Ah the glory days of these fantastic titles.....still in my opinion three of the most engrossing games i've ever played. Everything went together perfectly....the muzak, the fighting, the bosses, the special attacks and the characters and secrets of these games really defined the mega drive for me.. i remember many days i spent playing 5 hour long sessions of sor and revenge of shinobi....anybody know if there are any plans to ever re-release these games???

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 125 ✭✭SonicDoom2005

Completley forgot that and it was on the 3 in 1 cartridge with them¬!!!!!

So my top 10 MD games would be:

    10.The Haunting (featuring polter guy)
    9.Alien Storm
    8.Zero Tolerance
    7.Sonic 2
    6.Altered Beast
    5.Streets of Rage 1
    4.Streets of Rage 3
    3.Revenge of Shinobi
    2.Terminator 2
    1.Streets of Rage 2

Heh, used to cycle about three miles to my friends house a couple of times a week and we'd end up playing that game for hours on end.

I hated the way if you played 2 player you had to fight each other and then do the last couple of levels again, used to piss me off royally cause i usually lost in that fight.

I think it may have been one of the first games to have mulitple endings? You could either team up to hand mr x his ass or fight each other, then fight all the way back to kick his ass yourself and become the boss.. And who could forget the police cars with the rocket launchers and mortar bombs???

I used to LOVE Revenge of Shinobi .... but I always got stuck on a level (I think it was fairly near the end) where you were on a pier/harbour and had to jump betewwn a load of dinghys in the water that were spaced REALLY far apart and enemy ninjas would jump out of the water and attack while you were in the air.
Anyone else remember that ? And more importantly did anyone ever clear that ?

    ON TOPIC :
Road Rash consumed alot of my time too ... great game

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 125 ✭✭SonicDoom2005

worst level in revenge of shinobi was the factory with the lava pits and second would have been the scrap yard. the pier was easy, was just about timing. I cleared shinobi about a year and a half after i got it.....the only game that ever took me that long due to sheer difficulty! road rash was class...nothing could beat the rush of grabbing the chain off another biker, swinging it around your head and cracking it across their skull then checking the rear view to watch them collapse off the bike... :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,584 ✭✭✭c - 13

    Nah the factory was grand.
I could get to the pier without losing a life usually but never could clear it.
It resulted in many many controllers broken in rage though :D

Ah revenge of shinobi was great,it was mad the way marvel helped out with the game by letting them use spiderman as one of the boss's and in an earlier version of the game batman appeared i **** you not,im playing ninja gaiden on the x-box....sheer brilliance.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 125 ✭✭SonicDoom2005

only game i ever broke a controller because of was a game called smash brothers.so horribly frustrating and truly lived up to its name....

Yeah you had to fight spiderman after the train level didnt you ?

The Junkyard boss always kinda reminded me of the hulk too ... big strong guy who threw cars at you and turned green as you damaged him. (but it was a robot when you destroyed him though)

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,410 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Revenge of Shinobi was fantastic. Also very long for a game of its type. I never beat the last boss. Anyone know an easy way or a way quick enough to save your girlfriend?

Streets of rage was very good but was outclassed by the even better sequels. All the games had unforgettable soundtracks. It was a great game to rent but it also never got old if you bought it because of the excellent co-op mode.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 125 ✭✭SonicDoom2005

Your girlfriends fate is counted by a bar of some sort if i remember correctly and the best way to attack the boss is to get in, hit hard and fast then get back out and do your best to avoid being hit.... ANybody remember the brain in the glass jar aboard the plane? And secondly, that beautiful, almost pornographic ending music to sor 1?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,584 ✭✭✭c - 13

Now stop me if i'm wrong but did this game involve you being in an arena with enemies coming in from four entrances, and you having to shoot them all. Then every time you cleared a level this guy would appear on screen with his arm around two chicks and say "I'd buy that for a dollar" ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13 Victor Von Doom

I think you fight him in the junk yard level but its been so long since i played it,i remember getting to the last level but got too annoyed by the cave parts, played shinobi on the ps2 but it kept the only bad part of the old shinobi in it,the way you have to go back to the start of the level when you die, streets of rage 3 was class, you could get a secret chracter 2 levels into that was better than the original 3 you could pick, some ninja dude,

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 125 ✭✭SonicDoom2005

thats the one c-13....what a horrible sh1te game....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13 Victor Von Doom

No that was smash t.v,rock hard game

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,584 ✭✭✭c - 13

    rock hard game
    Damn straight -
doubt i ever came anywhere near clearing that one.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13 Victor Von Doom

they took that line"ill but that for a dollar" line from the gameshow that was playing in the shop windo in robocop the movie.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 125 ✭✭SonicDoom2005

speaking of robocop anybody play robocop vs terminator (cleared this) or terminator 2....a kind of first person game. And does anybody remember Lethal Enforcers, that light gun game where you were like this cop or something?

p.s did any mega drive games have a save option of any kind or was a mem card ever released? I remember getting passwords to come back to levels but thats about it....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,584 ✭✭✭c - 13

Yeah - cleared robocop vs terminator too - loved it.
Dont really remember T2 on the sega but i can remember playing lethal enforceres in the arcade, it paved the way for time crisis and the like

Only some did, the only one i remember having this was the first proper RPG i ever bought -
a game called "Phantasy Star IV" and it was sheer brilliance too ... i'd love to get my hands on it again. I thought it was a game well ahead of its time.

It only had three save slots though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 125 ✭✭SonicDoom2005

even though it was really simplistic and after about 4 plays of a level you could kill every bad guy blindfolded....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,584 ✭✭✭c - 13

absolutly love streets of rage, recently played the games on emulators and they are still very enjoyable and helluva tough.

I remember gettin quite far ( well quite far as i saw it, i was only about 7 in shenobi) can remember the brain, was that aboard a plane or helicopter? the hulk like guy. I think the level i got stuck on involved you climbing up buildings onto a motorway or something like that.

    Ring any bells people?

Yep rings bells here. The Brain was indeed on the plane. Also there was a hulk guy in the scrapyard level that throws cars at you. Reminded me of the terminator he gradually lost his skin and had an exoskeleton underneath. I also remember the building level and the horribly difficult highway bit before it with the cars that ran you over. However the worst was the level before the boss which involved a huge maze that had to be learned off otherwise you could end up back at the start of the level if you took the wrong door.

The spiderman boss was great. they had to get rid of the batman bit of the boss though :(

Ah yes....the scrapyard was with that guy, and his skin changed colour everytime you damaged him and everytually revealed an exoskeleton.....

That building part was annoying, with all the soldiers....I don't think I ever got past the motorway part....

Lethal Enforcer was crap, T2 lightgun game was okay, SoR was THE game to own that generation for the MD

Yeah lathal enforcers on the MD was a dreadful conversion. Loved the arcade game.

Have to disagree about SoR being the game to own on the MD. I've yet to find some one who didn't love probotector, rocket knight adventures and THE game of the MD, Gunstar Heroes.

    **SIGHS**

All ive been able to think about since i started reading this thread is streets of rage, golden axe and shinobi ...

    I MISS MY SEGA

I need to get an emulator and these games .... maybe that will curb the urges.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 125 ✭✭SonicDoom2005

I know the feeling c-13....what i wouldn't give to spend a quiet sunday afternoon with my mega drive and play some of my more obscure games....like captain america, cliffhanger and true lies. An of course a few rounds of the classics golden axe 1 to 3 sor 1 to 3. you know the way sega has released the sonic games in one package for all consoles? I wonder will they ever release the tru classics like that.....I would die happily on the spot if i ever walked into game and saw the streets of rage collection for xbox....ah one can dream..... :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,584 ✭✭✭c - 13

Just out of curiosity - I know its easy enough to pick up an old sega console but how easy is it to find the games ? And how much would you be talking per cartridge would ye say ?

It really all depends on the game. Sonic 2 can be picked up for about 50c since everyone and their dog owned it, and rarities and highly sought after games like Gunstar Heroes could go for 100 euros or upwards.

Or you can get them free using emulators :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 125 ✭✭SonicDoom2005

The problem with emulators is that the odd time they will contain viruses....would you destroy a machine worth 1000 + just to play amega drive game? I known the tesco lifestyle shop near me was selling mds up until 2 months ago for €60!!! no games for the md, but they do stock saturn titles like NBA 1998 and Panzer Dragoon

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,584 ✭✭✭c - 13

Yeah, I should really look for an emulator for those ...
    Any suggestions ?
Still though, its not the same as having to old sega.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 125 ✭✭SonicDoom2005

Anybody know if those massive sega stores in tokyo would stock the european back catalogue of md games and accesories??

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,410 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Gens is the best megadrive emulator.

You can get emulators from www.zophar.net

Can't tell you where to get roms from but it's easy enough to find.

haha yeah i got a BOXED, UNOPENED Snes for the princely sum of....2 euro!!!
Complete with donkey kong country 2, then picked up flashback and another world..happy days :D
Have an old mega drive kicking around too but i think the controllers might be fubar'd

SonicDoom, I think you're overestimating the chances of getting a virus from a ROM. If you have virus software you should be able to scan the file before using it anyway.

Streets of Rage was a great game. Never cared much for the sequels. Possibly the best sound track ever.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 125 ✭✭SonicDoom2005

Soundtrack was indeed fantastic man, really nice "summer evening" style music.... Although streets of rage 1 was a good game, the sequel, number 2 has to be my favorite out of the series... way better gameplay, way better bosses and more interesting levels..

Have to agree 100% with this. I own all three and as recently as Janaury of this year I dusted down SOR2 for a blast. Absolutely fantastic game. For me the punching sound (sad I know) and the music was the best on SOR2. Love the bit in the disco!!!

Interestingly, the PAL version of SOR3 goes for a reasonable penny on ebay for a megadrive game.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 125 ✭✭SonicDoom2005

Favorite level in sor 2 was the baseball field when you get to open a can of whoop ass on those fat guys....

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,410 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

I remember that most of the characters had names which were the nicknames of some of my friends. 'Hey Beano look, I'm kicking your ass'. Well it was funny at the time as a kid high on too much sugar.

Man the last level was such a bastard. It took hours of roaming around to randomly find the right sequence of doors. After i'd say at least 5 hours doing it I knew the sequence off but the final boss was a complete bitch. Anyone remember the cheat for infinite shurikens? If you put it on 00 and left it for 10 secs it changed into invinite. You really did need them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,145 ✭✭✭DonkeyStyle \o/

Yeah fond memories alright... I think it'd be cool if they made another RoadRash with a NFSU vibe... hanging out and talking tough to the other racers... it seems like something they always wanted to put in the game, but had to settle for those stills.
You'd think the NFSU2 style would be a dream come true for them... riding around shopping for bike upgrades.

Every time I play GTA and ride around on a bike, I miss RoadRash... especially now in San Andreas where one of the radio songs (Soundgarden - Rusty Cage) was also featured in the PC version of RoadRash.

You know what would be a revolution? If Nintendo released the back catalogue of Sega games for download. Now that would be sweet.

(And yeah, I know it's not gonna happen. Pipedreams kids, pipedreams).
