Ok, this is following on from the many debates about how our regulatory signage (stuff in red circles) is rubbish compared to the rest of Europe. Well, find attached a document from 1960's Britain where they reveal that the regulatory signage we use in Ireland to this day is the 1053 Vienna convention FIRST DRAFT. The final protocol was changed to add such things as white arrows on blue backgrounds for a compulsory manouvre, while maintaining a red circle and strikethrough for a prohibited one. The British document (which was comisioned at a time when Britain were reviewing their entire signage system) seems to favour the draft over what was eventually chosen because it was more logical and consistent-red circle=compulsory, red circle with strikethrough=prohibited. Even our odd 'No Overtaking' with the off centre strikethrough is from the draft!!

Note th large arrowheads we also use in Ireland compared to the UK. Quite an interesting couple of documents for all those interested in road signage.
