What do people think of these. They involve swinging a dumbbell from between your legs to over your head. The dumbbell is not pulled or pressed upwards, instead the hips/ass/legs/abs/back are used to generate momentum which causes the bell to swing upwards. I have just started doing them and they seem really good, I get a nice stretch in my lower back and they really get the heart pumping and I think they're good for developing explosive power. They are also very easy to do with very simple technique.

Sounds like a good way to put out your back tbh.

    I agree.

Although to be fair, a lot of free weight exercises can be dangerous if you aren't doing them right.

Totally agree - great exercise and you will be seeing more people doing these (badly probably though) in the future thanks to the russian training advice of pavel

Just do a google for Kettle Bell Training and check out Dragondoor.Pavels site.

Prob with kettlebells is shipping prices. I was looking at getting one from pullum sports before - best supplier of weightlifting equipment this side of the pond - and for a 60lbs kettlebell it would gost a couple of hundred I think!

I think the site is www.pullumsports.net if you wanna look at what they have.

In general when i hear/see a swinging motion i say that cant be right but this exercise is actually supposed to be that way so maybe its ok. ive never done it myself anyway but i have a comment...

Everytime i go to the gym i see guys doing dumbell curls (or something similiar) by moving their back and generating momemtum by swinging the weights up. I see it so often now im sick of it. A while ago a guy and his mates passed some smart comments about me doing 21s with a 50lbs db. Something like "i could curl that in my sleep". He proceeded to "swing" a 65lbs db up 10 times. I dunno why ppl think more weight is better when their technique is terrible and they get minimal benefit from it. I suppose some day these guys will realise their arms are the same size as a girls and wonder why?

//rant over about swinging. Does anyone else get p!ssed off with these guys??

Btw easygainer those 2 bars were gorgeous. exactly like a snickers. The other one was manky though!!

Yeah, humping the Swedish bird as I call it. It's a fact of life when someone sees you doing better than them (in this case lifting more) they'll try to emulate it to achieve what you have by whatever means. In this case, they see a decent set of guns and a bug weight so, logically I suppose, they assume more weight bigger arms. The problem is they end ub stressing the wrong muscles - I need to emphasise this as a couple of cheat curls at the end of a set can ADD stress and that's a good thing - a bit of body English on the last couple of lateral raises will do you good.

Another example of this mentality is the abundance of crap "souped up" cars. Someone saw a civic done up with about E30000 in Max Power and decides he can do the same thing for E300 by taking out the cat converter and throwing on a big exhaust and tints - pathetic!

Must try those bars when I'm off the diet - only 3 weeks left!!!

All I'll say to this is - what a crowd of stupid ****ing pricks  With any luck those muppets will give themselves a nice injury someday soon.

But, yes, the dumbbell swings are supposed to be a swinging movement, that might be why the word "swings" is in the name :)
