I don't know. Why did the smokers start to smoke?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,745 ✭✭✭StupidLikeAFox

Because lucifer said unto them, "inhale toxic fumes into thy lungs" and the smokers didst take that faithful first drag, and were seduced by the disgusting aroma and foul breath of their brethren, and some wore leather jackets and were cool. And some wore cool hats, and cast their gave downwards whilst shrouded in a veil of smoke, and they were cool. This is the word of the Col. *nods wisely*

Because tobacco companies spent millions on advertising/product placement to make it look like the cool thing to do.

It's something I've always wondered about. There doesn't seem to be any reason, yet people continue to start doing it...

Because I was curious. I liked it. I don't smoke cigarettes.

When do smokers get a break!?

I doubt it's because smokers are loaded, as most likely when current smokers started smoking they were a lot cheaper than today.

as for me i wouldn't touch the cancer sticks of death.

In my infinite wisdom I never thought of that. But do people actually like it the first time?

id say people smoke because at some point they made a decision to try it,
    enjoyed it,
    and continued to do it.

my question would be why do some non-smokers think that people who smoke are idiots who cant make decisions for themselves.
that somehow not smoking makes you a better person in absolutely everything you do.
everyone makes decisions that others see as right or wrong.

    non-smoker for 4 years.

    how was your first beer?
    or your first whiskey?

most people dont enjoy the taste of beer t first,
    yet continue to drink it.

Nobody likes it the first time ffs. They just cough.

    God damn you Chalk.
Took 14 posts, I was going to say that even though I dont smoke.
    Damn you..

still, it does something.. and it's smelly and disgusting.

"when they cop on tbh, and stop making others breathe their smoke!"

its called the smoking ban. If you go somewhere where the smoking ban isn't in effect, go somewhere else.

Oh and if you're going to go into a self-righteous rant, you might want to relieve yourself in the corrupted thread a few spaces down.

Of course they can make decisions for themselves. It's just a very stupid decision, from an outsiders point of view. I don't think of myself as better than smokers in every way, just in the "I won't pay money to kill myself slowly" way.

and that, in all honesty is your choice.
i have no problem with it and dont go round asking why people dont smoke.
i dont even mind asking people why i started smoking.

its the self righteous attitude of anti-smokers that gets my goat ;)

in the home? neither of my parents smoke and when someone comes in and smokes it reeks and isnt fair on others, smoking should just be banned altogether

its called the smoking ban. If you go somewhere where the smoking ban isn't in effect, go somewhere else.
And how much moaning did the smokers do because they had to smoke in fresh air?
    is it that lethal??

i vomited after 1st can of guinness, wouldnt let the bastid beat me tho so drank another one, took me ages but i kept it down!! :D

Well the others shouldnt be allowed smoke in your home. Simple as. And who are these "smokers" you talk of? Iirc smokers were pretty much divided. I for one like the smoking ban, as i dont like sitting in a smoky pub.

Now as far as i see, theres actually nothing you can do. Your whinging. Smoke causes cancer etc etc, but its a fact of life so deal with it.

I don't really care if people smoke. It has very little impact on me. I'm just curious as to why they started.

And I'm sure you've gotten drunk at some stage and talked rubbish all night to someone... a far worse fate than a slight chance helping someone develop emphysema from smoking some cigarettes in front of them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,317 ✭✭✭Chalk

    your house, your rules.
    ive no problem with that.

how much would you moan if a smoker told you to go outside to get away from the smoke?

    public house - public rules.
anyway, the smoking ban is here now, so theres no point arguing over it,
my local is pretty much empty these days,
with most people, staff included popping outside regularly for a smoke

"smoking should just be banned altogether"

sometimes I cry at night...maybe this is why.

I welcomed the smoking ban as I didn't like the smell, not because of the unbased arguments that 2nd hand smoke increases the chance of getting cancer. It's comments like this that often get me defending smokers.

    No i wont.
Smoke thats filtered from the ciggerette is put back in the air for others to breate in. Thats not fair. Smoking should be a choice. Passive smokers dont have that choice. You should think about that next time ye blow yer smoke into others faces.

they should think about the fact that we're smoking before they come near us.

ive never blown smoke into someones face that didnt want it ;)
    anyway
there is not enough of that smoke put back in the air to do any damge to you.
plenty of studies have shown this,
    none have shown the opposite.

its a simple answer to the why keep doing it if its not nice at the start qestion.
you agree that if somethings isnt nice at the start youll stick with it to see what the fun is all about.

My grandfather was dead 12 years when the doctor accused my gradmother of smoking all her life, when she had never once smoked... it was his fault for smoking 60 a day in the house... don't say that passive smoking does sfa when it obviously does....

I do that sober when im drunk im generally quiet/too sick to talk.
Drinking is only hurting yourself, smoking is damaging others!
why else would they have banned it from public places???

    it doenst.
anecdotal evidence is not scientific proof.

either way what study did the doctor do, besides draw, what he and many others see, as an obvious conclusion.

    sorry if i sound harsh,
but there is NO scientific study that links seconnd hand smoke to cancer,
and i WILL argue that point.

So why do they put it as a warning on the packs eh??
    Filling space?
Second hand smoke it just as dangerous.

"What should i have done> allowed her to continue doing it?"

Well if it was my best mate (Even if she was a "fookn bit(h") I'd probably ask her politely to stop breathing it into my face.

Sometimes I think about changing my signature...it's times like these that convince me to keep it the same.

    is
    no
    scientific
    link
    between
    passive
    smoking
    and
    lung
    cancer.

please read up on it, as im not in the mood to go googlgin for the w.h.o reports that state it right now.
