I joined a gym a couple of wks ago.
But I don't want to give up any food I like.
Fortunately, I don't like any ice creams and chocolates.
Can I lose around 30 kgs with exercise in the gym for 1 yr?
I don't know how to do with my food.
Is there anyone to give a good advise for me, thanks.

Hi frany... you've made the right first steps - setting a goal, joining a gym, and asking for advice here!

The first piece of advice I can give you is to adjust your goal. 30kg in a year is very noble, but its too far in the distance and you'd have to have colossal determination to stick with it. Instead, set some milestones on the way to your overall goal. For example, for the first month aim to lose (for example) 8lb (about 3.5kg).

The second piece of advice is to report back here with progress (good or bad). There is no shortage of people here to pat you on the back if you're doing well, or to encourage you back on the wagon if you fall off. Nobodys perfect, and there'll be times when you want to give up and go on a binge. Come here and rant about how you're feeling before you do anything bad about it! :)

Third piece of advice.... don't suddenly go on a crash diet and cut out all the food you like (but is bad for you). It won't work. You might last a week or two, then you'll crash and burn and go on a food bender. Cut out the crap food from your diet piece by piece. If you usually have a fryup for breakfast 7 days a week, change it to every second day and have cereal/toast every other day. If you usually have fish and chips or pizza every night, change it so you have pasta or chicken or something healthy every second night.

You're looking for advice on food.... What is your current diet like?

No. Its highly unlikely that you will lose more than a small amount of weight through exercise alone, unless you are exercising for 60-90 minutes 7 days a week and keep it up. and it would take you a couple of years to lose even half of that extra weight.

You don't really need to give up the food you like though - just reduce your portion sizes and that would be a good start.

Just out of interest exactly what food is it that you are so intent on not giving up? Remember that its only food at the end of the day.

i dont want to sound like a b***h but if ur in a position where you need to lose weight (& im far from a model myself) then theres obviously something wrong with what your eating at the moment and you probably need to cut out or change something in ur diet.
alternatively, smaller portions of food. but it can be hard to judge

look you can lose weight slowly with exercise but thats only assuming you arent eating to much so you can lose weight at all! but to be serious about losing that much without even a diet you cant not diet!! at least iv nvr heard of it ever happening! if you give us ur current diet mabey we can help you change things like at brown bread instead of white etc...things like dat! those changes can make a huge difference to your weight but wont make much difference to your eating habits!

Also make changes in your diet such as Milk. If you drink full fat milk try and go for skimmed milk, it has higher protein and calcium than full fat or low fat milk ( but doesn't taste as nice :) ). As others have said Reduce portion size and really do as much exercise as you feel you can handle - lots of cardio and do some weight exercises also ( lat pull down, chest press, pec fly etc ). It would be interesting to find out your current height and weight. Just remember don't over do it and many people who start going to gyms can get obsessed with losing weight or gaining muscle as i myself become obsessed and really pushed myself at the gym, in the end i lost 2 stone in 6 months but i felt and looked tired,my complexion was pale and you could also see my skull bones clearly on my face as i lost so much weight.

In the end it wasnt worth it to be honest and now im safely putting the weight back on and doing weight lifting, iv now put back on a stone and a 1/2 but most of it is muscle but with this weight on me at the moment i look alot healthier. so really my only advice is, take it in your stride and don't try to lose to much weight to quickly like i did because you will end up looking unhealthier and being exhausted almost everyday even when your not at the gym.

Ok I'll answer about your questions.
    I'm 4ft8inches and 73kgs(almost 160lbs).
    I think 45kgs(about 100lbs) is my correct weight.(height - 100)x 0.9

As for my food, I usually have rice with fishes and vegetables but I eat a lot.
My stomach is big at the moment,
if I cut down any food, then I wouldn't be content with small food.
I'm from S.Korea, rice is a main dish to Koreans as potatoes are a main food to Irishes.
So I enjoy rice and vegetable with fishes a lot.
My problem is just amount of food, not from any food.
Because I don't drink milk a lot and don't enjoy any coke.
But I enjoy alcohol with food.(This is Koreans' custom. Koreans enjoy alcohol with meal)
So if my Irish mother in law cooks Irish dinner(pork chops or beef steak or lasagna?),
I really want to drink alcohol. That's my bad problem.
So I'm going to stop drinking.
Because cutting alcohol down is harder than stopping it to me.
And I love to eat eggs. But recently, I eat one egg just once in a week.
I had white bread last year but changed it to brown one.
    Now I eat butter(actually, I love butter :D ) just a little in a week.
I loved to eat butter popcorns but don't eat it at the moment.

I just want to go back to my normal weight.
I just was only 42kgs when I was in college.
I delivered 2 sons in 1997 and 1998 in Korea and gained this weight. :o

Thanks very much for giving me a lot of advices for me.
And I will post my exercise story here what I will be going on. :D
And please help me when I have any problem, thanks.

I've never exercised in any gym before so I want to know how long I can exercise in a gym.
And I don't know which one is better for me in between exercising hard with my all energy in a short time and exercising weak but for a long time around an hour or more.
I don't know that I better run or walk on the running machine.
If you don't mind it, pls help me how to do with the machines.
My trainer recommended only a bike,
step machine(i'm not sure with this name) and running machine.

I'm very happy to join here. Irish is very kind.

seriously dont use your heritage as an xcuse as its a patethic 1! thats like saying we ar irish w must go to the pub at the weekend or something like that!
and drinking with food can be terrible weight wise! as it keps your metabilism busy trying to get rid of it instead of your food(i think) so your food or most of it anyway just lies there and more of it goes to fat then normal!
im sory if im coming off as a bit of a d1ck but generalisations annoy me!(i realise i may do them myself at times)lasagne and rice etc are full of carbohydrates...to help you burn them off you should mabey go for a walk after or try eat earlier in the day so you will have more time for your metabilism to work before you sleep!

    Welcome to the forum!

Sounds like you do need a bit of work there.

Definitely cut out or reduce the alcohol - it will pile on the weight if you are short. (I am 5 foot exactly myself).
Butter is a killer - huge levels of fat. I found that it was easy to eliminate butter by not eating anything usually associated with butter.
Rice is not all bad - you should change to basmati or whole grain brown rice and keep the portions small. (I actually sometimes eat quinoa grain or millet grains instead of rice - same cooking method, but more nutritious).
If you eat fish or meat, reduce the portion sizes and avoid sauces or breadcrumbs/batters. I find fish excellent - especially crab meat, tuna steak, sole and scallops.
Eggs are actually good - in moderation. You could eat an egg instead of a cereal some mornings? Lower in fat/calories and more filling.
Most Asian women do eat more rice but generally its found that those who move from rural areas and a more traditional active lifestyle tends to put on weight when they move to cities and urban lifestyles. Rice is not bad, but keep the portions small.

At your height your ideal calorie intake is probably only around 1500 calories.
If you reduce calorie intake by 200 calories and spend only 20 minutes in the gym (about 100 calories burned) that 300 calories less a day, you'll lose a pound in fat every 11 days or 22 pounds a year. That would still require 3 years to shed the lot. However if you reduce the calories more and double the exercise you should be able to lose a lot more.

I'd guess from the amount you wish to lose and the kind of foods you like that a guided programme would be useful. A high protein diet perhaps? Get referred to a clinical dietician, go to one of the Motivation Clinics (www.mla.ca), or else try www.ediets.ie
They are the best options if you have a lot of weight to lose and need to customise around your preferences. (As anybody who knows me will confirm, I am not a fan of WeightWatchers - quite simply because everybody I know who has gone ends up putting the weight back on again - and again).

I myself have lost 38 pounds in 18 weeks due to a high protein diet on around 1400 calories a day, and 30-60 minutes exercise almost every day, the core of which is lifting weights. I still have about 29 pounds to lose and am losing a steady 2 pounds a week. It sure is possible, but the main thing you need to get a grip with is that food is not the most important thing in life and you need to change your habits permanently in order to control your weight.

    Sorry for replying so late.
I was falling in love with watching Korean DVDs like
OLD BOY and other stuff as well.. haha.. :p

These days, I go to a zym every other day and
exercise for almost 50mins and spent around 300calories.
My hubby joined the gym lately as a family ticket,
so we go to a gym 3 or 4 times in a week.

And I started to cook rice with brown rice, millet grain, glutinous millet,
glutinous rice, barley, hulled millet and beans or peas.
Yes Koreans like whole grain with some rice as well.
We have the special day that eat rice with lots of grain in Feb
    (it's called Hanshik in Korean).
Most of Korean foods are very good for your health with a lot of sea food and vegetables
but it takes long time to cook Korean food.
So I've cooked only easy food like noodles with being lazy. haha.. lazy Mary??

I cut drinking down to once in a week or once in 2 weeks.
And I reduced the amount of alcohol as well.
I checked my body weight this morning.
Finally, I gained weight on the scale but feel slim a little.
My Korean friend said that my fat started to turn into muscle
and that's why I gained weight a little more but it's good for me.
So I'm in happy mood at the moment. :p

I'm going to post what I'm going on with my body and exercise here like a diet diary.
So if I'm going to do something wrong, then pls help me how to do.
I really appreciate you all gave me good advices.
And I'm also happy with feeling like a cyber family with you all here.

By the way, Is it good for losing weight to play in the pool?
