OK, not sure if I know how to post images but here goes...

    Pigeons__jpg.jpg

I used to have a summer job and a crazy guy there from Cork used to believe that pigeons were pure evil and that they would attack your kids etc.

just after a crop had been harvested he would put 2 or 3 big round hay bales together, hide himself and his shotgun in the middle of them and just pick off the pigeons in the field around one by one as they were all looking for the grain that had been dropped after the harvest

    nice guy though!

don't care for 'em much myself but not really into the killing of them

but is it OK to shoot these and not the "cute" birds...? maybe they are evil....

anyway, now for that steak sandwich...mmm..

    Where's the difference?
You don't need to do either, it's purely for enjoyment.
(I used to hunt, I'm now a veggie).

    But to keep on-topic...

tbh I was just, maybe subconsciously, trying to give Indy some tips hidden in this anti-killing birds thread,
...if he can find some hay bales in Texas...

We were potshotting crows in the distance, the wee birds are too small to hit!

Was fun. I like shooting! Steak here is really good, you get the top sirloin steaks here that are too big to fit on a normal frying pan and weight nearly a pound each.....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,095 ✭✭✭Chick

Freakishly large steaks? Oh my God it just gets worse and worse...!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,461 ✭✭✭DrIndy

Yeah! I tried to eat one, but ended up having to save some for sandwiches the next day - indeed quite a bit of it!

The local Irish Bar in Brownsville has the "Big Irish" burger which is 1 pound in weight. If you manage to finish it, then you get a free dessert and an accolade. No one has managed to finish it to date......

    mmmmmm.... meaty goodness...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

Most people who shoot birds eat the birds they shoot. They don't shoot robins and tits and pigeons. I know a guy who hunts and he eats everything he kills (provided it isn't riddled with an infection).

yeah, but I want my own shotgun so I can shoot stuff on my own. I would never be a threat or rob anyone and its unfair that I cannot own one in ireland. No one would dare break into my house if I had one. Christopher keeps a loaded shotgun beside his bed. This was wise because 2 guys tried to break into his house. As soon as they heard the shotgun being cocked, they scattered. Christopher let them go and didn't shoot them. "I leave the light on for them if they ever want to come back".

I'd feel a lot safer keeping a shotgun in my house.

Whats cool about texas is if you get a "destructive device permit", you are entitled to purchase grenades and bazookas. You can also own artillery and your own tank with a fully functional turret!

Would love to have a go at the birds nesting with a tank shell!

I could go look up some of the stats about gun deaths in the States per capita compared to other countries with more stringent gun control laws, but i'm too tired...

not quite, christopher is sitting behind me as I am typing and adding a few points.

I'm hungover as hell. Been on the beer for two days straight and tonight will be a bender as well. I am getting a tour with christopher of his dads factory later today and then getting lunch.

I have developed a real taste for Tacos. Love them!

I meant in Ireland no one shoots robins and pigeons. Pigeon as a dish does not equal pigeon as we no it. Just like the ducks we eat does not equal the ducks in the park.

I don't agree with having guns at home. Self defense is not an argument, Ireland does not have crime like America has crime. In any case, the stats speak for themselves, countries that have very lax gun laws have more gun related deaths. America is no better than Iraq or Bosnia in this case.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,382 ✭✭✭snorlax

i think they shoot sparrows in meath and other forms of game. but i think it's more common in other countries though then in ireland.

It's difficult for me to say where I stand on this issue. Yes I value human life over other animals. Yes I value mega-fauna life over micro-fauna. Yes I value fauna over flora. WHy? I don't know, I just do.

I don't like the idea of hunting for fun. I'm certainly not a vegatarian. I don't agree with any type of cruelty. I don't like the concept of killing animals for pleasure. Killing animals humanely, causing said animal to go into the unconcious state as quickly as possible.

Why I don't have a problem with Beef production etc. Cattle are domesticaed animals. They are farmed. They are fed well, kept safe from disease, kept in good safe environments. They are slaugtered quickly. Their deaths doesn't have negative ecological repurcussions.

Why I have a problem with bush meat. Chimpanzees/gorillas are wild animals. They are not domesticated. They are not farmed. They live separetly from humans. When killed, they are hunted. Chased, shot, stabbed to death. They die in suffering. Their deaths have severe ecological repurssions.

I don't support or condone any type of whaling. Fishing for non endangered, critical fish I do support.

I thought Moby made a good point on being a vegan in his 'A Day in the Life' article in the Sunday Times:
As a vegan, I have this belief that if you're confronted with two choices and one choice creates suffering, it makes sense to choose the one that doesn't. Unless I was starving to death, I wouldn't look a cow in the eye and say: "My hunger is more important than your suffering."
Saying that though, there is no way Id be a vegetarian, let alone a vegan!

    EDIT: forgot the pic:

Eh..what? Yes you can, I have like three..
I could go look up some of the stats about gun deaths in the States per capita compared to other countries with more stringent gun control laws, but i'm too tired...
Same..and snorlax did it in another thread - fair play snorlax!
Why I don't have a problem with Beef production etc. Cattle are domesticaed animals. They are farmed. They are fed well, kept safe from disease, kept in good safe environments. They are slaugtered quickly. Their deaths doesn't have negative ecological repurcussions.
Hmm..again, being tired I can't give a great argument, but:

1)Slaughtered quickly..hmm, I don't really agree with that. In THEORY, they're meant to be, but the bolt gun thingy doesn't always work as intended. Trust me, I used to laugh at vegetarians until I saw the inside of a slaughterhouse..It was pretty upsetting tbh.
2)Ecological repercussions..overfarming of land, parasite lifecycles being perpetuated through slurry spreading, etc etc..there are plenty of counterarguments to that, just don't ask me now, I'm tired.

RE: veganism..I don't see the point. Health reasons; yes, there are many benefits to cutting dairy products from your diet. But coming from Meath and seeing dairy cows and the like - there's no humane reason to be vegan (apart from non-free-range eggs that is). The cows are happy, they're treated well, so are the sheep/hens etc.

RE: gun control..Indy, I refer you to Snorlax's citation of the statistics that show that most guns people keep for "self defense" are actually used against them..

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,487 ✭✭✭Kevin_rc_ie

No, There isn't. I'm talking about ecological repercussions due to slaugtering of farmed cows not the farming of cow.

In other words, it make little difference if the cows die from natural causes or from being slaughterd and turned into beef steaks.

Oh right, my bad. Although, the antibiotics/steroids argument still stands in that case.

but remember the Dodo was wipped out by extinction (and some beautiful varieties of the tigers are on their way out, and all done by one man (x many) felt it okay to pull the trigger and that one life was inconsequential.

i dont know if birds or tarantulas could be dubbed parasites, spiders help the ecological balance by eatting all the flies( eg there's more flies then there is spiders). i think it would be horrendous in ireland if every joe soap got a gun and just started shooting anything that moved or any particular animal they disliked.. we all know what happens on bonfire night to any straying cats or dogs...therefore what would happen if these same people had a gun/ and would you actually feel safer with a loaded gun under your pillow?

its probably more likely to blow your own head off if it's using live ammo and is not on safety.

    what's your point?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,382 ✭✭✭snorlax

that although shooting one bird may seem inconsequental, that that mind set has lead to many an extinction of animals eg the dodo, the tiger, the tasmanian devil, the irish wolf.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

What? You're comparing both farmed meat and restricted hunting to unrestricted crazy hunting? Bit like comparing a boxing match to a bar room brawl.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,487 ✭✭✭Kevin_rc_ie

    he has a point.

oops, i didnt read pets post properly i thought he was saying that shooting helped remove parasites etc, but pet was actually talking about the effect of cows on the environment etc

kev i like you sig but what does it mean?

Oh, dear, i've just realised the 'i'm female and chose a bird name' cringe....actually, i was listening to a band called Cuckoo the day i registered.

Pet, with you on the free range eggs.

Ecological repercusions of rearing cattle: all that methane...but, i still like beef burgers (from organic beef, when i can find it).

I suppose a lot of it comes down to what we were talking in about whatever thread it was that turned into a walmart discussion - we like cheap prices for our food and don't like to look too closely at where the food comes from. But, there are places (eg farmers markets, independent butchers and the food co-op on Pearse St on Saturdays) that bypass the mega food industry.

There's a thread somewhere over on the Pet forum where ppl are discussing their pet tarantulas - i guess i'm just a little disturbed by killing for 'sport' and not for 'food'.

edited to add: it's a forum for discussing household pets and animals, not a forum devoted to the trinners Pet...
