Who's that Chinese Guy?!

I'm doing a part-time MSc in TCD at the moment and while on campus I noticed an old, hunched Chinese guy wandering around.

The funny thing is - he was there when I was an undergrad in the late 80's and he looks exactly the same! If anything, he looks a bit younger now, almost 20 years on. I remember at the time someone telling me that he was some kind of genius with umpteen degrees.

    Anyone know (of) him?

I remember him from the late 80's too (Nat Sci).
You had to say that - "nearly 20 years on"!

Mateo is his name. Understands a huge number of languages
I believe, though I never heard him speak.
I do remember reading notes from him over a coffee,
so maybe he was unable to speak. Seemed nice enough.

In my memory I associated him with Maitland Wolfe, the legal poet.

He's our very venerable, uber-multi-lingual, deaf and dumb, french raised of Japanese origin Matteo Matubara. A personal friend of the president (who wrote him while he was sick in hospital), the russian ambassador and numerous others. Gom knows a lot about him..

See this thread for much histroy and rumour on this funny little man.

he drinks bloody marys (honest to god, drank them with him on a night out somewhere). not the friendliest sometimes - watch out for his stick, but a very interesting guy to have a written conversation with.

He has hair - far as I recall (haven't been in since Hilary Term) he takes it off when he gets inside the Hist sometimes. But that might be a false memory...

Can't ya see it poking out from underneath it?

I've never really been that close to him, I only ever see him in the distance really. Recognise his little walk a mile off

    LOL

Where did you get that from? In norwegian, we never normally use the polite form "De" any more, just "du". Not entirely sure what your lover rabbits are supposedly eating.....

Hey! I wear a hat too..

Speaking of Matt though, he was at the security office when I was getting the music room key today, and one security guard was telling another to "bring him somewhere"..(ie in the help, assist way, not in the "You have the right to remain silent" way).

He has a good head of snow-white hair. I saw him around St. Vincent's Hospital a couple of times last year when I was in visiting. He was wearing slacks and a jumper, no sign of the big coat and hat, and looked very suave.

    d4-speak.

Next week you'll say it and she'll be like "nobody says that anymore, oh my gaawd, you're sooo giblish". Where giblish is the new word of the week..

Set the trends my friend.. don't follow them. Lets make up phrases she doesn't understand, cool is relative!

hahah, deadly, giblish is my new phrase.

Giblish - meaning uncool, not with it, not hip, but square. never round.

Let's take a moment to discuss the phonetics of giblish. Is it "g" as in "great" or as in "gibberish"?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

I'll go for the g sound of go

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,135 ✭✭✭✭John

    or git

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,523 ✭✭✭ApeXaviour

When I was thinking of it (though I had no idea it would take off), the g had a j sound. Like giblet, but not.

Well I think it works better with a hard g. Sounds less like giblet/gibberish then, and is hence less confusing.

You should see the t-shirt I'm wearing, it's a lilac-purple colour. Totally giblish.

I have a lot of slang that I picked up on my travels, that no one ever understands, but they get the message from the context. Some of the Scottish phrases are priceless! Rab C. Nesbitt!

Great pic, LOL. Just wondering if that was really taken at the Ball tho? Didn't think people would be so blatantly drinking from cans... And how the hell did he get in?!

he's a fellow, he cant be banned,
and yes it is at the Ball, i saw him there, and he wouldnt let me take his picture...

    i wonder where he lives?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,452 ✭✭✭Time Magazine

It was definitely at the Ball. My friends and I were proud as punch of Matt after him 'making an effort' for the Ball - he had a new hat and runners on.

Am told by Hist'ians that he lives in a homeless shelter on the quays.

could we not raise money to get him a place in trinity?

I actually had an idea... a great master plan that will not only help Matt, but also creately help the PR of the TCD SU.

Step #1: In the first Council next year, propose a motion to make Matt a member of the Student's Union.

Step #2: Enter him in the race for SU President.

Step #3: Brand anyone who runs against him a racist ageist bastard who picks on people with disabilities.

Step #4: Introduce Matt to his new apartment on Front Square and his new office space.

Step #5: Convince Matt to spend his E10,000 on a golf buggy to facilitate his movement across campus.

I think it's a great idea that would not only be a great publicity stunt for TCD (imagine the headlines in the Herald), but it would also liven up campaign season. I for one would love to see a Matt for SU President poster....

    Will anyone support me?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,487 ✭✭✭Kevin_rc_ie

he can't become a member of the su without being a student...........or can he?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 437 ✭✭Sleazus

An SU Constitutional amendment is only a majority vote away. I think we could do it...

Just think of the merchandising contracts...

    No.

Dude, what planet are you on? The guy is mentally unwell. You're obviously just interested in the novelty and entertainment values of staging what would be little more than a thinly-disguised freak-show. This would help neither Matt or the SU.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,198 ✭✭✭✭Crash

Because the SU is such a strong political body anyhow.....right....

anyhow, i dont think we'll be getting into my rant of the many things wrong with the SU today :D
