Which way do you prefer them?

Has to be 12" for me. The best format ever.

    10"
    has to be 7"
picture discs and coloured vinyl are always more likely to come on 7"
have a stack of about 200 at home

12" of pure pleasure. How can you argue with the 12" when my reply is always:

    Blue Monday.

    10"
you never really get alternative/indie on 12" though anyway
always on 7" or now and again you might get 10" for a ep

i agree although blue monday is the most famous 12 of all & does fall into that category.
personally CD singles are a pain in the arse but you do get some good ones going cheap once theyve "peaked"
Abbey disks & freebird in Dublin always have a bargain cd single box worth rooting in

That's true, it is mainly a dance format now. But when I find a band I like on 12" I get very excited (sad, I know).

not nowadays; predominately a dance format with some exceptions
but back when I started buying records (early 80's) it was glorious.
I have shelves of indie 12"s from 1987-1992 when the format ruled.

What's advantages do 12" have over CDs? Personally I don't buy singles, just albums, but I never really got the whole vinyl experience

They look nicer for one. Vinyl has a better sound range than CD for another.

yeah & 12" vinyl single is better quality than 7" -grooves are less squashed/crushed together etc.
for albums its a different story with 5 or 6 or more tracks all squashed into 12 inches although i do love a vinyl crackle !!

12" sound quality is far superior in my opinion
LPs have a lower output level as they can be compressed groove-wise but frequently sound better than CD albums.

I have been buying music since 1981. I bought my first CD in 1987 but have continued to buy both since then.

Nowadays I buy more CDs (buy a lot of back catalogue/remastered reissues stc) but try and get vinyl for most new releases and usually buy a lot of second hand LPs once a month or so.

However if I see a Simply Vinyl LP costing €25 and a CD reissue of the same album costing €10 I will buy the CD.
