can it be set so just one person can use a Avatar.
now when i start looking at who posted stuff i see peoples Avatars first and think it's someone with the same Avatars till i see the name is diff. is there a way that just one person could use a Avatar and that would be there Avatar till they changed it.

the other thing is the size of the space to enter txt, is't far too small, and it's very hard to know what your post is going to look like when your done. there is loads of space to the right hand side of the box could it be made bigger ?

I tried that before on my boards ... pain in the ass ... somebody could just start multi acc and whore avatars ... or what not...

t'would be easier if you learn to read the names instead :-)

as for the textbox ... just means adjusting the column width in the perl script

On the text box item- the width of the post/reply textarea box seems to be optimised for 640x480. About 75px width could be added to it before it would be too big for that res.

You would need to be pretty sad to whore avatars ffs!
And, who in their right mind still browses in 640x480?!?

Dunno who... I've got my screen res set to about twice that, at 1280x1024, but I still zoom in on the boards.ie pages using Opera's handy zoom function... not quite as far as the equivalent of 640x480 - 800x600 equiv. perhaps.

Whatever about 'who still uses 640x480 fer fekks sake, mon!', a well designed web site should look well and fit adequately in *any* resolution.

In contrast, yes, as a web designer by trade, I *do* think that 640x480 is usually too low a res. to be designing for. However, I think the textarea in question here is plenty wide enough for it's purposes... maybe make it longer, height-wise...

that avatar thingy is a good idea. i generally associate certain avatars to a user (e.g. bard and hobbes)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,333 ✭✭✭Celt

THey dont need to change anything, with the avatar hack, just rename the avatar as <usernumber>.gif.jpg etc. and that will only be available to that person.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,237 ✭✭✭Coyote

come on guys it would be much better if
    Avatars were person by person
go on install that hack for it smile.gif

As you can see from my avatar, it IS possible to have a custom avatar for a particular user.

But, I am not going to start renaming avatars for each user, it's just too time consuming. Maybe one of the other admins will feel differently, I doubt it. We may consider custom avatars for those in the No Life category.

There would be a hack to allow people to specify avatars from a different site or URL - that would look messy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,626 ✭✭✭smoke.me.a.kipper

if you had the custon avatar hack, couldn't you set it to only work with images of a certain size (h/w and filesize)??

having custom avatars for no-lifers might encourage spam.

it's not that i want a diff Avatar from what you have given us there is loads to pick from which is great, what i wanted was if i pick avatar X then no other user on the boards could use it, ie it would become my avatar till i picked a diff one.

Logic1 use's a avatar and ever time i see it on the boads i think it's him, but there is a other user who use's it as well, so i keep thinking it's logic1 when it's not.

you could reset all the avatar befor seting it up then the first person who gets it can keep it till the other person changes.

Yeah I think Clouds idea of giving the no lifers their own avatar if they requested is a good idea. TBH giving everyone a private or custom avatar is out of the question due to the sheer number of users on the boards. The lads work enough as it is without having to add a couple of thousand private avatars for specific people hehe

anyway it does get annoying when ppl mistake u for someone else based on avatar but hey thats why the names there..

    Thats not logic1
    logic1 uses a diff Avatar

    OK for the last time
i did not ask if people could have there own Avatar.

What I said was that just one person could use the avatar out of the 1500 that cloud let us us.

IE no one but me coudl use Coyote avatar
not new or diff avatars just the one's there all ready.

Loggers is right! There's too many people on the boards unless you plan making more avatars or something. The people who join last are stuck with all the crap ones, like 'The Count' from Sesame Street. smile.gif Anyway, who else uses the Coyote symbol?
Crap, just read Coyote's last post, LOL smile.gif Yeah actually that's a good idea for people who don't want to share smile.gif

Yea I understand you just want to use the exisitng avatars coyote but it would be alot of work. I don't know how many people use boards on a regular basis, maybe we could get a ballpark figure from Cloud but I know it got well in excess of 500,000 impressions last month. That's half a million impressions in one month now I know impressions doesn't directly indicate the amount of posters or regular unique visitors but even if it was just a fraction of that numer like 5,000 regular posters.. how long would it take to rename 5,000 files!! And that's not even including new members that sign up every day... hell it'd be a full time job just assigning avatars to people.

Again if there was some cut off limit on when you became eligible for a custom avatar that'd be a bit easier. Like after a 1000 or 1,500 posts you get to have an avatar assigned to you but it'd have to be a custom one because there may be others using the same avatar as you already.. so in this case you'd still have to change avatars thus maybe loosing abit of your familiarty with the avatar you had used for the past 1000 posts.

All in all at the moment I can't see this as a very feasible idea.

    .logic.

I do not see how hard it would be
all you need to do is have a list of the Avatars in use
then when people go to pick there Avatar
the list of avatar that they can pick just does not have the one's in use.

    sounds easy to me

You know, the way Yahoo for example has you enter a URL during your registration process for a pic for your profile.

But a lot of the beauty of boards.ie is its simplicity so perhaps that would complicate it too much.

if i ever get my own avatar (hint, hint tongue.gif)i want this one (and i made it myself too!). it's one of the guys from Gorillaz.

custom avartars be cool, but it would really have to be done properly. and mods might have to be even more vigilant against porn and such.

well thats what i think anyway.

Due to my difficulties with dyslexia I don’t post as much as some people but I do read boards a lot (and don’t Spam on them S-M-A-K). I do post regularly on topics I find interesting but it takes someone like me as long to post once then others to post ten times. frown.gif

P.S. Could you not also 12 click people who have not posted on boards over a set time.(if you have to many members?)There looks like there are a lot of people who sing up post once or twice then never come back.

Heres an idea that may be worth considering. instead of mods doing all that work why not change the code of boards so that a user can in his/her first word enter a code what ever it might be and the location of there picture and that it must be of a set size to be uploaded (code in boards to prevent pics above a certain size or from a certain location) it may sound sad but i think its possible and a simple answer to this trival problem.

I only know what I am taught

I think it would be better to give privileges by time rather than by post count, otherwise everyone who said that post count doesn't matter (on another thread) is a damn liar.

But seriously in every other situation I can think of you get rewarded by time commited (couldn't think of a better word), rather than time wasted (i.e. spammers).

That's if you end up doing anything at all, because you would have problems from either side of the fence whatever you decide, I suggest you just sit on it and hold tight.

Well - The post count theory is unfair - I mean, you have people that have made account since the dawn of time, but only browse the boards, rather than post on them... Think it was mentioned already, sorry...

Anyway - Custom avatars would be great and should, somehow, be implemented... Just not on the post count...

    Please not the post count...

    ...damn post count...

All the Mod's should get personal avatar's and some of the more upstanding members of the community, this doesnt mean post count....but post quality.

I disagree with all the mods, and upstanding members would result in big ol flame wars.

You could however do it on somethign like all the people who have been registered for a year or more get it.

ok after reading this back yet again ... I'll save The admins the bother since I run several of my own boards too and have come accross this prob.

    Allowing users to upload avatars.
Reasons for: saves time on admins/mod part

Reasons Against: They could upload a picture of ANYTHING. The excuse ... sure the admin/mod can just remove it, that is just wasting their time. also you can only control the file size they upload not the height and width.

Basing Custom Avatars on Users lenght of time here or post count
Reasons for: can't think of any it's just messy and absurd.

reasons against: means Admins/mod would have to go through the process of tracking down the users time of registeration and or post count ... they can do it through the control panel ( it's about 10 clicks ), it's just messy

Allow users to specify url to avatar on their own webspace
reasons for: saves webspace on boards ( not much granted ) and low admin/mod time consumption.

reasons against: Same as allowing to upload custom avatars. how about I replace mine with a nice big swatzika('cuse the spelling) plus could be a large picture(deminsions) that can be fixed by editting the post template though

biggest problem here is the sheer number of users and posts, it would be near impossible to keep track of all custom avatar upload/supplied by users. the number of posts that go through this board at peak time is pretty high.

I personally have an option where users can upload an custom gif file to a seperate dir I get a message telling me that there is one and if check it out if it's ok I make it their custom avatar ( actually takes like 5 seconds :-)) but I only have 170-180 users so it's not a big time issue.

Personally I think those people moaning about avatar should give it a rest... and READ THE NAMES above the avatars. because if you keep complaining about this, I certainly can see cloud just removing them completely. They are there to add to the post not to become your PERSONAL trade mark. most of the avatars look pretty similar anyway being alot of simpson ones all yellow and pretty small.

if somebody is using the same avatar, just ask nicely if they wouldn't mind changing ( IF you have been using it for a good while before them ) but god sake don't act like a child and start threads like "OI!! ****** STOP STEALING MY AVATAR!" one it's not steal ... since you are using the avatar provide by another person(s) for those using simpson avatar ... or better yet you could change your avatar.

The Simpson owners could easily ask you all to stop using the simpson avatars and have more right than you asking somebody else to.

I have no problem against moderators and admins being the only ones allowed to have custom avatars ... Hell I think they should be given ones they've earned it they have all done a great job of moding these boards. while the rest of you just ***** and whine over a tiny little gif image??? seriously is it going to hurt your life that much.
