Eh, stupid automatic bike...

Finally got into the gym!! Go me and such. Got 40 mins of cardio in. Over my 30 min starting goal.

What scared me was that I did 30mins on the bike, but the bike was auto-adjusting the resistance in accordance to my heartbeat. This is bad because my pulse is higher than normal anyways due to my drugs, sub 100 at rest is good for me. (certain prescription drugs I'm on have boosted my heart rate by quite a bit).

So I did 30mins at 175-185bpm... Eh, except the resistance was feck all. I barely broke a sweat tbh.

I pushed at one point to 195, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea for me to take my bpm that high.

Opinions? Should I ignore my bpm and just push to a level that i'm comfortable with? Or is it dangerous to be pushing close to 200?

I personally go manual and move my resistance as i go along - I have a low heart rate usually hits 140 training when I push myself.

I'd go with what you are comfortable with.

I'm convinced that the HR monitors in our place don't work. Always reads 73, without fail when I'm doing my warm down.

I'd say gauge it yourself nesf, find a level that you're comfortable with. If you're taking medication, the only person who can really tell what would be advisable in terms of HR is your doctor. :)

Training with your pulse that high is probably inadvisable unless you have a very good fitness level.

If you train with your heart rate much above 170 you are not significantly developing your normal aerobic capacity. You are only developing your ability to exercise at high intensity. You canibilise muscle while doing this sort of training because your body cannot obtain energy fast enough from other sources.

If you are aiming to lose fat, then high volume, low intensity exercise is the most effective, with your heart rate around 140 at most.

If you are aiming to build up aerobic endurance, then training with your heart rate between 140-170 is generally recommended.

Google for more exact figures if interested. They vary according to age and sex and individual.

Yeah see the thing was, my pulse was at 180+ but my breathing and exertion rate were fine. I really did not feel like I was pushing myself....

My pulse is a bit odd because of the drugs I'm on, but 180+ for 30mins should have killed me (considering this is my first trip to the gym in 4 years...) but I felt fine, not even slightly tired afterwards.

Thats just not right. 180+ is insane, I should have collapsed...

Could have been just the monitor being way off. I'll prob just use manual the next day and just train at a comfortable exertion level, enough to have me sweating good but not enough to drain me. Although I do prefer to add in 5 minute sprints every 10km for variety. That gets my heart rate close to 200 according to the monitor.

That seriously can't be right. I mean, in my youth I've did some very serious intense training sessions, and I know what that feels like. This was no where close to that. Not even by a long shot.

I know nothing about your drugs. Maybe you should get a professional opinion.
It is a serious conseration. Pushing yourself too hard while training for the the first time in four years could cause you to blow a gasket, as Mr Brittas put it.
