String Club

Just wondering if any of ye would be interested in a string club of sorts. Basically, €10 for a set of guitar strings and €25 for a set of bass strings is absurd, IMO, given the likes of www.webstrings.com and Thomann, etc. So who'd be into getting together and bulk buying strings from abroad to help disffuse the shipping costs?

i'd be in for it, consider €50 in the kitty

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 52 ✭✭charon

I'd probably be interested, how would it work?

  • Posts: 0 Kaleb Large Pint

we all put in a fixed amount, everyone gets cheap strings.

    Like that, i hope?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

Pretty much, I think someone ordering two sets would be a waste of time, so perhaps a minimum commitment might be in order.

  • Posts: 0 Kaleb Large Pint

well, if everyone put in €25, and we added it all up, bought eth strings, and divided it out amongst everyone, that'd be the business.

We don't have to buy a big batch of the same strings, there's no point in doing it unless everybody gets what they want and how many they want.

  • Posts: 0 Kaleb Large Pint

i didn't mean it like that, we just tot up an order, and order it in one go, that's what i meant.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

Ahhh yes, my bad. That's the idea alright.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 52 ✭✭charon

I meant how would we get the strings delivered to every address and how would we give the money to whoever is ordering them etc...

through the wonderful service provided by An post, obviously whoever organises it all gets a few packs free to compensate for the trouble.

Makes sense - sure we've all been doing that with mailorder companies for CDs etc. Throw in a big order and split the shipping, it makes it really worthwhile.

Beforehand we meet for beers, take the orders and arrange the money.
Then afterwards we meet for beers and distribute the loot.

wiould someone get a few cans for me in the offo then? being 16, i'm not usually allowed in bars! :)

    And perform the Dabhoys raid(tm)...

Yes, this idea intruigs me... Blue Steels for all.

I'd be up for this alright. Any idea which supplier/dealer we'd be dealing with? There's only a small selection of strings I use so I'd only get in on this if I can buy my preferred strings at a discount.

I like the idea. Perhaps we could bring instruments and microcubes to this beering session?

Though I could certainly do with a few packs of strings, would be very handy altogether. Assorted Ernie Ball 9s, 10, some bass strings, and probably a nice cache of strings for the incoming 7 stringage. I'd probably buy a quite a few, so I think it's a very good idea.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

But surely to buy in bulk we'd be best getting strings of the same type? Or is this purely a saving on shipping excercise?

I'm in anyway. Ernie Balls all the way. Balls to the floor if you will.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

Ernie Balls for example, are way cheaper on Thomann, so it's a matter for everyone to find the strings they want on the Thomann site, see what they can save and decide whether they're in or not.

I would be reluctant to order from the States initially cos whoever places the order is going to get hit with the tax the morning it comes in, unless this is taken into account and financed prior to the order going in.

Charon, only one person will place and receive the order, so it will involve a trip out of the virual world :)

The forthcoming Boardstock extravaganza might be a good place to do it, and leave plenty of time for everyone to get their **** together. I suggest everyone proposes a site to purchasefrom and have links to what they want. If everybody pulls there weight it should all go swimmingly.

I don't think a minimum order per person is really necessary. If you have 10 people buying strings from thomann (for example), you can split the shipping 10 ways. Cost of however many packets of strings you want + €2.30. It's still worth your while to buy one packet of Elixirs, and however many you get does not impact on anyone else anyway.

What's the first rule of String Club, Doc?

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

    It's actually only €2 a person :p

What's the first rule of String Club, Doc?

Rule number 1? Why, it's "Never forget Rule #3!"

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Rule #3 - Always wear eye protection when changing strings???

    That can't be right...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,254 ✭✭✭Citizen_Erased

Never mind eye protection I got a serious whip of an E string across my hand the last day. Put a big read line along my hand. What about people up here who need them posted?

Never forget the eh... 5th rule... of String Club, Feylya - if in doubt, always estimate pessimistically. Last time I made an order it was €23 euro to ship. Until I've actually been charged €20, I will assume the worst. :p

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Ah, well in that case we'll never see the strings cos whoever buys them will just run away with them :(

    :p

    ernie balls all the way

    for me, its

    these

    and

    these or these

but its still 26 ****ing euro for my bass strings.....wtf is the point, utter bastards.

Just jumped the gun and ordered 10 sets of Phospor Bronze .12's from Webstrings. Total charge was US$32.77 including postage. That works out at about €2.60 a pack including shipping, roughly 75% off what it costs me per pack of Martin PB 12's in town! Dirt cheap, I'll let you know how it all works out but at that price it might just be worth ordering what we need ourselves - Postage per set cost about 30c.

Just to let you know, they're out of stock on flatwounds...

what a coincidence, i ordered 5 packs of 9's and 5 packs of 11's off webstrings yesterday for a mere $30, nay too shabby.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

    I don't like webstrings

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,946 ✭✭✭BeardyGit

Why so John2? Quality, service etc? I'm going to A/B their phospor bronze against the Martins I use on my acoustic and to be honest at less than a quarter of the cost I'm prepared to compromise a tad - PB's last me a week at most so that's quite a saving over time.

I just don't like the sound or feel off them. Some people swear by them but I'd rather have Ernie Balls

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,848 ✭✭✭✭Doctor J

Webstrings are pretty crap tbh, but at that price I can handle it. However, if I was playing a gig or recording, I'd pay for a good string.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

So what's the craic with this thing? Is someone going to order whatever strings from Thomann then post them out to everyone?

    i'd be up for that

I was thinking I might order from Thomann for anyone in Galway who'd want strings. Would be handy, and cheaper than posting them off.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

That's the main thing I'd be wondering about. Someone in Galway would have to pay more to cover postage. Unless we all met up at a beers or something (Instrument Beers anyone?) and got the strings then or distributed the strings for easier posting.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Well, there is the aforementioned boardstock. We could exchange strings there.

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

True. Although, there's no date for Boardstock of yet.

satelittle link up from boardstock to the set of the teletubbies is the answer

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,034 ✭✭✭✭It wasn't me!

Heh. Speaking of blantantly underagedness, anyone want to lend me an ID for a week or so anytime soon?

Heh. Speaking of blantantly underagedness, anyone want to lend me an ID for a week or so anytime soon? Dark hair and a big nose, those are your prerequisites to look like me.

    Yup, got ya here.

Want to send me some form of ID? I need it to get into Weezer and Slayer. They're within a week of each other. I'd post it back after that.
