Been moved up to September 23rd now. Should be in UGC/Cineworld and perhaps the Screen and the IFC.

    Not too long now.

And it also looks like Optimum have snapped up the entire Ghibli back catalog. Also including Laputa,Kikis and several others that have already been released.

They have trailers on the UK discs for many of the others like Only Yesterday, Whixper of the Heart, Totoro, etc.

Optimum also have a bit more sense with the multi-audio tracks i.e. Buena vista released only dubtitled Laputa, which makes the j-audio version hard to watch (you get to see how much they messed witht he script).

Jesus, that's excellent news! I was very happy with Optimum's Spirited Away & Grave Of The Fireflies DVDs and I'm extremely happy that they're releasing Nausicaa & The Cat Returns, but I'm also very happy to hear they're releasing the entire Ghibli works. I already own Princess Mononoke, Laputa/Castle In The Sky and Kiki's Delivery Service, but I think I'll be buying them again.

I agree though, the dubtitling on Laputa was painfull to watch, and James Van Der Beek even more painfull to listen to. Same with Mononoke and Kiki, but at least they didn't have such a painfull cast.

Just doing a search on play.com I see there are release dates for all the Ghibli films.
    Pre-order time! :D

This has really made my day!
I think Optimum are an absolutely excellent company, I once had to return a defective DVD to them (one of a batch of defective DVDs) and they were simply great to deal with, excellent aftersales altogether. I honestly can't say enough good things about them.

Pity some of them aren't out untill well into next year. Oh well.

There's a good interview with Miyazaki over at The Guardian:

There is a rumour that when Harvey Weinstein was charged with handling the US release of Princess Mononoke, Miyazaki sent him a samurai sword in the post. Attached to the blade was a stark message: "No cuts."

The director chortles. "Actually, my producer did that. Although I did go to New York to meet this man, this Harvey Weinstein, and I was bombarded with this aggressive attack, all these demands for cuts." He smiles. "I defeated him."

Miramax caved to pressure and released the Pricess Mononoke DVD with a Japanese language track-and subtitles, for the bloody english track only!! It kind of irritates me watching it.

Just saw that they pushed it back a month for whatever reason... ugh.

Thankfully it'll be playing at the IFC from Friday in subtitled form, times are on the site.

[EDIT] Just read the your post again fully bada_bing, hopefully they'll sorted out soon as they still list full showings of the movie. [/EDIT]

Just checked the IFC listings, Howl's Moving Castle has been removed completely. Sucks donkey balls.

It's still being released throughout the UK this week, so those up you up North can still get to see it.

The only cinema that I can think of that would show it is the Screen, but that's looking unlikely.

Just checked the IFC listings, Howl's Moving Castle has been removed completely.
    This is from their newsletter:

CHANGE TO IFI PROGRAMME: Due to circumstances beyond our control, we will not be opening Hayao Miyazaki's HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE on September 23rd as advised in the IFI programme - the date for this film has been moved. In its place, we will open two films - on Sept. 23rd, for an exclusive one-week engagement at the IFI, we open Sally Potter's highly acclaimed YES, starring Joan Allen. On Sept. 30th, we open the new film from David Cronenberg, A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE, starring Viggo Mortensen, Ed Harris, and William Hurt.

Still dosn't say why it was removed.

Don't think the suggestions of downloading licensed anime is appreciated here lads...

Since it's actually coming to Ireland, I'd prefer to hold out and watch it on a fat screen. To tell you the truth I hardly know anything about the film so far.

The story is really based on a novel which was very popular in Japan.

So the story is quite different to the other stories like Kiki's Delivery, Laputa, Spirit Away.

Anyway, the story is most able magic, black magic really. A girl called Sofia was cursed, becoming a old woman. Trying to find a spell to break the spell, she searched for Howl's Moving Castle. Hoping that the mage could break the spell for her.

However the story had some twist and turns before she was able to return to her old self again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53 ✭✭Beebox

The story is based on the novel by Dianna Wynne-Jones, who also wrote the Chrestomnci series.
Here's a link to the story of the book http://www.nausicaa.net/miyazaki/howl/story.html

Howl's Moving Castle will (presumably) be released in Region 1 before it is released here. Obviously this causes a Region problemfor people wanting to buy the American release. Here's how to oversome it:

Search Google (or whatever) for a program called VLC Player. It's a small program that will play pretty much anything you throw at it - and that includes DVDs coded for other regions. This will NOT change the region setting on your DVD-ROM or anything else. Myself and all my friends have this and there is quite literally no problem whatsoever with any aspect of it.

It's available for Windows and Mac OS X, along with lot sof other OS's. Get downloading! Even if you only have dial-up it shouldn't take all that long to download. It's only a few Mbs!

UGC are not releasing this movie in Dublin. This is so disappointing! I was really looking forward to seeing this movie on the big screen. Anyone know if its being released anywhere else in Dublin?

  • Subscribers Posts: 9,716 ✭✭✭CuLT

I'm sure I can arrange to have it screened in DCU's theatre building, T101, for the Anime & Manga Society.

    I'll look into it.

UGC are not releasing this movie in Dublin.

They removed it about a week ago... ugh... wtf...

They must be having problems showing it here?

I sent the IFI a little message, see what the situation with them is.

    Yeah, I saw that too.

    Very odd.

EDIT: OK, now UGC have now added it to their listings page here and it's on track for this Friday. You can even book for it online. Hopefully this isn't getting my hopes up...

The print showing in UGC is the dubbed version but the version in the screen cinma is apparently the subtitled version. I only got to see the dubbed version in the UGC. Must admit I was a bit disappointed...... (But, saying that, this is going to get me killed I'd say: Spirited away wasn't my fave... Not even Mononoke. Porco Rosso's my fave by a long shot, followed by Totoro). Thought it was just missing something. I thought the voice acting was only OK (Although the Witch Of The Waste and Howl himself were great). I must check out the subtitled version. Much prefer them anyway..... Oh, the dog thing and Pumpkinhead are great.... Checkout the pumpkinhead/totoro/catbus head :)

I went to see this movie on Friday night and have to say I was impressed. I saw the english dubbed version in UGC. Christian Bale really did a good job voice acting for Howl. I'll definately be adding this to my DVD collection!

Oh hey, yeah, I thought it was good alright. Just maybe my hopes were too high. Like you said, Bale was very good in it (Esp after bathroom's cleaned. Say no more :) ) And that dog thing. The eyes. Haha. I just don't like dubs...... I mean dubbed films!!! :) And yer right, definitely one for the collection (Out in Japan with english subs 16th Nov)

Must admit, I was amazed and delighted to see how well it seems to be doing. I went last night (Sunday) and the cinema was full.... Cool

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,585 ✭✭✭honru

Yeah, Christ, it finally came out. Saw it Friday mornin'.

Thought it was brilliant. Most complex Studio Ghibli film I've seen to date. Of course, the animation is supurb, and the (dubbed) voice acting is probably the best I've heard in a Miyazaki film (Billy Crystal as Calcifer was perfect). The only downside was that the plot was a little weak.

Saying that, it wouldn't be the best SG film (still prefer Castle in the Sky) but definetly not my least favourite. Definetly worth seeing.

    4/5 from me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,894 ✭✭✭evad_lhorg

saw this on friday. loved it tbh. thuoght it was great. calcifer was excellent.

the film had some very funny moments. calcifer was just funny in general but the bit
where howl's hair turns red and then black and he was like "life isnt worth living if im not beautiful
    classic stuff.

the bit at the end was what made me go "ehhhh did i miss something?"
when turnip head turned into the prince it was just weird. out of nowhere "im the prince that has been missing. im goin to end the war"...... wtf? whered he come from?

Yeh, that kinda got me too...
and she was his 'true love' and yet she ran off with Howl... confuzzling

But still... highly enjoyable... money well spent

Yeah, I agree. That did seem to come out of nowhere.

It's great that it seems to be doing well. It's even got a fairly wide release (around Dublin at least) in cinemas that usually only feature mainstream films.

anybody see the subtitled version? Wonder does it change the story much? Like bits of mononoke: The US version has directly translated subs for when watching in Japanese rather than just the hard-of-hearing subs english transcript we got here.
Maybe it explains a bit more about the above comments about turniphead. Thought calcifer was good too but the dog thingy's my fave bit...... I just didn't like Sophie's voices is my mail complaint

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,071 ✭✭✭Art_Wolf

Caught this in the Screen subtitled.. must say it was nice.. but that was all :/

Coming to the end it just felt like it was dragging its heals - started to feel the mins go by.

Still nice animation, story line and script - just nothing that grabbed my attention as wow.

*shrugs* maybe was expecting too much from studio ghibli :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 454 ✭✭CrazyTalk

Saw the subtitled version last night, lovely film.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 616 ✭✭✭LucyBliss

I really enjoyed this film. It was the dubbed version but I won't lie - as a Christian Bale fan, I was happy with that. Though I wouldn't mind seeing the subtitled version.

I've read the book (it'd be nice if Diana Wynne Jones was getting half the kudos JK Rowling gets - I'm not a Rowling hater or anything but she's not the only fantasy writer for kids and adults out there despite what the media seems to think) and the deviation from the book plot wasn't that bad. There weren't too many at the screening I went to, just me and about eight others including a family with three young kids. I have to say there wasn't a sound out of the kids for the whole film. They seemed pretty engrossed. In fact, it was the Dad who made the most noise between rustling in his bag for munchies and having a whispered conference with his voice at one point about something or other. She didn't seem to pay him much notice though so he shut up again.

This is going on my DVD wishlist.

Really enjoyed this movie, the sceen where they first meet and go for a "walk" had the weirdest affect on me. Felt like a little kid watching it. Can't remember the last time that I got so engrossed in a film. two thumbs up!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭Hugh Hefner

Oh yes, that little walk at the beginning was enchanting.

Okay so I was dying to see this film as had I only heard good things about the previous works (I've been meaning to buy Spirited Away for months now). I loved this film. It was so fantastic and the voices were lovely (well, not the old woman's, I didn't like her voice). At the end, and this is the first time this has happened to me in a cinema, I almost shed a few tears when
you see the castle flying through the air
. But, knowing I was in a theatre and about to go into Domino, I held it back. Calcifer (spelling taken from IMDb) was great and I liked Howl's human dimension as apposed to making him just an "all powerful" wizard who is never afraid, etc.

Usually I prefer subtitles but I think this is the exception to the rule. Christian Bale is the man and not having subtitles let me enjoy it just that bit more. For a film with such great visuals I think subtitles would have spoiled it a little.

    5/5

It was nice to watch, but I have to say I wasn't overally impressed, I mean it's miazaki so like it's nice and all, but I much preferred Spirited away , nausica and Mononoke Hime

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,221 ✭✭✭RichyX

Saw it in Galway at the weekend.
Don't think it's doing great business there as was only myself and my girlfriend plus another couple there to see the 6.50 showing.

    Thought it was very good.
Probably my least favorite Miyazaki film yet but I've loved eveything else I've seen so that's no insult.
Even my anime vigin girlfriend enjoyed it. She had been expecting so stupid Japanese kids film or something but came away wanting to see more :)
Dub was quality I have to say. Bale was good and was surprised by how well Billy Crystal did.

Whole thing made up for me missing the showing of Spirited Away at the Kerry Film Festival.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,287 ✭✭✭joe_chicken

    Really good...
Not as good as Spirited Away...
    A bit too long...
Billy Crystal was very good... probably the best thing hes ever done
I prefer dubbed animation... i hate dubbed actors though

    (p.s.in a rush)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37 Johnny_Trotter

I watched it last week myself, only 7 people (including myself and two friends) at the 8.20 showing in Screen.

I liked it, but I only liked moments, compared to enjoying all of Spirited Away. HMC didn't seem to have the same balance between telling the story and showing the animation, which I felt that there was in Spirited Away.

I saw Howl's Moving Castle a week after it came out. There was a very good turnup at CineWorld in Dublin. Thought it was brillant. Am a very big fan of Miyazaki, but still think Spirited Away is much better.

Yeah, it was brilliant, I saw it with subtitles by accident, It was cool, but it kind of distracts from all the fantastic visuals.
