Ireland win with 1 ball to spare

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,691 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

I do believe that after the results today Ireland are pretty much there. If not already thru.

    Group
    Ireland - 6 pts
    Bermuda - 4pts
    Denmark - 4pts
    UAE - 2 pts
    Uganda - 2pts
    USA - 0pts

USA have been very disappointing. All the internal turmoil must be affecting them. We play them tomorrow and finish off the group with Denmark on Wednesday.

Yep, looking good... still the fingers are crossed....

Looks like Holland and Scotland are nailed on for Group B.

Ireland V USA - match abandonded

What worries me about this Ireland side is they seem to have a very brittle top order. We seem to always need a 4th or 5th wicket stand of 125 runs or something like that. Fine when they stand for it but if Joyce and co get out cheaply they'll probably lose.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,807 ✭✭✭✭Orion

The top order is far from brittle although it looks like it from the score cards. Ed is the type of batsman who can play an openers role if they go early or just go whacking if the overs are running out and there's wickets to spare. I wouldn't worry too much.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,691 ✭✭✭✭KevIRL

Ireland can lose by up to 90 runs to Denmark tomorrow and still will still qualify

i like your positive thinking there, kev!!!! :D

I agree. I am surprised to see Jason Molins is playing in the latest match against Denmark. I know he's the captain, but I think he should have dropped himself at this stage.

So far his scores in the competition have been 3, 19, 4 and 2 (today's score). In the two warm-up matches he go 0 and 0. His average in the tournament proper is 7. If you include the warm-up matches his average is 4.7.

Not good enough and a sign of someone who hasn't been playing enough cricket, or certainly not at a high enough level.

Go on - drop yourself and give someone else a chance.

Naseer Shoukat got 20 n.o. against Namibia when batting at about no. 9. The following day he got 41 against Scotland when batting as an opener. So he seems to be in some form yet he hasn't featured in the competition at all!! He may not have bowled brilliantly in the two warm-up matches, but he seems to be in form with the bat.

Now I don't know enough about to know if he is the answer, but he could hardly be worse than the captain.

Ireland could be in some trouble today, now that Ed Joyce has only got about 60.

    Ireland 222 all out

Bermuda hit 311-8 off their 50 ovs V USA.

Gettign very nervous about it all now!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,807 ✭✭✭✭Orion

222 (all out) 49.4 overs - far from the best score of the competition but they should be able to defend it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,958 ✭✭✭✭RuggieBear

by how many wickets can we afford to be beaten? sorry
feeling a bit nervous and going for the worst case scenario to calm me beating heart..... :o

Denmark 131-5 (35ovs) B Singh the opener seems to be the key wicket on 57 not out.

    Bermuda 311-8 (50ovs)
    USA 197-9 (35.4ovs)

Not sure if that will improve Bermuda's NRR to pass Ireland.

    Denmark 146-8 (37ovs)

Looks like we are home and dry! Windies 2007 here we come! :D

Have to agree with the earlier comments about our top order. I went to the matches v Uganda and Denmark (7 hour round trip each day, but well worth it) and if it wasn't for stout batting from the middle we would have been in big trouble on both days.

Molins, Bray and Botha looks a strong 123 on paper, but Jason seems to be unable to buy a run at the moment. I am a bit worried about tommorrow's match against Canada, as Ed Joyce is back in Middlesex. Hopefully Eoin Morgan will be back, and it is essential that Trent Johnson gets some runs as well. Dom Joyce batted beautifully yesterday, and was the worthy recipient of the MOM award. I am very impressed with our bowling options, TJ, Paul Mooney and Scooby McCoubrey bowled with real venom. Kyle McCallan was a star particularly yesterday with his spin (10-4-23-1) and Andy White picked up 3 for 17 bowling at the end. Fielding was ok too.

No, it's the top order which is of concern, and to the Irish management as well. Adi Birrell was very unhappy during his trips around the boundary, and Matt Dwyer wasn't best pleased either. I didn't realise Shaukat was an opener, that might be a good option tommorrow.

Having said all that, isn't it a positive sign of our standing in world cricket, when we are winning without playing particularly well.

Anyone going to Clontarf for the semi?

    Nick

By the way, Hello everyone! :)

I'm going to try and make it - pity Ed isn't playing but with a bit of luck Jason will do his part.

They will play Scotland in the Final on Wednesday who won by 6 wickets today.

    Bermuda 219-9 from 50
    Scotland 222-4 from 46.5

I was there yesterday, great game, good tense finish. We were sweating it with about 10 overs to go, we were still needing more than 7 an over, and the loss of Johnston at 171/6 didnt help. But Gillespie played really well, hitting the bad ball when it needed to be hit, running quick singles to keep things in check with White. When the 48th over went for 14, we knew we were on the pigs back.

Roll on the Scots. :) Midweek.... I really dunno if I can make it.. :(

Holland took the final qualifying spot today with a 145 run victory over the UAE

    Ireland 40-2 [12 overs]
