Ok, I have just done something to my shoulder and it hurts like hell.
I was reaching behind myself to lift a bag and something popped or cracked or something.
Basically its ok if I keep it in close to my chest but if I extend it out to the side or behind me at all I get a shooting pain inside the shoulder joint..
    Any ideas or treatments?

It sounds like you've partially dislocated your shoulder?

It could be a rotator cuff injury or any number of other things. You should see either a doctor or a physio. Unfortunately, you have to see a professional to get proper evaluation and treatment and doing it soon means that you recover quicker.....
