    Thank You!

You are very good at drawing, but why make him look like he has Downs Syndrome? I'm being serious, before people start having a go at me - I agree with FX Meister, but I'm being a bit more tactful with my wording.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,645 ✭✭✭Shrimp

Alright fair enough, you may think his face is slightly disfigured, but to be honest, i think all of his face is fine bar the Mouth, the reason the mouth loks like that, is because the picture i drew from was extreamly small, it was about 1 inch X 1 inch, so it was hard to make it out, also, he was shouting in the picture, so that would explain why is mouth is in an unusal position.

finally, you said: "why make him look like he has Downs Syndrome?"

That is not tactful at all, you are approaching your critisim in a immature way, if you knew the slightest bit about art, you wouldn't say that.

From now on can people comment in a more respecful way, and for those who have difficulty in recognizing what sounds stupid and what doesn't.. it helps if you say it aloud before typing it. Good luck with that,

    Thanks for your insightful thoughts.

So I need to "know" about art to have an opinion on it? I said it was good - you're very talented, but he does look mentally handicapped. That's MY opinion.

I have to agree wuth fx meister too. He does look a bit funny and dont you dare accuse me of being immature or insulting to people with special needs. If you put up pics for people to comment on then you need to be willing to take good and bad criticism on them

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,524 ✭✭✭✭Gordon

The mouth looks really weird. It's like something from the video to "Pop music" where moving mouths are stitched onto photographs of famous people. It seems to be drawn the other way round, ie - as if you are drawing Malcolm X's right profile with his left profile's mouth.

Keep em coming though, you seem to have talent for drawing, it's just a shame you rushed this first picture.

Oh and Shrimp, you have been extremely condescending in some of your posts on Photoshoppage in the past, and quite unhelpful in many cases. I would imagine, though, that you thought that you were being helpful as I imagine the previous posters are maybe thinking this too.

Ok, fair enough I was nit-picking on your comment, I take it into account, and yeah, I do agree it looks off a bit, but ah well, it's in my scraps. By "know" I meant, it would help if you used art terms, as that way I will know what you mean, and understand what you mean better.

Just talking about nit-picking.. you said he looks mentally handicapped.. if it is a physical feature that is wrong, as it would most likely be in a drawing, wouldn't that not be physicaly handicapped? Nevermind..

Yeah, of course I am willing to recieve both + and - comments, but it's how it is phrased as I have said already. Dont worry though.

by the way, thank you for the add to the friends list, I've added you too. :)

Yeah I did rush it, and thats why it is in my scraps.

Anyway guys, thanks for your comments, and sorry if I came across as been a agressive, thanks agian though.

    Quality. Where was it taken?

In an estate near to my own. In the rathfarnham area.

It was drawing towards 10pm, the sun was massive (not the biggest I've seen it, but still big) It was setting very low in the sky, I know that that doesn't sound right, but it was taking ages for it to set. As what happens in the summer.

From my area, as I am higher up, I can see as far as ballymun flats, or whats left of them, and beyond, I'm pretty sure you can see the mourne mountains on a clear day.. or what ever mountain range is just above the northern half of dublin. From where I was when I took the photo, it was the estate in the foreground, then middle ground (this was a few shades lighter) more estates (lighter again) and in the very far distance (it was getting so light that you could bearly make out some of the buildings as the suns bright rays during twilight create a mask over the surrounding area.

Also on another note, I'm not sure if it's just the way i viewed the image, but if you look closely you can see a jet-stream just to the right of the tree on the left of the picture. in between the two trees. It's hard to make out, but that was a planes jet-stream, that and the clouds (been very long, and high up) give the feeling, of distance, and slowness, it was a very peaceful sunset, the suns colours seem to be warmest towards the night. not feel, but look the hottest.

    glad you liked.

Why am I childish, because I think he looks physically handcapped? Would you prefer if I told you it was a very bad sketch, no sense of proportion what so ever and the mough/chin/neck area is the worst. I've seen better from a ten year old.

If you must know.. the picture I drew my one from is from this book cover.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0345350685/qid=1118708015/sr=1-8/ref=sr_1_11_8/202-3194034-1594267

Click the book cover to enlarge.

The picture in the middle, the B&W one is the one i drew, as u can see it's not the clearest one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 106 ✭✭r@t

hey dude im a artist- you sketches are ok, the proportions are way off in some though. and your shading is to smooth (a common problem associated with "rubbing of the finger") but ther not too bad. i suggest that when your drawing a face to draw a line going through the eyes at the start. then draw a vertical line through this line in the center of the face (this depends on the angle of the pose) note the most important thing here is- no matter what angle the face is at the second line will run 90 degrees to the first- no matter what, your features will be in more accurate places if you follow this. also you should measure features relative to surrounding areas using your pencil
    as you go.
some other notes on feature position:
this is a rough guide not a exact measurement (every face is slightly different)
    in a front on view-
    1. face width 5 eyes. the space between the eyes and on either side is roughly an eye.
    2. the edge of the nostrils falls directly under the tear ducts.
    3. the cornor edges of the mouth fall half way through the eyes.
    4. the eyes are almost exactly centre(vertically)on the face.

well i cant be bothered to type any more, so good luck with what ive said.

oh by the way my stuffs at www.rat-tsang.deviantart.com

cool thanks, The reason that house is in a good few shots is because at time time fo the evening when the sun is nicest, it is usually behind, or near that house, so thats why it is there.. that is when I take my photos from my house.

I have not posted an update here recently as I was in the process of getting a new camera. I've now got a Canon G6, quite an upgrade from the non-versatile, but surprisingly powerful Samsung Digimax 202.

Enough about the camera, here's in action:

    http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/20381374/
-- Taken as a tram past in the dead of night. They can go extreamly fast. This picture to me looks like beams of lightning, the blue against the pitch black gives it a strong electrical look.

-- Taken in an underground carpark, deep below the surface, late one night. This barren 'landscape' gives a real feeling, of unease and uncertainty. As every floor looks the same, one feels lost and alone.

    http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/20380913/
-- This was taken on a tram bridge. The subject is lost and disorientated, confused about what he is doing here.

    http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/20381066/

Thank you for looking at the picture, and enjoy..

so what would one use to put a border aroung photos?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,645 ✭✭✭Shrimp

Here's what you would do. (Presuming you have some sort of editing software, NOT MSPaint though)

    1.) Get your pic (100pixels X 100pixels)

2.) Make a box two pixels more on both sides (102pixels X 102pixels)

    3.) Now centre the original image (100pixels X 100pixels) over the box (102pixels X 102pixels) you made.

Now when you have your image with the black 1pixel frame around it, then you can make the canvas size bigger, I make it 100pixels bigger on both width and height. Make the canvas colour white, or oppisite to the colour of the one pixel border.

    Here are typical matching colours.

If it is a dark picture, some times it is best to use a black frame, with a white border.

If it is a bright picture, it is better to use a white frame, with a black border.

    Hope that helped.

Ok then, but why? Am I just being a bit of a philistine, or what? Soft focus I can understand, motion blurring is Ok in certain situations, deliberately putting backgrounds out of focus using a short DOF I can understand, but putting the whole picture out of focus? Sorry, but I just don't "get it" :)

I'm flattered that you are asking me for tips. Well considering I've only been taking photos about 5 months, all I can say is. Take multiple pictures of the subject, that way you can pic (pardon the pun) and choose your favorite from the group.

When you're talking a photo, take your time. Look at the subject, try and find interesting aspects of it and develop it. Photography (Art In General), is a very broad area. You can take a photo of anything, or everything.

If you are more interested in landscape/scenery shots, try getting a better camera. One with a wider lens. Look on google for some tutorials too.

Have fun with photography, dont get annoyed if what you are trying to take doesn't turn out right. It's a leisurely activity, so enjoy it.

This thing I did was a first for me, I was just trying to recreate something I seen on an advert. It was meant to be more of a graphic design picture rather than a photo. Hence the Lines, and font. I would never put font in my pictures normally.
