Subbed journals list oddities

When I subscribe to more than four journals, the names stop appearing in the sub-menu in the menu bar at the top of the screen. All I get is a pixel wide line instead of "So-and-so's journal", or a single asterisk, if there's a new entry in it. 'Tis a bit odd. Any ideas?
