To have done the leaving, finished a year of college, dropped out, and gotten a job that pays 22k a year?

    At 17.

I wouldn't say it was usual. Not impossible or unheard of. Lucky 17 year old.

    Not Your Ornery Onager

What is the max salary in that job?

    Not your ornery onager

    Not really

no, in the mid nineties I completed the leaving went straight into a job that paid around €24K a year, give or take

now any call centre job, or sale related role could pay up to €25K depending on who it's with. Even McDonalds pays around €17.5K starting off.

It's government, public service so its liable to rise based on both time and promotion. So its not the same as say working in McDonalds or a cinema.

Yes, but I am 17, and as well as that have fit in a year of college! And then got this job.

I'd say you started school at a pretty young age... I started at 4, while I think most of the people I knew started school at age 5... then if you skip transition year... pretty easy to have finished your leaving by 16.

Most people I know started at 4

No idea what you are talking about, as I never will be a door to door sales man....?
My job in Statoil I was on €20K are you trying to show off?

No, I was asking if it was unusal to acheive all this by the age of 17.
    Aren't you just fabulous....

Probably more so then you, if you bothered to reply with such a pointless comment... :p

What's the point of this thread? Surely it would have been easier to just say I got a job that pays 8.38 an hour instead of fishing for compliments.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,010 ✭✭✭kasintahan

I earned 10K last year working 12 hours a week (min wage + commission)... the then company went *boom*

I thought the minimum acceptance age for 3rd level is 17? 22K is very little, especially if you live in dublin.

are you going on 18 soon

edit/ there are alot of jealous comments in this thread, go collect your dole begrudgers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 925 ✭✭✭David19

You'd easily make that as a builder.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,922 ✭✭✭Dave

Jealous of having a 9-5 job at 17 for the rest of your life? I doubt it somehow.

First of all I did not say anyone was jealous. Nor do I intend having this job forever.
You'd easily make that as a builder.

So? This isnt a thread looking for a job.
I thought the minimum acceptance age for 3rd level is 17? 22K is very little, especially if you live in dublin.

I dont live in Dublin. Being 17 I still live at home and the money goes solely towards whatever I want it too.

For **** sake I mean I only asked if it was unusual for someone my age to have finished school, year of college and a job at this pay.

I dont want everyones arsehole comment in the vein of "hey, lets shoot this guys kite down"

For the record, Im sure most of you hadnt acheived this at 17 in any case, and keep that in mind - Im 17.

So you started a thread asking are you special, and your suprised at the above responses.

Put on your glasses arsehole, and you'll actually see I asked is this unusual, I'm sorry you somehow saw "Am I special" in the title.

So? This isnt a thread looking for a job.

You asked if it was unusual. Some builders would make that starting off. Hence, its not that unusual. Its not common though.

    but a builder is a sh!t job

Thank you, thats one of the only replies I've gotten so far that actually answers my question, I really don't understand why everyone has to be such an arsehole about it, I already flippin know that anyone with a qualification gets much more, I simply asked if it was unusual for someone my age, not only about the job but a year of college too etc...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

    but a builder is a **** job

Well, depends what you into I suppose, I know some builders who love it! Difference here being though thats generally your career should you choose it, while my job here will prob be on a temp basis

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,010 ✭✭✭kasintahan

    You're right... to a point.

Most of us didn't have 22k jobs when we were 17. We were in uni instead, so that we can get 30-50k (or higher) jobs when we're 23 (depends on qualification).

*please not some of us (me) are still starting college... at age 24...*

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,922 ✭✭✭Dave

Ok so now you're asking is it unusual for a person to do one year of college, drop out and find a temporary job at the age of 17.

    No.

Man you'd have to be doing advanced science or Engineering or just something special to get 50k (or higher) at 23! (unless you started medicine at the tender age of 13 :p )

But it happens I guess! Anyway, I am going back to college, I dropped out because I absolutely despise the course I am currently doing....or was doing...

That's the basic average starting salary for the public service.
    You're neither special nor unusual.
Enjoy the job!! :D ... the private sector is more harsh and cut throat.

ahh there is the straw the breaks the camals back.

If you were living on your own then i would admit that i only know 2 people who have done something similar (though one of them is still in university).

but living at home? Heck i know loads of people aged 17 and 18 who have done what you have done. Then no its not unusual.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,517 ✭✭✭axer

Nope - not really unusual. I used to earn €500+ (after tax) a week as a supervisor in a call centre when i was 17 (was working there a long time, then went full time @ 17). Good few hours a week, but left it to goto college.

I just have to say something. Doing 1 year of college and then dropping out is not "achieving" anything. It's quite the opposite.

you are not unusual, very normal actually. god i know loads of people, who are earning away more than u at 17.
i know a guy who started djing a few nites a week at 16, earning alot of money for it too, now he works at a radio station earning alot more.

Uuuuh 13 ?? I've got a hanful of friends at RCSI that entered its 5 year program at the age of 17/18 and hence will be doctors at 22/23. First year salary at Beaumont = 50k. Then they do their USMLEs, transfer to an american hospital, suck it up for a few years --> six figures in no time. Go back to school, mate.

Tell you if what was worth it????

Im in a job that pays 22k a year, at 17, TEMPORARY.

Did I say i fucking sacrified my education for it??

No! I was just wondering how many people were in the same position.

So yes its fúcking worth it you gobshíte, as if I'm going to turn it down because I would have dropped out of college anyway.

I know its a basic pay job, but I'm not talking about my job here, again I have to point out that I was wondering if it was unusual/usual

I will save up to go back to college to do somethng I DO want to do.

And whoever said that Its no acheivement, did you flippin see me harking on that its great to have dropped out of college?

All I thought was that I've done a fair bit for someone my age.

Nothing else. So jesus will people actually see the question rather then shoot their mouths off in a rush to beat each other to the flaming.

Thanks to those who actually gave answers about how regular/irregular it is

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,698 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

    the flaming is the answer.

the fact that people are making fun of you = its no big deal. And you simply making matters worse by whinging and moaning at them for flaming. accept its no big deal and move on. let the thread die...

Get off your horse child, you haven't cured cancer... you started school early, you finished school early - you aren't an anomaly, you're the product of simple mathematics so, no, the accomplishment is nothing special whatsoever. However, you have done well by persevering after dropping out :), best of luck in your pursuit of a new course.

Dude, you just answered your own question. If you think most of us hadn't achieved that at the age of 17, then it IS unusual and you know it.

So guys, this IS just a bragging session.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 869 ✭✭✭goin'_to_the_PS

HE JUST WANTS TO KNOW IS THERE MANY OTHER PEOPLE OF SIMILAR AGE EARNING THIS AMOUNT, NOT BRAGGING (bragging on the internet not sure thats possible)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 364 ✭✭Paligulus

Hey guys. I just gave my girlfriend 23 consecutive orgasms. Is that unusual?!!!
    :):):)

Ah no, I'm only trying to rise you. I think people who live at home have less pressure on them to complete a college course. If you are living away from home then generally, you're parents have contributed a fair bit of money to that year so you can't really drop out.

Therefore you see a lot of people completing courses they absolutely despise. So....it probably worked out a lot better in the end for you (pressuming you go back to do a course you like)

And I suppose it is unusual enough...

I agree with Little Goose. Basically OP is in a temporary full time job at age 17 and is a college dropout. He has said
For the record, Im sure most of you hadnt acheived this at 17 in any case, and keep that in mind - Im 17.
No, I was asking if it was unusal to acheive all this by the age of 17.

To be honest, I'm not sure exactly what you have "achieved" ? You already said the dropping out of college part is irrelevant, so what you're referring to is being in a temporary full time job at age 17 as your great achievement? Get over yourself it's not that unusual.
