Then feast your eyes on this

I played one of these in the Eggle factory, the thing is probably still ringing out the last note still ;)

A really, really fantastic guitar by any standard.

I got a SD '59 in the neck, a SD custom custom in the bridge (with coiltap toggle switch) and the old neck coiltap toggle switch is wired to be a killswitch. Both toggle switches are pickguard routed just under the bridge. Next up is some locking tuners and strap locks. Then possibly a new bridge because the G string bridge saddle rattles and kills sustain, its annoying the sh1t outta me. It'll be a lovely guitar when i'm finished with it i suspect.

I dont like the trem, i think it takes away from it TBH. I'd love that with a gibson style tune-o-matic.

Well the '59 doesnt have a four conducter cable so i couldnt coil tap it. I didnt want to leave the switch unused y'know. Im not sure the shop are wiring that for me actually. I might just do it myself if they dont.

Where did you get the saddle? Barry (guitar tech) told me I had to replace the whole bridge.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

i got it in mannys guitar shop on sunset boulevard in LA when i was over there...my cousin replaced it for me so i don't really know... didn't have to get a new bridge tho...it was a tuneomatic

Ad-lib in carlow. Can be a rip-off but i know the guys there and they always do me good deals. Like, its €129 for a SD '59 there (rip-off). They did all of the wiring/setup for €150 incl pickup. Not that bad I suppose since a lot of components/pots needed replacing and the wiring was complete sh1t.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

thats fair enough kinda cancels out the over charging on the pickup itself.... if i can't shift the ibanez might upgrade the pickups..let us know how u getn with them...when u gettin it back

I was never the biggest fan of SG's tbh, but this one is crying out to me to be fixed. Needs a new truss rod, something I believe I can do.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,691 ✭✭✭david

Tomorrow hopefully, I was supposed to collect it today but i had to work on short notice. I really do recommend Seymour Duncans though. I have another one (duncan custom) in my RG and its really really sweet. A lot tighter sound than the custom custom i got in the SG. But still, theyre both highe quality pickups. I really wanna try out a JB if i can find a guitar in some shop with one in the bridge.

Ugh, them Epi G400's arent that nice. Cheap construction, crap pickups and the small vintage scratchplate looks horrible IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

yeah the jb is something i've been looking into..was thinking about getting a hot rails or quarter pound set for the tele but i wanna get a strat instead of that so i dunno...i don't like epi sg fey i have to say really don't like em...u just wanna replace a truss rod thats all...crazy man

But they're all bolt ons. No no no, no more bolt ons for me. Wouldn't mind an Epiphone Ebony Custom though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

nah not for 100 euro (through neck that is)... ebony custom sg or lp???

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

    Set neck for €166

Ebony Les Paul. Damn nice guitars I think. Was gonna get one but I got the Ibanez instead. Although, $370

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

thats nice innit the set neck think companies put more effort into the les paul and strat copies than any other copy models they do tho... i like the black beauty epi lp thats gorgeous..of course the real thing or this one would be sweeter

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Don't like the Bigsby on the first one but the Black Beauty is nice. Couldn't justify that much on a guitar though.

    $240 however...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

yeah thats true way too much money you'd want to wipin your arse with fivers to justify gettin that...i like the bigsby i must say...the origianl black beauty is the nicest ...cracker that and the alpine white one are my 2 favourite gibsons... thats a serious guitar for 240 but i really cant stand sunbursts they just horrible man

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Amber then! Honestly, for $240, you can't really go wrong. Mr_Angry has one, an Al2800. Must inspect it properly one of these days.

yeah u can't say anything bad about that can u really mohogany is one of the best sounding woods i've played myself really nice ..my sg was that...thats a great gitar good find man

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Aye. Karl Hungus will crap himself when he see this most likely.

I think the next guitar in my collection will be a single cut. Shame the Tremonti SE is gone. Might think about getting my strat back into strat shape, put a fixed bridge on it, new single coils, respray it candy apple red. Of course, it's only a cheap Epiphone strat :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

i had a tremonti in one hand and my edr in the other...i'm regretting it for sure...prs don't make any other guitars i would want under a grand... that sounds good what you'd do with the strat but its a sin to have a fixed bridge on a strat imo... candy apple red with the mustang racing stripes on it in white would be nice

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Na, I wouldn't use the trem on a strat. I rarely use the floyd on my LTD and I don't miss a trem on the Ibanez. I reckon a nice rear routed Strat, with white EMG single coils or maybe some Fralins, silver hardware, maple fret board, maple neck... Mmmm.

    This is nice though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

no i love trem but i would have to have a guitar without it also like a tele ;)

yeah maple neck and fingerboard but with a white finish and for some reason gold hardware...

fralin high outputs(10db) or sd quarter pound flats

thats a great site some savage gear on that never heard of it before

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Yup. Must try and right down all these handy websites and post them in the sticky. Should edit the broken links too, now I'm a mod.

Ah, so much gear I'd love to buy if I'd the money. I'd love to buy a load of HB gear to see just how bad it is. My 7 string ain't great anyway...

played a bass of theirs...bout the same as an encore bass if you've ever played on.... yeah i'd get that jc120 off thomann and sz720 too

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Don't think I'd get the SZ720. I prefer the SZ520s look and inlays. Maybe some new pickups but it doesn't really need them.

Of course, I'd get a good rack set up...if I won the lotto

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

oh of course and a powerball...or if u did win the lotto a herbert or that 6 channel h&k

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

If I won the lotto, I'd have a house ot live in and a house that's a studio. Oh yes! Hmm, must do the lotto :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

that goes without sayin... a 100,000 quid rack thats ready to go at 4 in the mornin ****ing sweet.... back on planet earth i bought a crybaby and a ge-7 off punchdrunk...must give u a listen to the ds-1 wih the ge-7 eqing its ass...he stuck a hot potz II into the crybaby too..happy days

I had the DS-1 running through a Dan Electro Fish and Chips I bought from Fitz a good while back. Sounded lovely. Crunchy as hell.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

yeah thats the hope for the ge-7..i used to have a ge-7 after a metal zone and hole **** it was stunning...really powerful... don't know why people don't like that pedal

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

For the simple reason that people can't set up their equipment properly. You could hand someone a Powerball stack and a Gibson LP Custom and they couldn't get a decent tone. You could give someone else a plywood strat and a Microcube and they'd have an incredible tone from it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

yeah thats it i dunno why is that...like what stops people from gttin a good tone

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

    Bad ears.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

or bad taste in music...listen to the tones similar to what u wanna achieve and get gear thats gonna do that for ya ..thats how i do it anyway...like i got a metal zone that time cos i wanted a power rock sound..easy really

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

But doing that, people will go "Oooh, I want to sound like Slayer" and scoop all their mids out. They leave the bedroom and go play in a band situation, they get buried in the mix. Maybe it's just ignorance and not knowing that causes bad tone...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

yeah thats true i suppose its mad different in the bedroom and with the band ...really crazy stuff.... i think people just don't put effort into learning about stuff and it makes them accept whatever sound they get from a guitar and amp

  • Moderators, Music Moderators Posts: 23,363 Mod ✭✭✭✭feylya

Squire into a Marshall practice amp. Play Teen Spirits. "OMG, I CAN PLAT TEH GEETOR!!!11!!!!"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,968 ✭✭✭jcoote

around the dublin shops it come as you are..its like lads just go in to show their mates they can play that riff crazy ****ers....went into one one day and a bloke was trying out a lp and he played all of freebird on it..deadly stuff
