Did anyone watch the Eurovision? I just got through watching it and the voting that goes on is just ridiculous. I was glad to see Ireland give the UK 8 points which is not like me at all! The Eastern European countries just stick together too much. If ever there was an argument for the return of the U.S.S.R., truly this is it!

ah your funny! :D It's so true though!! It's should be re-named Eastern Europeanvision (..oh and Israel can come too!) ;)

Complete farce. We did it too. Our votes for the UK was because they were near us and we wernt in it. Last time we were there they gave us points. TBH the whole public televoting thing is outdated. Bring back the panel I say.

Also, I despise Loius Walsh, but for once I agree with him. We need more profesional singers and better song writers.

See it's not about the song anymore but the whole package, looks, stage presence, dancing blah blah..

If you put the McCauls (remember them??) up against that greek girl, even if she was singing 'baa baa black sheep' she'd still get in before them!!

Greece won , which means hot chick/good song can still win ....the easterners like quality :)

(also explains why we didnt get past the semis ..on both counts..)

To be fair, the Malta singer wasnt a great stage show/looks etc. it was a good entry, and came 2nd. Likewise with Israel (though she was stunning).

The best song/show won, and as Ive already posted in the television forum, Helena is so hot! I know what ill be doing later  ;) .

Dana, yeah I know...it wasn't as if English isn't her native language! lol

Oh I do like the Greek Song. That and the Norweigan one was good. I think some of the others that got high marks shouldn't have as they were sh1t. UK should have gotten more. Javine was better than most.

well Iceland didn't get through the semi's either. So the 3 of the countries will be in the semi's again next year!!!

Being from the UK I love this show for one reason (other than letting me catch up on recorded stuff rather than sitting watching it) I love the political voting, I have yet to work out the point in it, if something is good then let it be known. As for the crap over how to score it, simple, get a panel of judges from non competition states, ie the ones that dont get through. Who cant care less. That or get foreign judges.

I'm sorry but she is wearing WAYYY to many clothes for me to be interested in her - she needs to shed a few items of clothing before I'd be that impressed with her.

All of them would be a start ;)

It's crap if your country isn't in it. The best bit is the voting part and if you're country isn't in it it's pointless really watchin it unless you decide to root for another country...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,640 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

I can't see Ireland winning this contest any time soon. It seems like RTE are deliberately trying to sabotage our chances of having a decent entry with the You're A Star competition and as long as Irish people keep watching the show, RTE are getting richer from this policy! And in the unlikely event we do get a decent song together, unless they revert back to the panel system we will lose due to tactical voting! It all seemed so simple during the nineties. Those were the days...

I say ourselves, the UK, France and a few others threaten to boycott next years competition and set up our own unless they scrap public voting as this ensures we'll never win. We need to fight the Eastern European bloc! ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,659 ✭✭✭Shabadu

The whole 'You're a Star' debacle has just proven what we've all known for years. The general public are stoopid.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,117 ✭✭✭Gazza22

I didn't actually sit down a watch it but listened to some of it while on the computer.

The Eurovision is just going out of fashion now and yeah that block voting it ridiculous but as it has been said, if the four provinces of Ireland was split into countries, we would support each other without a doubt.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,451 ✭✭✭embraer170

I can’t see where all the criticism comes from.
A rather good show this year, the standard was a lot better than last. A lot of heart put in by the Ukraine (president came on at the end).

There was an amount of block voting but Greece is proof that if you have a good song and a good singer, you can win it regardless.

A funny exchange I heard this evening:
X: Malta is proof that weight doesn’t matter
Y: Maybe she’d have won it if she wasn’t fat.

My favourite was Switzerland, pity they didn’t maintain the early lead.

trying to find the results on the web. Be interesting to see how many Eastern countries are in the top 10!!!

Aren't we forgetting that most people probably prefer a song in a langague that they could understand. And the languages you are most likley to understand are from neighbouring countries.

I'd say Greece are proof that if you get a good looking girl in skimpy clothes and average pop crap as the song you will be loved internationally. We need to find an Irish singer who is slutty enough to bypass the block voting. Who could we get though?

Also, I think the fact that no country finished on zero proves that there is too much favouritism being shown.

I agree with Shabadu on the You're A Star competition.

ah there's loadsa them around just go into any nightclub in town and pick someone willing to flash their tits!

I think Eurovision is about average pop song. And I think that Greece was a good song for Eurovision.

Malta (2nd) is proof of the total opposite.

But how far behind were Malta? I would have welcomed a Malta win as it would have been a bit different but it seems these days you need to be a good looking girl wearing a tight fitting outfit. Didn't Ukraine win last year due to those women looking like Xena Warrior Princess?

I think next year we should have a traditional Irish song with hot women wearing Celtic battle gear. It's our best chance!

RTE making tons of profit on kids voting for acts on "Your a Spa" .

Block voting and the fact we send some kids means RTÉ never has to get the award of hosting the thing by winning it.

Did anybody see the Germans vote giving. The square behind him in hamburg was packed. Cant imagaine the same thing happening in Dublin.

Hah some poetic justice can be drawn for this, the four countries who automatically qualify because they have the bigger money contributions ended up at the bottom. the big four were not so big tonight. Time to scrap the automatic qualifying for these four countries.

Although I lost out on my bet on Norway, Im not too disappointed with the result. At least its out of the Eastern Block for a change next year.

think ireland should try their hand at this

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 328 ✭✭Tiffany

Greece was a sh!t song, Romania or Malta much more deserved a win.

Romania won the semi-final, and Moldova came second. Pity that wasn't the result of the final!

I can't believe Ireland gave 12 points to the Latvian song, and it came 5th! It was the worst performance of the night, they were so out of tune.

And you know what's ironic? Eurovision has become so much of a circus act that one circus act doesn't really stand out from 90% of other countries' circus acts anymore. That's why there were 3 ballads in the Top 5; Malta, Israel and Latvia. Malta was the best proof that you don't need a slutty woman or a mad circus act to do well, because she came second!

i do wish they would scrap the phone voting, stupid money making scam! and bring back the jurys. scrap your a star and bring back the national song contest! this is a serious compitation and we used to be the best at it!(are we still the country that won the most?) we just treat it as a joke now as thats all RTE do ..treat it like a joke, they get money and keep ray D'arcy out of the rte building for a long time

Let the Eastern Europeans enjoy their little block-voting cartel! One day when the Irony Curtain falls they too will realise the whole competition is just a farce.

Aren't we forgetting that most people probably prefer a song in a langague that they could understand. And the languages you are most likley to understand are from neighbouring countries.

Most of the songs were in English i thought.. so that theory does not matter.. only a few actually sang in their own language. France being one... look how many votes they got :D

Greece did have a crap song but it was catchy and she was hot.. of course she won.. myself i liked the Swiss entry :D but i was rooting for Noway.. 80's rock .. yeah!!!!

As for Ireland giving 12 points to latvia?? Why not? Who was doing the televoting?? Young girls/women of course and Irish girls love their boy bands. 2 blond guys singing like westlife.. Of course they get the vote..

Stupid televoting... funny thing is when the jurys were doing it.. everyone thought that was unfair and wanted a public vote. :D

I don't understand why Greece won. The song was bad! I hated it! And Helena and Javine looked very alike.
During the whole voting I was just hoping that this stupid Greece won't won, but...well.
And this Balkan-connection is annoying. It was pretty easy to guess who gets points by who.
But I liked the fact that Germany was a total loser, our song by Gracia sucked and I hope that they'll realize that we don't need such boring pseudo-rock songs.
Moldova and Norway were great, btw. I wanted Moldova to win ^_^

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,389 ✭✭✭✭Saruman

Its not just the baltic states that do political voting!! Look at all the scandanavian countries including iceland!! Denmark, Norway, Sweden etc...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 185 ✭✭Feenikusu

Yep, and Cyprus - Greece, Spain - Andorra (btw, was this andorrian presenter speaking spanish or french?), UK - Ireland, and usually Austria - Switzerland, Germany - Turkey, Belgium - Netherlands...
But how can you manage it so that this can't happen? I wouldn't like having a jury. The song most europeans like should win, not the song the jury likes best.

The voting patern is West v East now. Look at the countries who did worst - France, Germany, UK, Spain, Sweden.

Ireland, Belgium Italy, Portugal did'nt even qualify. Only Denmark and Norwegians did halfway okay.

I was amused at the PC voting amoung the Balkan states. They all love each other now.

    Mike.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 35,524 ✭✭✭✭Gordon

Only saw the last half of the songs and I thought the Greek entry was the best song as far as performance and songwriting went. There were some entries that could have been good songs if produced for a single and not played live like Frances but that is the sign of a sh*t song I guess.

On one hand I'm happy that Greece won because it was a good song unlike many other previous Eurovisions. On the other hand over here in Greece we're going to be hearing that f*cking song everywhere. I was going insane from last years Greek entry Sakis Rouvas that came third so I can't imagine how bad it will be with a winner. Oh there you go, a car just drove by blasting the song out there..
