Is it Ashtanga yoga that you practise/ teach? If it is, where do you teach? I used to do it in England but found that courses are scarce and priced way out of my range in Dublin!

Aye I was fairly certain it was you Dominic!

Glad all seems to be well with you anyhows, Crunch is still too close and convenient for me to leave - but it's changed a lot over 10 years. Still they leave me be in the free weights room and the cardio kit is grand.

    JAK - Andy.

Hey Andy also thought it was you also!

Everything is well with me - my own business now. Its a shame about crunch in UCD as from my experience it used to have a great training atmosphere.

    Hope all is well

Don't work out of any gyms just with clients outdoors but have some big projects coming up over the next few months.

p.s. peter k - you missed the point its not about ab workouts its about stepping away from the pc and telly enough to workout regularly. No excuses just do it and do it regualarly. Also if you were getting paid to help people get in shape wouldn't you think its important to look your best (though that cannot be said of most trainers - the kind that charge €30 per session - as in other post on personal training).

I like this board and there are some good ideas passed regularly so keep up all the good work as there really are NO secrets to training other than believe that your body is the only one you have so each day choose to kill it slowly or fill it full of energy and strength. All the best

i get the point of your post and i dont have the problem of not getting away form the pc and i dont watch tv i usually run about 6 -12k (time dependant)depending on my free time between 2 and 6 times a week i also do free weights pull ups and other exercises i eat more or less no fried food except for maybe 1 pack of chrisps a week other wise ill have at least 1 salad a day always have either a bowl of Fruit and fibre or a bowl of all bran for my breakfast and 3-6 pieces of fruit throughout the day ive gone from 18 stone to around 12 and a half to 13 stone in the past 2 years i have no abs and can in no way get them defined thats why im asking how you have them i know what your trying to prove and i think ive proved through personal experience it works.
So any advice you have for ab work would be greatly appreciated.

    Pete,
Don't forget, you need to get your body fat down to around 6-7% before any abs will come through. There are weighing scales you can get that show your body fat levels. Argos have some reasonably priced ones.
    Whats your height?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,278 ✭✭✭peterk19

Hmm might look into that, Im just under 6ft

Yes and those scales are normally very inaccurate!!

Get a calipers and use any on line web site to check your scores. Just today i had a client who i have personally tested at 22% Body fat (female client), she tested at 30.3% on one of the scales in westwood!!!!

Please they are junk - pinching it with your own hand and looking in the mirror gives a better reflection.

peterk19 - keep on keeping on, mix up your training all the time and ensure you are following a GI diet so your insulin levels are not so high all the time (increased levels can cause more fat to be deposited in the abdominal region). Other than that it just takes time

who here trains in cruch in ucd? jak, transform do you?

I dont recognise the guy in the photo anyway. Im there most week nite around 8-10. Ever train at that time? There arent too many big lifters in there so id surely recognise you jak. (i remember reading that your big b4 i think)

Re BF - theres a digital calipers on BB.com that im tinking about getting. Would you recommend them Transform? Just need a second opinion.
any other time i got it done with the calipers the guy took 4 pinches - hip, bicep, tricep and back. How could you do it yourself if you've to pinch your back? Or are there other methods?

I took delivery of a calipers this morning from www.mysupplementstore.co.uk

    It cost £11.99 + £2.87 postage = £14.86 GBP

Delivery took 10 working days (from Jersey).

It's cheaply built (plastic) but seems to do the job (it gives consistent readings). It's endorced (spelling?) by the World Natual Bodybuilding Federation if that counts for anything and claims accurcay to "1.1% of underwater weighing standards"

Stapled to the invoice was a Haribo jelly sweet (big) and a hand drawn smily face ":)" with the words "Packed by Debbie". Which I found amusing.

Aye I train there - aside from Saturday mornings - my times vary between 4pm to 7pm for a start depending on how busy I am during the week in work. Varied split of mon wed fri sat or mon tue thurs sat.

Don't really know how to describe myself, I generally wear all black I suppose.

V Big guy with dark hair about 30? If so i think i mite know u 2 see. id never be in ucd before 7 but some times a big guy like above comes in late ish around 9.
Dont wanna give 2 much away but im a ginger and train in ucd mon to fri 7.30 to 10. mostly on track and field these days but three times a week in the gym for an hour or more.

Are there many big lifters i ucd cas ive yet to see them?? There was one eastern european there for a while that reminded me of mariusz a lot but other than that the biggest bench ive seen is about 140 from an 18st guy. Not exactly setting the world on fire is ucd gym tbh. But its cheap, local and they never stop you liftin or throwing big wieghts around so it'll do me fine

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,643 ✭✭✭Jak

Yah that could be me - I rarely am still in the gym at 9 though, mostly get out before 8pm. But dark hair and currently about 16st 7. Heaviest was around 17st 7lb but that's too heavy for my current sports and certainly for summer in my view. There comes a point when the necessary weight to get heavier lifts just isn't really worth it in the grand scheme of things.

As for big lifters, well there were 4 of us that I know of who benched over 200kg. Myself and an Irish american guy who is a bit out of training at the moment with college work were at about 202.5kg. Possibly he was doing more at his peak - but we would both be out of cycle for that type of lift now.

Then my brother (who has left the gym a year or so ago) and another guy from the country (who I believe is injured now) were both closer to the 230kg mark. Both very impressive lifters on form and pretty much the best I had seen in the gym.

There were also a few friends who trained who hit around 150/160kg.

Currently are there any big lifters? I don't really know, there are a few big folk who train there but I never see them on bench day. At the moment my bench routine is gone to a staggered endurance format, which means lighter weight. Couple this with the fact my training partner is on holiday for 2 more weeks and today I didn't even go over 150kg as I was alone.

In terms of a 1rm now - probably 180kg - and 190kg if I spent a few weeks prepping back toward that style of lifting. Most of my training at the moment is nothing too crazy or heavy - just a lot of volume and variation - which I will stick with through the summer. Winter is the time for power in my view - short evenings and nothing better to do :)

    JAK.

I have one, and I must agree that accurate is not a word I'd use with it.

Numerous reasons for the inaccuracy spring to mind. The two most important one's in my mind are: 1) The huge variation in body water during any normal day will mess around with the figure, I've seen it vary over 5% in one day... 2) The formulae used are the usual one size fits all approach. I'm not going to go into it, but I don't think any of us is going to disagree with the fact that people the same height are not going to be "of the same build".

I could see some merit in them being used with a certain amount of control to watch for variations in body fat percentage, ie testing in the same conditions at the same time of day etc (not very practical really).

The above being just my opinion of course.

Still, I can use it as an electronic scales so not totally useless ;)

6-7%?? My bodyfat is about 11% (15 on those weighing scales things - i can't see how they could possibly be accurate!) and with a couple of weeks solid ab work i have a great 6 pack, going to bodyfat that low isn't necessary i think but maybe its just me..
