hey all, just wondering about barbells in your gyms. I know the standard olympic bar weigh 44lbs but how you can tell it is in fact a standard olypmic bar. as in could it have the same length, shape etc, but be made of different compounds and thus weigh less/more?

The reason i'm asking is that in my gym some barbells may be slightly longer than others but also slightly thinner, should i just assume that any olypmic looking bar weighs 44lbs?

i'm not that bothered about it but it's just for accuracy in my records

In general Olympic bars are 7ft long with the wider extremeties for plates. Just note that American "Olympic" bars are 45lbs because of the imperial weights. The narrower ones on racks that are about 5-6ft with narrow extremeties are normally 5kg, ez curl 8.4kg etc... if in doubt throw it on a weighing scales...

seriously?? to be more specific, the bars i'm talking about have as you said wider sleeves than the middle of the bar, look about 7ft long (slight variations in length [7-8inches] and thickness [in the middle part] ) i'm fairly sure they are the correct weight it's just if i lift the bar on it's own even for warm up arm curls, it feels like it's less than 20kgs

Standard bars are 1 inch in diameter and olympic bars are 2 inches in diameter? Or is that just the end for the plates?
