So I was watching this first episode of star trek:tng this morning.
In it Riker has to go get Data in the holodeck for an away mission.
Wesley Crusher is also into the holodeck and falls in some water.
But when wesley leaves the holodeck he's still wet :?
A bit of an oversight perhaps

Definitely an oversight. Anything else that a holodeck user has tried to remove from the holodeck vanishes instantly when they left.

I suppose it's possible they tied in replicator into the holodeck to make all the water. ;)

    maybe he wet himself

remember when wesley and some kid were playing in the holodeck, and when the door opened for picard he got hit in the face by a snowball.

Star trek writers just don't care.

Perhaps things in the holodeck like food and water are replicated instead of fake. After all, we also see people eating and drinking in the holodeck. Why would you eat and drink fake food?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,727 ✭✭✭✭Sherifu

    I might buy this.
They mention Wesleys holodeck exploits in the review.
I'm not sure about the replicating idea tbh, when the holodeck program would end there would be a load of replicated ****e left lying around.

    They can "de-replicate" it :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,592 ✭✭✭Ro: maaan!

It was said at some point that the holodeck does use replicators or something similar aswell as "photons and forcefields". I'd say food and suff is replicated...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,727 ✭✭✭✭Sherifu

In one episode Picard clearly states that no, holodeck objects cannot exist off the holodeck, but then, in the very first episode of the entire series, Wesley Crusher remains wet after falling into a brook on the holodeck after he leaves the holodeck. So maybe only holographic water can exist off the holodeck…
Doesn't holodeck objects include replicated stuff?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,921 ✭✭✭✭Pigman II

Perhaps because it was real snow/water? Don't forget that when the characters played Sherlock Holmes etc they wore 'real' costume that existed outside the holodeck as well as inside. They didn't have 'holographic' costumes which presumably the system could have facilitated?

Have you nothing better to do with your time?
Your not helping you "Unban me!" campaign much by creating multiple accounts and continuing to do the same thing you got banned for in the first place.

Anyhoo - back to the topic. Wesley crusher, any mention of what became of him in the Star Trek timeline while the rest of the characters were busy at their splorin'?

Alright fair enough its me.....One question Jim. How do I get to the moderators about what happened my other account? I couldn't even pm on it. Some people can't take a few jokes (that were directed at nobody, only poking fun at star trek) and i suddenly got a full ban unable to pm and all. I need to find out who banned me and why?

    Post on Prison.
You've already done that, but, you did it last night at 1am. The Admins aren't on 24hours a day ffs, give it time.

Thanks for that Jim, and let GoneShootin know I'm back....and he ain't gettin the last laugh....Bye for now.

    They don't, do they?

SatanInside, no-one's responded to you because of some temporary technical glitches. You've been banned cos you and your mate came on and acted the tosser, and then you failed to learn and attempted to register twice more before posting in Prison.

Your best bet is to register under a non-obvious nick and keep a very low profile. Even then the admins might spot you.

Goneshootin has nothing to do with it.

Didn't he discover he had magical powers of some sort with the help of "The Traveller" and go off to develop said powers?

the holo-projectors can project outside the door , while its open, so snowball could have happened but should dissapear when the door closes..

as for Wesley...he should have dried out when he walked away....

i would say food is replaced, but nothing else....

Then why does Wesley say to captain Picard "I'll get a towel" if its just going to disappear when the doors close?

Ok i have the Next gen tech manual, TOS tech manual and all the nitpickers guides ;P

yes it was a plot oversite plain and simple .

I was going to post a big long technical explaintion of why it is impossable but no one has asked for it and i'm busy at work.

if you want one let me know and i'll see what technobabble i can come up with ;P

Why is it a problem? just accept that large holodeck have a built in replicator that can create real thing's like paper water snow etc and simulates large objects like buildings, cities, ships, people etc its not beyond federation technology so there’s no problem.

We've also seen the "de-replicator" in Voyager when Janeway asks Chakotay to "recycle" something.

Holographic people definitely can't walk off the holodeck as you can't replicate a person. But I imagine water and snow would be easier to replicate than to simulate. Imagine the effort required to get the sensation of water soaking into your clothes just right when using holographic technology as opposed to replicator technology.

I don't think Quark would be happy to hear that seeing as how he makes a fortune from some of the more "adult" holoprograms :) They must be doing something right!

Yeah I was thinking that myself. Maybe they replicate the "important bits". God wouldn't that be a nightmare if the dereplicator facility malfunctioned

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,258 ✭✭✭MrVestek

Ok people as much as I love Star Trek it's fiction... it doesn't have a logical explaination. This has been debated over and over again and aint gonna resolved any time soon.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,727 ✭✭✭✭Sherifu

    Yes sir Mr. Officer.
Nothing to see here, move along folks, no talking allowed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,885 ✭✭✭Stabshauptmann

The way I picked it up was at the begining of TNG it was explained that the holodeck was a technological advancement built on the same principals as the replicator and transporter.

This was later shafted and replaced with the the idea of ligh, energy, photons and force fields.

That the writes decided to change this is a good thing, they shouldnt be lambasted for inconsistancy but rather applauded for having the good sense not to cling to a flawed idea.

And BTW, they actually do care about why and how things work. That was the brilliance of Star Trek, there were reasons and consistancy, even if every problem could be solved by rerouting power through the main deflector dish :)
