Hi there, Just looking for some advice on building muscle around knee joint.

Am coming back from 3rd knee reconstruction and have been advised that deep squatting is not advisable. Can any of you give me some advice on best exercises to build up muscle around my knee.

    Thanks a lot

After surgery, its important that you undertake initial exercise under the guidance of a physiotherapist who can advise you precisely which exercises are appropriate at what time. There are many muscle groups that move and stabilise the knee - this is quite specialist stuff and it would be best to consult a physio.

You should have been referred already if you have had surgery - just ask specifically those questions to him/her.....

    I agree, see a physio.

thanks for teh advice guys, you are of course correct in recommending physio's recommendations:

however I'm one week after surgery and am obviously being treated/guided by physiotherapist. unfortunately I have been down this road previously(9 knee ops!!) and am somewhat dissapointed with certain physio's level of expertise in relation to topics such as my question.

On that note could anyone recommend a physio that they have used for knee rehab and the putting together of comprehensive rehab/training plans?

    Your help is most appreciated.

What part of the country are you in?

I had knee trouble last year and went to Johnson McEvoy in Limerick. He did some electro therapy, got me doing leg raises, and did some massage on my quads (which were pulling at my knee the wrong way). After 3 sessions and a bunch of exercises at home (lunges, stepups etc.), I was good as new.

You need a physio with a special interest in orthopaedic injuries, preferably sports too. Sports rehab physio may be best. If you are somewhat disappointed in your current physio, a change of practitioner may be of benefit to you as you need to like each other to be effective in rehab.......

Hi TmB I'm living in Churchtown Dublin 14 and working in Tallaght.

i think I'll take your advice and start looking for a more suitable physio in either of these two areas.

    thanks for the responses

Leg extensions strengthen the connections to the patella and are particularly good for rehab work, just don't go too heavy. Any physio will recommend these...

Both previous comments are helpful, although it is imperative it is done under guidance. It is painful to initially move a damaged joint - a physio knows which is good pain and which is bad.... without guidance, you can do damage......

You should have plenty of choice living in dublin.........

One of the guys who works with me is a physical therapist specialising in sports injuries etc He has just come back from travelling with one of the cycling teams on the Ras Tour of Ireland and is an excellent therapist.

Contact me via a private message if you think he could help (he is based in Foxrock).

    All the best
