must insist on finding out who provided you with my mail address as I wish to opt out of any commercial list that I may be on. Regards, Steve

    Hi
    Thank you for your email.

BangCd is a newly setup Singapore based company.

We are in contact with the Company from whom we bought the database as we purchased it in all good faith on the understanding that all customers had opted-in to receive information about music and CDs.

We are very sorry for the inconvenience caused and in the meantime if you wish to be unsubscribed from this database, please do let us know.

    Hi,

Can you tell me the name of the company that you bought it from? I can
categorically state that I did not opt-in to anything that allowed
anybody to sell on my email address. I always make sure to tick that
box - and if that box isn't there then I don't sign up at all.

Please remove me from your list. I'll keep an eye on the site anyway
and purchase if the prices are right but I get enough emails without
having to trawl through advertising as well.

    Thank you for your email.

As far as the company who sold us the database is concerned, I myself am not aware of the company name but I shall make your comments known to our director so that he can inform us in due course.

We apologise for any upset it has caused.

That last mail was 5 days ago - haven't heard anything since

The email format does look similiar to CDWOW 's and i did use that address with them but i have a second address in the CDWOW database that didn't get spammed. One other music related site i can think of where i used that particular email address was www.hotpress.com. Anyone else in the same boat?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 496 ✭✭hansov

I subscribe to play.com and cdwow; and somebody else I have been in contact with is with 7dayshop.com, play.com, and cdwow. So back to the old association rules in secondary schhol maths, with your info, points the finger at cdwow. Bangcd also claim to use worldpay which cdwow also uses. Great prices but I still don't know if I will risk my credit card details. :(

    I received that email too.
I have a feeling that they may have either bought the customer database from splashdvd.com, or some of their staff previously worked for splashdvd and brought the customer list with them, or the same people set up the business. Splashdvd sold DVDs, CDs and books and went into liquidation March 2004.

The email address to which the mail was sent, I only really use for purchasing stuff, from play.com, amazon.com and cdwow (and splashdvd.com when they were in business). I think it's unlikely that any of the first 3 would sell a customer database to a competitor.
Plus, the names "splashdvd.com" and "bangcd.com" sound to me like they could have been thought up by the same guy.

Were any of you guys a splashdvd customer?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,807 ✭✭✭✭Orion

I've never bought anything from splashdvd. It's looking like cdwow or play.com are the culprits.

i got this email on an address, just used for web buying and such, that never gets spam. I've never used splashdvd, so it's most probably cdwow, the langers

    same here.
since I signed up with play and cdwow, i've been using www.spamgourmet.com.
This allows me to generate a vendor-specific email address on the fly which will bounce into my mailbox.
e.g. i can create a email address which I only use for cdwow.com. If I get email from any other site, I can block this whole email address. Similarly I can add cdwow to a trusted senders list, so that only cdwow-originating emails will go there. it's cool, and free. Will never again have to fill in my "real" email address. And whenever I change my "real" email address I only have to change it in one place and I keep getting my emails from all over the place.
Try it. dead handy for the signups for websites and so on,

I got this same email yesterday (straight to trash.. didnt even open it :D )

I only use Play and (rarely) CD WOW so definitely has to be one of them - and I always check the "dont spam me" box too!

I've had emails going backwards and forwards between me and BangCD as I am insisting that they tell me who provided my email address to them. They have already admitted purchasing a database but
    BangCD wrote:
We are truly sorry that we cannot disclose the name of the company as we have signed a confidential agreement with them and what we really can do is to advise the company to delete your database

I've just replied that any confidentiality agreement is bull$hit as they have sold my email address without my permission. My mails have steadily moved from friendly requests to (now) demands for this information. I'll keep hassling them and let you know when they admit the culprits.

Unfortunately, this domain is registered through Network Solutions, the worst registrar (as far as WHOIS is concerned).
They do not support WHOIS lookups from ad-free sites like ours (because of the volume of hits from us), and try to force
users of our site to use their ad-laden site.

If you don't like this policy, please send an E-mail to whoisquery@networksolutions.com
or call 1-888-642-9675 and let them know it you don't like it! Alternatively, you
can file a complaint with Internic.

If this is your domain, please consider using a more reasonable registrar.

    lol @ whois
    domains by spammers, for spammers.

    good luck to them

    Stupid Vendor Tricks http://www.realworldtech.com/page.cfm?ArticleID=RWT102697000000

it's an old list so you can probably add in selling customer data to the list. Gives an indication of what a new startup might possibly be doing and why it's better to pay a small premium for a track record.

SPAM - spam isn't ethical and depending on which countries laws apply probably isn't legal either. Anyone who buys from these guys is subsidising SPAM. So IMHO even if the CD's are legit and arrive as promised I'd still consider them to be dodgy.

Well the email address that I use for cdwow and play has not received same but my spam email did receive so I am not convinced that it is cdwow or play. There is no doubt it is modelled on cdwow. The question is has any used them ?

General Consensus on the net is that CDwow or in some way connected with bangcd - either they are part owners or they have sold their email list.

Other forums I visit namely dvdforums.co.uk have been talking about this all week aswell.

That looks like a nifty service. I like the ability to restrict the number of emails forwaded on.

GMail can do something similar. If your gmail username is user all email sent to user+blah@gmail.com, user+spamzors@gmail.com, user+$WHATEVER@gmail.com will all get sent to user@gmail.com. So if you told cdwow your email address was user+cdwow@gmail.com, and you started gettnig spam with the 'To:' field being user+cdwow@gmail.com, then you'd know. You could then create a filter to automatically delete it.

I use Worldpay quite regularly- and have not gotten one of these e-mails. Worldpay are considered to be a reputable firm- so regardless of them being a common link in these two companies, I do not think they are at fault here......

Had this email today send to 2 of my email address which are attached to 2 member registered CDWOW accounts plus the fact the site is from HK would also lead me to believe that the following site has somehow got my email address from CDWOW . Off to Complain Now .

Lads can you confirm whether you have a CDWOW membership and if so was that the email address spammed . Because their the only ones being spammed as I use a lot of email address to get away with the vouchers etc . Plus make sure that your commuication settings say do not pass my details to a partners etc .

Can someone who has purchased from Bang CD forward the number on the top of the postage parcel saying pre paid postage paid - There should be an account number on the parcels received through the letter box .

response from CDWOW as always very fast :

    Hi

    Thank you for your email.

As far as we know, BangCD are a legitimate company and they are in no way
    affiliated with CD Wow.

We have not distributed any emails to them as they would be in direct
    competition with us.

We are not sure how they would have received any email addresses used solely
for CD Wow, but this may be down to other affiliates or companies
    distributing email addresses.

If you have ever used another company's discounted link to access the site,
they may have sold your details.

Apologies for any inconvenience caused and please do not hesitate to contact
me again with any further questions you may have.

    Regards

Okay I ordered three CDs August 10, they were shipped August 11 and 12 and two of them were in my letterbox yesterday evening when I got home. I was sceptical when I first posted this thread - now I just don't know :D . Hopefully the third will be there this evening. If so that's a pretty good service.
