I am going to it. I think the dubs will win by 3 or 4 points.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,666 ✭✭✭Imposter

This is a close one. Meath have had a good league campaign and seem to be getting it together again. Dublin rolled over Longford but that doesn't really tell us how good they are. I'll go for Meath but only just.

I am going and I also Think Dublin by 4 or 5

1-15 to 14 ..you heard it here first.

What do you expect the team to be for the meath game ?

Same as longford ? ... I see reason to the madness of playing cullen at centre forward, it gives a defencive quality to the forwards that other counties like Armagh naturally have

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,307 ✭✭✭cruiserweight

I can see this game being close and exciting! I had initially thought Meath would win it but now with Trevor Giles being injured I can see it being an even closer game which I cannot call!

It does not matter anyway, as whoever wins this game will be knocked out by Wexford :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,598 ✭✭✭Yavvy

Giles is crap, he hasnt been up to scratch in 2 years. Meath wont miss him

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 631 ✭✭✭andrewie

Giles has been playing great of late. He played brilliant during the league campaign and got injured in the league final. we;ll miss him but I still think we have what it takes to beat the dubs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,307 ✭✭✭cruiserweight

Giles is a player who is very experienced and has seen and done it all! In a tight game like I expect the game on Sunday to be a calm head and experience are invaluable! For example if Meath had a free to win or draw the game I would rather somebody with that was calm and experienced! It is Meath not just Giles that have not been up to scratch in the last couple of years, and as such he has not had a chance to shine, but, is a very talented footballer!

Dublin are unchanged from the team which defeated Longford

    Dublin:
    S Cluxton, P Griffin, P Christie, S O'Shaughnessy; P Casey, B Cahill, C Goggins, C Whelan, S Ryan; C Moran, A Brogan, B Cullen; J Sherlock, C Keaney, T Quinn.

Hard to know whether that is the real team or not. Might be, or it might be a case of we'll just issue the same team and therefore there will be less discussion about it.

Shane Ryan is doubtful after pulling his hammy playing for his club in a championship game 10 days ago. Mark Vaughan is also pushing hard for a place, though I'd personally keep him in reserve for the moment. The only change I'd make is to replace Goggins with Senan Connell (with Moran moving to wing back).

Its difficult to call, especially as its 3 years since our last game. Meath are confident they have the forwards to beat the Dubs. They'll have a lot of good fielders around the middle of the park to obtain possession, so there's going to be a big onus on Whelan and Ryan/Homan to be competitive.

Do you think I will get tickets on the day at Croker? GAA site says tickets will be on sale outside but ticketmaster says no tickets left.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,414 ✭✭✭✭Trojan

Go down to the portacabin near the north circular/ballybock junction - should be some on sale there - ticketmaster won't list them. Go early though, this should be at least close to a sell-out.

Hard to call - don't know what Meath will be like - we'll see how it goes. I'll go 60-40 Dubs to win due to their scoring prowess 2 weeks ago.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,832 ✭✭✭Waylander

Meath have 5 championship debutants, I just can't see them getting the better of Dublin this time round. As regards tickets I do not think that the GAA are expecting a sell out for this match so you should be fine to get them on the day of the match. I would not leave it too close to throw in time just in case though. Also just heard that Trevor Giles is out injured.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,598 ✭✭✭Yavvy

There will be loads of tickets available the council is expecting one of the worst turn outs from Meath Dublin game in many years, this is due to the lack of interest from Meath fans apperently - tickets will be on sale at the usual locations on the the day

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,307 ✭✭✭cruiserweight

    The Meath team will be

    D Gallagher; M O'Reilly, K Reilly, N McKeigue, D Crimmins, D Fay, C King; A Moyles, N Crawford; N Kelly, P Byrne, S Bray; J Sheridan, G Geraghty, B Farrell.

I work in Automatic Amusements on Dorset st, we let the GAA use the space out the front of our work place for the ticket office. It's just across the road from the red parrott. As a result I have 4 tickets for Sundays game :)

I think that Dublin will do it - Meath have 5 championship debutants playing.

Croke park is a fairly daunting place to play a game, especially with the lads on the Hill! It won't just be a physical game but also a psychological affair!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,610 ✭✭✭dbnavan

I am proud dub living in Meath and will be on hill tomorrow, meath people in general are very quiet about the game, no buzz about it at all in town today, i reckon dubs will romp by 5 or 6 points.

    Raised on songs and stories...............

could be a long summer yet lads

If it lasts two victories longer than tomorrow I'll be happy :D

Sure I'd love to see Dublin win the All-Ireland, but let's not get carried away. One step at a time :p

Not a great match in terms of quality at all. Meath were terrible in the 2nd half and Dublin were just a bit better.

Even though dublin are through they will win nowt. Wexford should beat them.

LOL Typical Dubs, win 2 games and all of a sudden there are world beaters!

have to say it was a good first half but meath were unluckly in the 2nd. the forward line was cat. how many chances were wasted. nd meath, it was like they only had one forward, gerathy, but he was playin some football, what a point with his left from the right corner. was the meath goal over the line, i havnt seen the replays yet.

Yeah, fancy fans talking up their team, what a cheek. Dublin were the better team by some distance today, but that is the best I have seen Graham Geraghty play in years. Best player on the pitch for alot of the game, and I hate saying that. Saw some of the Wexford game before too, and they struggled to beat Carlow so I cannot see how anyone can predict they will put an end to Dublins run on that performance. Also very impressed with O Shaughnessy at left back for Dublin. He just got better and better as the match progressed. My only real problem with Dublin was that in the second half, for all their possession they could not pull away from Meath. They should really have won by a bit more then two points.

well infairness your not proving him wrong with Jank.

As for the game I cant discribe how good it feels to beat Meath when your on the hill. I live for moments like that. Dublin where were ther better team and if it wasnt for some panicky finishing in the second half and some easy wides Dublin could have made that win more impressive than it was. O Shaughnessy was fantastic as where most of the dublin defence.

the forward line is far from a finished article but IMO wexfords defence is worse than Meaths so we should have the ability to contain Forde and move on to the final. (please please let it be the lillys )

Hats off to All at Croke park for a great day including Meath who showed more heart than they have in a while and look to be coming out of a bad spell, The meath Supporters who were few in numbers but really got behind their team and Carlow and Wexford ... Carlow were unlucky they couldnt keep 15 men on the pitch ...who knows what would have happened.

But The Dubs are Through and I think we can win our next game... but once again its going to be tight ! ...

after watching the sunday game Im amazed Whelo stayed on, in saying that..poor Jayo got a Thump before the game started too.... and during the game both teams gave as good as they got, as one reporter said in the indo today its great to see a game without players faking injuries and fowls, giving and taking as good as they get.

    Great match, better result.

yeah i was just saying that on another thread. he was just battering everyone. how many dublin guys did he floor? scored a few too.

As a Cavan man, I didn't mind who won yesterday - in my opinion, one crowd are as bad as the other! Joking aside though, Dublin were good. Ciaran Whelan had his best Championship game in two years and Brogan was immense.

Saying that, I thought man of the match should of went to Barry Cahill. What a display, his goal line save was every bit as important as Brogan's goal, they have a great picture of it in today's Indo. He scored a great point at the start of the second half to even things up as well.

Dublin would of been well ahead were it not for Quinn's dreadful free taking. He missed a few form play as well. I'd say Vaughan will start the next game. Heard Quinn was good in the league but he wasn't at the races at all yesterday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,598 ✭✭✭Yavvy

I was amazed he got booked for shirt bulling but got away with a few nasty ones... I guess its for persistant fouling ? still he had a great first half

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,598 ✭✭✭Yavvy

I can see Vaughan starting the next game but usually mossy is much better that that and IMO a better outfield player than MV but the big stage is here..who knows

Well I hope for the fans' sake that Dublin's curse of free taking isn't coming back to haunt them. Bring back Charlie Redmond I say!

The fella from Nobber, Bryan Farrell, was very good for Meath too. Forgot to mention him. Kicked a few nice points.

And I love the comments about containing Mattie Forde and thus stopping Wexford. The whole problem with Mattie Forde is that he's like Maurice Fitz was in his heyday - you can't contain him!

I thought goggins did a good job on geraghty yesterday,he's big, strong with plenty of pace i'd have him man mark forde where ever he goes.

That match was the football match i've seen this year and i now rank Dublin in my eyes as one of the Big three, 1. Kerry 2. Armagh 3. Dublin. That dublin Team will go a long way, Although i reckon Armagh would beat them, as for my beloved Kerry, Dublin V Kerry is always an old skool afair i am not too sure how it would go but Have we (kerry) got the hinger again this year, i personaly think we have, but their is a rumour that should sam stay at home again this year that Jack O Connor may depart he only signed up for a two yr tenure in the first place, I have no fear of Armagh as that will be a hammering for our negative northern nobjobs, but their will be no such hammering for the dubs i'm afraid, although i think the phyciological fear factor of kerry would prevail on the day.

    Regards netwhizkid

I still Think There are a few more teams above Dublins level at this stage.

    Laois havent performed yet...
    Mayo are still there..
derry and tyrone are looking good and wexford are Leauge finalists... Its way to early to think of the dubs as top 3 material

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,832 ✭✭✭Waylander

Neither Laois nor Tyrone have really performed since the season before last. I think these teams are a bit over rated in general. Not sure about Galway, will need to see a bit more of them. As for Mayo, I can't see them as a threat for Sam, although they are a good side and can take most teams in their day, I just think the beating they took in lsat years final has taken too much out of them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 500 ✭✭✭hawker

I thought Dublin should have beaten Meath by a lot more yesterday. Meath stuck with them in the first half but when the chips were down, Dublin showed they are the classier team...at the moment. I think the future for Meath is very bright. I was very impressed by some of their younger players yesterday. I'll give them two years to be challenging for major honours again.

Unfortunately, I believe Leinster football is the poor relation at the moment(I'm a Leinsterman). I note another poster would have Dublin the the 'top three'. Personally I wouldn't have them in my top five. The top three of Kerry, Armagh and Tyrone are a step ahead of everyone else. It's down to other counties to up their effort to catch them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,255 ✭✭✭✭Lemlin

Dublin would struggle to make the top three in Leinster if you ask me. They're a better team than Meath alright but it could be argued that Laois, Kildare and Wexford are better sides.

I'll wait to see them in another game or two before making up my opinion though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,832 ✭✭✭Waylander

I do not see how it could be argued that Kildare are a better side. They have hardly won a championship game since Micko departed. As for Laois they have not really impressed me all that much last year or this so far. I think the Dubs are as good as anyone in Leinster, but I do not think that they are good enough to go all the way. If we had a couple of more forwards who could take their points we could challenge. Having said that Keanet played well on Sunday, Brogan toook his goal very well, and we may even have found a dead ball kicker in the second half.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,255 ✭✭✭✭Lemlin

Kildare have already won two Championship matches this year and have beaten the Leinster champions, who defeated Dublin last year, so I think it could be easily argued that they are a better side than Dublin.

I do think Dublin are a good team but I won't rate them until I've seen them against top opposition. In the past, they've shown a lack of convinction in killing off teams. In truth, they should of beaten Meath by alot more than two points on Sunday.

Last year, they should of beaten Westmeath and the year before they had every chance to beat both Laois and Armagh but when they were ahead failed to land the killer blow.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,832 ✭✭✭Waylander

One of those Kildare victories was against a Wiclkow side at a low ebb, and they only won it by a point. The other oneagainst the Leinster champions was a very poor game, with two bad teams. I would not rate Kildare very highly at all. I think Dublins toughest match in Leinster will be the next one, and I think the Leinster champions will be the winner of that match. I agree that they do not have the killer instinct, and they should have won by more then two points, and that is definitely a worry, but it will be a worry against Kerry and Armagh and a couple of other teams, I do not think it will be a huge concern in Leinster.
