    Get a job hippy!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 115 ✭✭disillusioned

You could probably earn some money by working. Try mowing the lawns of some neighbours or walking dogs for people or babysitting or else go out and get a job - there are loads of 'em about these days.

No there are not!! I handed out about 30-35 cvs in the last week alone and not one interview. Not to mention all the ones ive handed out since May. ITs getting harder to get a job if anything.

Getting a job can be tough but it depends where you apply, there's generally no shortage of work for under-18's stacking shelves for 6 euro an hour. Maybe a bit late now but I might be wrong.

"skint" is a word that I'm no familiar with these days but I'm sure your summer can be co-ordinated with your friends.

First of all grim is wrong. If you don't have a connection or the luck of a thousand royal flushes you are NOT going to get a job at this late stage in the summer. A naggan(never spelled it only drank it) is only €8.50 for Jack Daniels. Fields are free. Friends are free. What more do you want

rob some johnies of your da/brother/sister and shag the summer away.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,487 ✭✭✭Kevin_rc_ie

on a slightly unrelated note, the national history museum and similar will only cost you the price of bus fare into town.
go to phoneix park and go bird watching.
go swimming at the beach (be careful).
    race snails.

With people going on holidays around this time I've heard of more than one occasion where the staff turnover has left vacancies, especially stacking shelves.

Did you make follow-up calls to the people you handed your cv to?
Did you actually get the name of the person who took your cv or the HR boss so that you could ring them directly and make an impression?
Did you build your cv to suit the positions you were applying for?

Best suggestion on d page!!Will drink d summer away!!dosnt matter if ya hav a **** summer cos ya wont remember any of it!!

You don't need to get drunk the whole summer. There are a few thngs that are free that you might get some fun out of. If you like music you can go to the library (Ilac centre) and check out what they have. THe selection can be a bit strange but you might get some new music interests. go to www.allmusic.com look up your favorite artists and see who their influences are and see if the library has them. The libraries also do graphic novels and you mind find you like them or even regular books.
Have you any interests even ones that cost money?

Most things I can think of are a bit teachery but it depends on what you like

Emmm... take a bike ride along the coast (say up Clontarf Rd, there's a good track there along the seafront, and then across the wooden bridge to Dollymount Strand)... on a sunny day head down to Wicklow on the bus and climb the Sugarloaf (I'm sure you can find info somewhere on the net if you google it, and it's an easy climb)... get a Dublin bus rambler ticket and head somewhere you've never been before... try the museums and art galleries cos they rock! Hmmm, dunno what else. Seriously, I know some of those suggestions might not sound very cool and yr friends might go "uhhhh..." but, hey, if you're bored, it is honestly fun to do that kinda thing. I've worked every summer since I was 12 so I've never really had your problem.

You're in dublin, why not just rob a car?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,799 ✭✭✭Tha Gopher

Because my mate is out of work due to a broken arm and I cant ask for full time work yet due to the fact I have to take off work for 3 occasions in July (and repeat 3 exams in August), on my off days he arrives at my gaff, we flick through the tv for an hour, decide theres nothin on, then go buy a 6 euro flagon each and walk around lookin for trouble and birds

Best way to spend a hot summers day tbh

I think he's looking for more than casual work. Maybe not a 9-5 but something more dependable than 2 weeks because someone's on holiday. And GENERALLY would be a word implying the majority of the time. Like i said unless he knows someone who can get him a job covering holidays then he ain't going to be working. Its not a case of walking into Dunnes, "any jobs?" "Okay here you go"

Go check out the Temple Bar events office. Yesterday evening was bored, so just walked in for a look. Got free tickets for a play in the Abbey Theatre, which was brill. Also found out that tonight, Saturday the 2nd of July, at 22:00, there is a free showing of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" in Meeting House Square. The fella said to get there at 21:30 to ensure a seat.

Gods honest truth there is nothing for you to do.
Even if you were to drink the summer away, you'll need money, for which you'll need a job.

A job will keep you busy and give you money to do things when you're not working.

Also, it is damn hard to find a job here.
    The 'job-boom' is well over.

I know how you feel. There's feck all to do in Dublin and that's probably why most teenagers turn to drink as it's the only way to have fun. Last summer was the worst summer I had and I have a feeling it's starting to repeat itself this year, which sucks!! Also the lack of motivation in my friends doesn't help when I want to do something different......I need to find new friends :)

I guess the fact he hasn't been back to comment says it all. Low attention span makes most things seem boring.

Sweetness> There loads to do you just need to have an interest in something. What do you want here that isn't here? Give us a hint.

I know wat its like! After a borin summer last year i handed out lots of cvs b4 the summer began still no job!Im so bored now theres nothin to do and ive no moneyevn 4 drink!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,688 ✭✭✭grimloch

Well your boredom will serve as an incentive to get a job sorted early next year so you'll have lots of money for drink.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 335 ✭✭katiegordon

My boredom LAST year was an incentive to try get a job sorted early this year but i didnt get one!!!

Well the third time is the charm as they say. Am I right in believing you'll be over 16 next year? That could help too.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 67 ✭✭melancholymaidn

its real easy for people who actually have jobs to say its easy to get one! i tried since march this year and last year with good cv and follow up calls...got one interview with dunnes an still no job! its a hell of a lot harder than a lot of people think!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
as for stuff to do over the summer anybody have any interesting suggestions other than museums (been to every free one so much that i know the places like the back of my hand-good as they are they do get boring eventually) and drinking (not so keen on getting my stomach pumped!)
friends are great but things would be a lot more fun if you actually had something to do in their company. the interests i have dont have anything on over the summer and i cant afford much!

As was mentioned before, the beach is free. A thing that used to be popular back in my day was going to the gaeltacht for a week or two.

I recall being bored enough to whip out the old snes and complete all 96 levels od Super Mario World in as little time as possible, preferably one sitting, although I have yet to near this feat.

Anyway, heading up to Leisureplex and going to the cinema can be good fun at times except that requires money, hate the way the stingy buggers make you pay a euro just to get in, camping is free.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,316 ✭✭✭✭the_syco

    i cant afford much!
Work in MacDonalds. Its not bad, great if its your first job, free lunch, and the hours would be flexiable. And if your mates think working in MacDee's is sad, you'll be the one able to go to the cinema, etc.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 433 ✭✭me and the biz

haha dont know if a free lunch would be much of an incentive to work there. nixers.com is pretty good for jobs

I have to do things like work and pay my mortgage. :( That's when you figure out the stress you feel now never goes away you just get different priorities.

So what do you like or want to do? Give us some idea and maybe we could figure it out. Some suggestions have been made what did you think of them?

I'd suggest you study English by your post ;)

well I've been lokking for a job all summer aswell, since May I've been handing in CV's and ringing around companies. The majority of places are looking for experince, how are ya meant to have experince if ya cant get a job! agh!! and nixers.ie is crap for getting a job, demand exceeds supply there, as in thousands of people apply for jobs there everyday! basically its down to sheer luck if you get a job or not!
and the ideal way to entertain yourself during thr summer is to get a few drinks, head into a town and get the bus/train to somewhere you havnt been before. My friends and I started doing that in the summer of 4th year, still do it to this day! great fun and always meet new friends on your crazy adventures!! for more info check it out at www.mmbtt.tk!
