And just to confirm, we're all good with not using spoiler tags to discuss 1x23, right? Remember, speculating is OK, but concrete spoilers for 24 & 25 will have to go elsewhere. Best bet is to avoid this thread until after you've seen it from about 3am tonight onwards.

I could watch it in the morning (working 4pm-midnight tomorrow), but have chosen to keep it for when I get home cos I want to amp up the anticipation and watch it late so I'll be more spooked by any horror moments we might get. (I'll never forget watching the pilot last May about 2am when we knew nothing about the show, and I was traumatised by the pilot in the tree and several other "Yikes!" moments in those first 40 minutes. Plus the eerieness of the then French Woman's transmission.)

    5 Really Good Clips
    "RUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUN"
    Cotains SPOILERS for tonights episode
Rosseau tells everyone that the others are coming, and Jack plans to blow open the hatch with explosives from the Black Rock with help from Rosseau and hide everyone inside it. Thats what I thought was going to happen ever since they found the hatch. Doubt it will be go to plan though. Also looks like the raft isnt setting sail untill Part 2 despite last weeks preview. And Artz is as good as dead. Actually it seems kind of too obvious hes gonna die, so he might live.

Even with just that stuff happening and no surprises, should be a great episode. And then theres the flashback about the day of the crash too. Cant wait.

Yeah.. posted them already in the main forum... Clip No 5 is particularly excellent!
Don't think Artz is as good as dead... quite like his character and just cos he was running from the monster does not signify an impending death for his character!

But my God.. how i jumped when i heard the growl in Clip 5....

    ok....what an episode.....

1x23 is a grat example of why Lost is such a great series. The writers just have their timing down to perfection and it sets us up for a great finale.

This episode gave us prove that we have become tightly attached to the main characters and there were some deeply moving scenes (especially jack/sawyer) along side the minor action points - however my 'cousin' seems to have sent me a copy with a rouge parachutist that seemed to off-track the sound.

Some very quick and direct answers to some of the mysteries from earlier episodes and the 'Black Rock' being a ship was totally unexpected. Jacks meeting with another 'tail' located passenger underlines the fact that there are other passengers alive (I'm sure everyone noticed the relevance of the seat numbers). In fact there could be a chance that the black smoke is for them and not our survivors - a small chance but the birth of Claire's baby does point that they are coming for it.

The info about the 'monster' was interesting - still don't know what it is but now we know it's guarding something - but what?

    Roll on next week!!

Crap... i saw another copy of the tape i'm recieving with PROPER on it... should have accepted that instead! Is it really bad?

Only viewed the first 2 paragraphs of your post cos the major plotlines are always revealed in the longest paragraph! :D

Oh, and by the way.. no real need for spoilers but cheers for the consideration!

yeah the black rock being a ship took me completely by surprise. I was certain it was some magnetic substance like lodestone that was throwing off the compasses. Of course they just show us the ship for a few seconds, teasing us, gits >_< absolutely slavering for the next episode.
Yes i have a feeling we'll be seeing the seat 42 passenger later on, those seat numbers weren't very subtle, it'd have been much cooler if she just briefly flashed her ticket with a small 42f in the corner (:
Interesting how locke said to keep still, is the monster's vision triggered by motion? Would that explain how locke survived seeing it the first time? While frozen in awe the monster just passed him by?
Was kinda hoping walt would have another psychic moment when jack held him while saying goodbye, oh well :(

Monster by motion -> now you're on to something. I would said that is very valid and makes sense - but what is it.

What did you go and put that as thread title for, some of us havn't seen this episode yet. There is a seperate thread for episode 23 that has spoilers in it. There is one thing about putting spoilers in a thread but putting them in the title of the thread is another thing. Could you edit this please, so at least other people won't see it.

Damn... didn't see this until now...

For god's sake... some people haven't seen the episode (thank christ I didn't see it until now...)

Locke, I'm going to merge this into the episode 23 thread but if you post something like this again that ruins a twist or any part of the episode without clearly putting that it's a spoiler in the topic then I'm going to have to ban you from here...

Have a bit of consideration for people who haven't seen it and have a little common sense when posting.

Also there's already a topic for discussion of episode 23 so please don't go creating threads that already have a home...

    Excellent, excellent episode...
The Black Rock is the ship?!?!?!?!?!? Did NOT see that one coming. What a twist, and what a reveal... master camera-work at it's best...

Michael giving Shannon Vincent and Jin and Sun's scene together were truly moving....

    I like Arzt...
Him and Hurley play off each other nicely... nearly cacked myself laughing when Hurley couldn't pronounce his name... Also I couldn't really make it out, is his name Leslie Arzt? If so there's a guy whose parent's hated him...

Excellent set up for next week too... I simply cannot wait...
Danielle mentioned the monster was a security system... wonder what this can mean and what part it'll play on the revelation of what it actually is...

Anyway, it's sad to think that this time next week Lost will be over... and we'll have an entire Summer to go without it :(

    Excellent episode! Really good.
Felt a bit weepy a number of times as we got some really moving scenes - particularly Sawyer/Jack and Sun/Jin. Oh and Walt giving Vincent to Shannon. So many nice "awwww" moments and all excellently acted.

As to the Black Rock - what a great idea. All of us, I assume thought of it literally - a large lump of rock with some weird properties. How nifty to have it as an old ship... with what meaning? Argh!

And a security system - intruiging but how does Rosseau know this for sure?

Anyway else feel all fuzzy as well when Michael, Walt, Jin, and Sawyer sailed off? The swelling music, everybody waving - really moving.

On one hand I want next week's episode right now, yet on the otherhand I want to wait because - once I've seen it - that's it for months. Anyone else feel this weird conflict?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,509 ✭✭✭ElNino

This was a good episode but it was somewhat anticlimatic as things were being teed up for the big double header finale next week. The start would have been good with Rousseau suddenly appearing to warn them about the others coming if it hadn't been spoiled here already I guess the others will arrive next week.

The boat being launched at the end of the episode also sets thing up for next weekl. I have to say the boat in the water was very sorry looking and I wouldn't have gone out on a lake on it never mind on the ocean

They also tied up a lot of the back stories by showing flashbacks for Michael, Walt, Kate, Sawyer, Jack, Sun, Jin, Shannon, Boon, & Sayid, all showing what they they were doing right before they got on the plane. What Shannon did to Sayid was nasty I am surprised that he hasn't mentioned it since.

There were some nice emotional scenes too with Sawyer telling Jack about what his father said, Sun and Jin reconciling and Walt giving his dog to Shannon to help her get over Boon.

It was also nice to see some of the other survivors for a change.

I can't wait until next week to see how it all ends up. Although I wouldn't be surprised if there are some big cliffhangers carried over into next season.

Just had a quick look at the poll results, I can't wait to get home and see it. Was there any problems with the playback of the file? I think someone mentioned that it was out of sync.

I'm downloading another one from work, I just hope its different to the one that I downloaded at home.

Just watching the ep now.. flicked forward near the end. Mine has some synching problems.

The "package" was delivered by the group LOL.. apparently, no problems with any package by the group TCM.

    "Exodus - Part One"

    Another amazing episode!!
Loved all the sly references made in the airport scene that reflect events in the future, such as Shannon suggesting there will never be a day when she'll appreciated what Boone has done for her and Shannon presumably getting Sayid in trouble (i'm sure we'll see what comes of that next week).

Episode was excellent in that it told us some essential information regarding character backstories, such as why Sawyer was on the plane and more of the story with Kate and the toy plane.

Artz is an excellent character... funny and interesting. Loved his quip about continuing with the group into the jungle: "I wanted to go until i heard Milan lost his friggin' arm!". I was expecting Sayid to go with them into the jungle.. felt a bit strange when he wasn't!

Didn't really like Michelle Rodriguez character.. too forward in asking Jack questions but that may be due to nerves from flying etc. Seated in the back of the plane... not much hope of her become a series regular next year unless we see more flashbacks!

So.. the Black Rock was in fact a ship... who'd have thunk it?! Can't wait to see more of that next week!

    Quite a sad episode also:
    - Sawyer finally revealing the truth to Jack about his father's feelings towards him
    - Kate not getting to say goodbye to Sawyer
    - Jin and Sun finally settled their grievances
    - Walt leaving Vincent behind
    - Michael's awkwardness on whether to hug Sun or not
    - Sawyer's and Charlie's wry smile to each other after having practically a full season of petty squabbles - see "you hit like a ponce!" incident! :D

Overall.. an excellent episode! We learned a lot in that episode. Some excellent information on character's backstories and some quite sad moments. Not having a lot of action in it actually benefited it, in that we know next week will be action-packed (judging from the promo anyways)!

Gota agree with ixoy's comments too.. can't wait for next week but a whole Summer with no 'Lost'..... :(.... September better hurry up!

    Righto - "Exodus, Part I" -

Thought this was just excellent - 10/10 - best episode since ep 19, and one of the best of the season overall.

I thought this was well on its way to being SERIES finale stuff, as opposed to just Season Finale, when you consider how many character moments there were, how the plot returned to 'the beginning' (the pilot of the series) in so many ways. Given the absolutely atrocious Enterprise series finale last week, I couldn't help thinking how *right* they had gotten the elements of this season finale, or how appropriate most of those scenes would have been had it been the Lost series finale. Too late for the Enterprise writers to take note, but this is how you should end a series/season.

    Some episode notes:

    * Michael/Walt scene at the start - I was sure this was going to be their episode, with Parts II and III reserved for the collective cast. Glad it turned out to be all three parts with the full cast flashbacks. Those we didn't see this week should be covered next week.

    * Rosseau - After 16 years, she seems convinced *she* can hide from 'the others'... yet she doesn't know how many there are or much else about them. She had also never seen the hatch. I thought she might at least have a clue.

    * The Others turned up one week after Rosseau's baby was born. 40 days have now passed (biblical connection intentional, says Lindelof) and Claire's baby was born a week ago... But how did Rosseau know that a week had passed? Was her turning up just coincidental? She can't have known about Claire's baby, surely...?

    * Impressive shot of the smoke cinematography-wise. Rose pretty high very quickly, though, but I suppose the gang were all looking the other way. Raft original aborted launch and later launch proper were also beautifully directed. (Though you can see the camera boat just after Vincent jumps in the water. It's on the right-hand side of the screen. Pretty shoddy to leave that there, though I didn't notice it first time around.)

    * The Black Rock - impressive revelation. It bugged me over and over during the episode why the Black Rock seemed to be such an abundant source of explosives... especially considering you'd have to refine chemicals to get dynamite. But, of course, now it all makes complete sense. Black Rock was also an impressive set-piece for a show that's $500,000 over budget per ep.

    * Strong character moments: so many of these - loved them all. Jack/Sawyer, Sawyer cutting the trunk for the mast, even though it wasn't his fault, Sawyer looking for Kate, and vice-versa, Walt and Shannon, Jin and Sun, even Vincent jumping in the water...

Strong resonance with Jin and Sun having the airport scene in more troubled times(under the surface anyway) and with their later reconciliation. I was hoping Sun would tell that stupid woman where to stick her snide comments.

Also small touches like Shannon helping out with the raft launch. This is a girl who was sunbathing when everyone else was working to survive 40 days ago. The contrast of Shannon taking Vincent warmly versus the flashback scene that followed was incredible. The Sawyer/Jack scene had the same power - showing how these people have been affected by their shared experience.

    * Beautiful new instrumental for the raft launch scene.

    * Hurley didn't see the numbers... yet. We're told this is to happen. Can't wait to see his reaction.

    * If I'm understanding the plan right, it doesn't quite make sense. Does Jack and Co want to blow the hatch open on the basis that the group might then hide inside? All well and good, except you've got a giant hole blown away at the entrance. They'd surely not be able to seal the entrance well again, even if only a small hole was blown. Since they've got the whole thing excavated, you can't even hide it again well. Locke seems to be going along with this plan, despite my assumption (up until now) that he had been *inside* the hatch during the missing hours after Boone's accident.

    * Jack's flashback with Michelle Rodriguez... Interesting to see the numbers crop up, though a tad obvious now we're looking out for them. I wonder who was in seats/rows 4, 8, 15, 16... or what the connection there is. Shannon and Boone could be in 15/16 as we saw them when Charlie went to the toilet and they didn't seem to be in first class. (Boone says they couldn't get that anyway.)

I think we will see Rodriguez's character again... and I do think she could yet be a full-time character. She's likely one of the 'We're the survivors' from the tail section.

    * Arzt - like him a lot. Funny like Hurley, but in a different league. "You want to keep a secret? Don't tell the fat guy" and also the classic - Jack: "I thought you wanted to help." Artz: "Yeah, I wanted to help, but that was before Montand lost his frickin' arm."

    * Interesting line - Locke: "Where'd you get the scratches?" Rosseau: "A bush." Locke: "Mean bush."

    * Locke had no message for anyone back home...

    * Kate & the Marshal - so she did leave the plane behind (and it wasn't just dodgy second unit work in the last ep) and she did go to great lengths to get it back (even killing her accomplice.) I think this is very odd motivation on her part, considering all the trinket is is a reminder of Tom.

    * Sawyer's arrest - not the best explanation in the world, but we know he was deported now. Hurley must know his real name - James Ford - as this would've been what was on the plane ticket and also on the manifest.

    * Locke and the monster - "Keep still..." Was this his secret? Interesting new addition to what he might've seen and how he survived anyway.

Can't wait for next week... I'm expecting this radar/flare to come close to success, but fail at the last minute. Seemed like a strange addition. No mention of a radio from either the plane or the repaired tranceiver. Maybe they weren't fixable, but a line might've helped to confirm that.

Don't think that shot is of a boat - looks a lot like the seaweed covered rocks that are all along the beach.
There are a few issues I have with the appearance of Danielle. She mentions that the others come the day after the smoke, yet the smoke hadn't appeared yet. She also mentions that her child was taken one week after the birth - it's been a week after Claire's baby - but she wouldn't have known about that. She is also more than vague about any of the questions that are asked. I feel she has a few secrets up her sleeve - maybe closer to the 'others' than we think. Of course she may be the 'others'

People seem to be forgetting that Claire had her baby out in the forest.. and remember Danielle did blow up her shelter. So, it seems pretty likely Danielle could be living about the forest (probably not the safest place to be though)... maybe even possibly just outside of perimeter of the beach. And if not, maybe Danielle was out hunting / taking a quiet stroll.... :D.... and heard Claire's shouting and screaming (or Kate's shouting and screaming for help at the start when Jin came).

I still think we'll just see an eye or foot this season.. they're gonna keep us hanging for a little longer til we see a better view of the monster.

Seems pretty likely alright.. can't wait for that big revelation of the others!

Here's something interesting for ye... these passages are from the Official ABC site under the episode synopsis for 'Exodus - Part One'.. they seem likely to be deleted scenes from it which will presumably be on the DVD come September. But the scenes (especially the very interesting scene 2) seem to be pretty damn pivotal to the story. Judging from the last scene (regarding Shannon's little bit of information to the airport police regarding Sayid), they'll possibly be in 'Exodus - Part 2'..

    (** SPOILERS **)
Charlie and Claire watch Rousseau from a distance and worry. Charlie does his best to comfort the girl he cares so much for, but it's an uphill battle. Claire tells Charlie that, when she escaped from Ethan -- however she got away -- she knew they would come back for her. Charlie realizes something. "Is that why you haven't named the baby?" Claire's eyes fill with tears, but remain firmly fixed on Rousseau. She nods her answer.

    [...]

Back at the beach, Claire asks Rousseau how she knows her. She can't place it, but she knows they have met before. But that's impossible, and Rousseau says as much. Claire tells her about Ethan kidnapping her, that she escaped, but she can't remember how. Rousseau ignores her and busies herself with the new hiking boots she has obviously liberated from the camp. Something seems to click inside Claire. "You saved me, didn't you? That's why I remember you, you saved me from him." Rousseau gives a quick look to Claire and then to the baby. "We have never met." And with that she walks away.

    [...]

We FLASHBACK to the Sydney airport and see Sayid considering that same necktie on a rack with many others. A woman is helping him decide. She asks him what he will be using it for. "I'm going to see a woman." Sayid asks her to pick it for him and she points him towards the yellow one. As she rings it up she asks the girl's name and Sayid can't help but smile when he tells her. "Nadia." And as he is lost in the emotion of finally seeing his love again, the airport police arrive and ask him if he left a bag unattended earlier. He tries to tell them that he asked someone (Shannon) to watch it for him, but they aren't hearing it and tell him he needs to come with them. "Of course I do."

Excellent points, havent got time to address them all. I think she might of gotten them from her son at some stage. And I thought it was good how Locke had no message for anyone back home, as he has noone back home.
Alex is a girl. It was one of the many things revealed this week.

I've been a bit behind on my Lost watching and only saw this episode tonight.

Haven't read many of the other posts so I won't risk repeating things but I thought it was a great episode. One of the best so far

The Sawyer Jack conversation, the multi flashbacks, the music at the launch (thanks for mp3s basquille) are some of the many highlights.

I had been thinking over the past few eps that they haven't really shown many of the other 30 odd survivors and that they seemed to come out of nowhere at
    the most recent funeral
but with the introduction of Arzt and the boat launch sequence they addressed the issue.

Although would anyone else like to see an episode with a whole other set of the survivors? Kind of like an in-series spinoff. Just one for a change of pace. Might be fun.

Overall I would nearly be ok with this being the last episode of the series :)

Also my first post on the Lost forum. Yeah for the Lost forum.

Don't think that shot is of a boat - looks a lot like the seaweed covered rocks that are all along the beach.

Now I look at it closer thanks to Basquille's picture, I think it might even be just a diver with a camera, as opposed to the camera boat they would've run alongside the raft during those scenes. But it's definitely a camera. Hope they copy and paste a bit of ocean over it before the DVD release...

Basquille - am impressed by the additional information from the ABC synopsis. we're very likely to see
that Sayid scene verbatim come this week's episode. I very much hope the Charlie/Claire/Rosseau stuff will be in Part II or III, though those scenes seem grounded with her arrival in Part I and unless she comes *back* to the beach, there's no way to fit them in continuity-wise. It also seems their timeliness has been lost a bit. You're right, though - crucial information or what?... Could this be an excerpt from the original script treatment which was later changed and pieces discarded? (Will have to go back on the other episodes, see if there's anything unusual in there.)

They are some pretty strong revelations concerning Claire's missing time, and feature a bug-bear for me - why Turnip Head hasn't been named... (after a WEEK!) My guess is Rosseau does make it back to the beach and these scenes or some very like them are included. Either that, or there's no scene with Rosseau and Claire, but the Charlie/Claire discussion of Rosseau is intact.
    Interesting stuff.

    Is it just me, or
do the scratchs on Danielle's arm look a LOT like the ones that were on Ethan's face?

Just noticed something after watching last nights episode. (I'm putting it in here cause it relates to something we find out later). Walt is reading a comic with a giant polar bear just before the Sawyer shoots the polar bear in the jungle. Another show of Walts bizarre power?

EDIT: Was walt reading this again before he was attacked by the polar bear in the jungle?

Didn't Rosseau also mention the bears though. When she had Sayid tied up in her shelter, one of her traps was set off and she went off to investigate saying it might be the bears again. It seemed to be a run of the mill thing for her though, not something new to the Island.
