Can't access router admin on ZyXEL or Medion

I did a search here but didn't find anything yet.
I have an IOLBB account and have the standard Prestige 630 modem that came with it at the start.

I've no problem connecting but I've never been able to connect to it's admin page. http://192.168.1.1/ has always timed out.

I have never given it any thought but today I bought the Wireless LAN Router Modem in Aldi.

I've set that up and have a signal but to set it up it says to go to:

    192.168.0.100

    which also times out.

Can anyone help me out please. I'm completely new to networking etc.

    Thanks in advance

can you give the exact model of each router.

and how youconnect to the router. ie. usb or network lead (the connection(rj45) looks like a big phone jack(rj11))

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 900 ✭✭✭cosgrove80

The IOLBB modem is this one.

I connect it through the phoneline RJ11 and then from the modem into a USB port.

The medion one dosen't have a model number that I can see and I cant find it on the website.

Connected from wall socket > RJ11. Then it came with a USB WLAN adaptor which goes into a USB port.

How about pinging those IP addresses to see if they respond.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 359 ✭✭jayo2004

Hi Just make sure that your network card is set to optain an ip automatically.

    2. go to command promt and type ipconfig with the medion router its usually 192.168.0.2.

    3. ping 192.168.0.1 if you get a reply you are ok

    4. if it times out again download latest version of internet explorer or firefox.

I bought one of these but using it as a dsl router did not work. as soon as i plugged in the dsl cable the dsl light just keeps flashing so i had to use my eircom netopia and just use the medion as a wireless hub.

I was having the same problem with my Median router...

For some reason i could ping 192.168.0.100, but couldn't go to the page to configure it...

Strangely, once I plugged in the DSL cable, it let my in to the configure page...

Sadly, it still can't actually connect to the web... The DSL light keeps blinking as if it's trying to sync, but the status page says there isn't even a connection to sync with...

With Aldi selling a load of them today... I'm hoping somebody will have this sorted soon enough, and will be kind enough to share the knowledge!

I cinnected the medion with the ethernet cable and it connected then at 192.168.0.100. I filled in all the settings. I connected the asdl cable then still with the ethernet still connected but if wouldn't find it.

As you said it just kept blinking saying there was no connection. I've given up. I spent most the day at it and came up with nothing.

Hopefully someone will come to the rescue

    Jayo,

Does that mean you can surf wirelessly? Because thats all i really want to do...
My netopia connects fine, but i'm not sure how to get both of them working together... How did you set up yours?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 359 ✭✭jayo2004

Yes barry i have it working wireless all over the house. I have a server in the garage and have the netopia conneced to that which is shared. The medion is then plugged into my hub. So i have a wireless network for my laptop. For all those people that are having problems and dont have a server like i do you can config your netopia in bridge mode.
    http://www.netopia.com/support/technotes/hardware/r_series/backup/CQG_020.html

Once this is done the netopia is only used for the connection everthing else will have to be setup using the medion (username and passwords, security etc). Connect the netopia to the medion with a network cable.

I have not done this with the medion but have done it with other router's it should work. Hope this helps!!!

Hi, I'm having the same problem with my medion. I've tried different cables and everything but the DSL light just keeps flashing.

I brought it back and got a new one, but still have the same problem.

Wonder if I upgrade the flash will that fix it!

Expensive if it is just a wireless bridge!

unblocked it in exceptions and your local area connection?

I'm only using the Windows Firewall at the moment. I could be wrong but once you open a port on that isn't it open on everything?

Not too experienced in all of this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 359 ✭✭jayo2004

Its nothing to do with the firewall. The dsl light should not be flashing. The light should stay on even when not attached to a pc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,977 ✭✭✭mp3guy

Oh, if the DSL light is flashing, you've got no DSL signal, either way, unplug all phones in the house, or get a line test.

I had similar problems in regards to accessing 192.168.1.1.
So I just reloaded the firmware from ZyXEL for my 623 and all was fine again.

Regaining access to the config section should make the rest of your problems a whole lot easier.

I actually got access to 192.168.0.100 (given in the manual) when I connected it with the ethernet cable.

Regardless of what settings I gave it, it never showed a DSL connection.

Surely when I have it connected to the phone line through the spliter, it should recognise theres a connection regardless of my settings?

A friend of mine who would have a better idea than me what to do is around next week. I'll let him loose at it and see what happens

you are right the settings on your pc have nothing to do with it. The light should stay lighting as soon as you plug it in. I'd say its got to do with a different type of dsl filter or something?????

    hehe you lot

The P630 is a usb MODEM
It is not a router. It has NO admin page :)

Medion actually have a free phone number for Ireland and the UK... open long hours (i was on at 8 on a friday night, and weekends)... (don't have the number handy, but it came on a seperate slip of paper in the box of the router)

I was on to tech support and they just walked me through most of what i'd already tried.. seting 8/35 etc.. PPP settings etc...

The guy on the other end was stumped. He said he'd already had on guy from Ireland that day, who was with Eircom, and he's connected after changing the settings... i'm with EsatBT... but as they are simply renting the lines for Eircom, the settings shouldn't be any different.

Maybe the medion just needs a stronger signal then the Netopia modems that Eircom give...

In the end, i'm just using my medion for it's wireless, and getting the netopia modem to make the DSL connection... which isn't ideal... but i couldn't be bothered bringing it back to Aldi.

I too have bought this Wireless router. It connects not as USB but through the ethernet connection. I too cannot get the ADSL connection to work. When I connect to Tiscali broadband through there USB supplied broadband modem that works fine. Also I know that the Ethernet connection works as I have been able to dial up the 56 k modem and that works ok through the ethernet.

I too have gone through Medions 192.168.0.100 connection to get the router setup connections installed. When I attempt to enter the Tiscasli Broadband information the ADSL flashes but after submitting these parameters the status still shows no connection. Thinking that I had a faulty Router I sent it back to Aldi and they exchanged it for a new one. However there was no improvement, just showed the same problems.

So after trying many options I was forced to phone Medion through I think the Ireland number. The other number can be expensive (I was on the phone for 50 mins) its an 0870 number which is possible 10p a minute. So with my policy for say NO to 0870 I used the Ireland number and got transfered through to the hotline. Also I use 18866 so the whole phone call cost 2p!

Well apart from the saving Medion tried various settings and were totally baffled by the problem. They said that they would enter the problem as a special case and try to get back to me in a day or so. I dont want to give up this router. The price and the scope of functions appeal to me and I think that it is getting to be a bit of a a challenge to me now to get this problem sorted. If others no of a way of solving this problem then their rewards will surely be given in heaven. There appears to be some problem with this router as it has shown to give problems on others ISP's. I am begining to think that there is a generic problem with this particular Router

So I will wait now and see what Medion have to say and hopefully report back. By the way the number I phoned was 01793 815699

    Regards to all Martin

 Hi, I have the same problem with this Medion Router. I rang Medion Tech Support (Freefone 1800-992508). They think the problem`s in the settings. They say they have had a number of Irish customers ringing in with the same complaint. They promised to ring me when they find a solution.

It doesn't work in Ireland. Full stop. I was told to "hang fire" until they come up with a fix. Hang that, I went to Peats and bought one and I'll just get my money back from Aldi.

Does the one in Peats come with the USb adaptor? How much was it?

They have a few - the one I bought didn't have a USB port, was a router only and cost €109.

Now I have it running but the range is limited (thick walls between router and desired working area). Anyone have any ideas how to improve?

A mate of mine bought the median router and just wants to use it for dialup (he's living in a small village in Kerry and hence no broadband). Anyone know if they work ok using the dialup option?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5 tadhgin trean

first post so here goes....I bought one of these medion routers last thursday
I'm still on dialup, basically to get rid of the cables around the house. So far cannot get it to work for dialup, with eircom. I spent a number of hours with it, have had several buddies try it and spent an hour onto the freefone to medion on saturday. A fella called craig on the helpdesk spent a hour at least with me and still no joy... so they are at best very frustrating items to set up
Craig had the bright idea at the end that my current setting might be causing a problem with it and managed to persuade me to delete certain settings with left me without any internet access for a period so just beware of this ....
will prob just return it at this stage

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,522 ✭✭✭digitaldr

thanks for the reply - sorry to hear it's not working for you. My mate isn't very tec savvy and probably won't get around to trying it out for a few weeks. Any idea how long he'd have to return?

Spoke with Medion Tech Support this morning. "Problem with the handshaking. Waiting for firmware upgrade. Will take at least a week."

I dont know how Medion could have sent this out with so many connection problems! Bye the way is it Wireless B or, Wireless G? I believe that G is a better system.

I have previosly telephoned you on two occasions for information in getting my router to work through the adsl connection. We tried all of the obvious settings and also advanced. It appeared that your department in the end were stumped for an answer. They said that they would go away and think about it. My broadband provider is Tiscali and this works fine on their modem. Ethernet works as well, so does the 56 K dialup. Since talking to you I have searched various bulletin boards and realise that my three days of time trying to set up this router are in vain. The one click setup therefore appears to be a mockery to the time that I have spent and cost of phone calls to you (well it could have cost a lot). I do believe in Medion as I have a Titanium PC and other products. However this particular Wireless Router I believe has some inherent problems that are beyond the setup of a normal user. Infact I am quite an expert on computers and I feel sorry for the more knieve computer people who may well think that the problem lies with them! Please therefore could you advise me if this product will ever work for me or do I just have to return it back to the shop and ask for a refund. Thanking you for any help on this matter.

I too am waiting for the firmware fix etc etc having tried all the above, talking to tech support for an hour and so on.
However, mine DOES work, after a fashion  . It takes it about 45 mins from power on to find the dsl signal. I know this makes no sense - surely it either finds the line has dsl immediately or not.
So, if you are having probs and you're sure the other settings in admin are correct, try leaving the thing plugged in for an hour. I'm intrigued to see if this will work for other people.

Hi Digitaldr. Yes I got it to work fine on the 56K modem dialup. Yes I live in the UK. and also would it be possible for you to give to me the adsl modem settings just in case they are different to what I have been given? I tried the one click (easy setup Ha Ha) procedure as well as advanced and in addition with the technician from Medion and as I have said, none of those settings work for me.

I was just looking above to see what Nephster was saying about the adsl locking in after about 40 mins. To me this seems strange as I was thinking that if there was a fundamental fault with the firmware, either it works or not. Do you think that there is a broadband quality signal issue here. Like all electronics if the signal to noise is poor, could it be that for this particular modem the sensitivity of receiving the broadband signal is not as good as some other makes? Incidentally, I have just tried running the router for two hrs but the signal did not lock in at all for me.
    Regards,
    Martin

Believe me I was very surprised when it worked. The first time I'd just sorted out all the wireless part and without further ado I was online. I switched off the device and then when I switched back on I had "no signal", which is when I rang tech support for an hour or so, unplugged it, replugged it etc etc. It was only after I'd left the house for an hour and got back that I noticed the dsl light was steady, not flashing.

Well the Medion Firmware has finally arrived on the driver download site. I have to say that after all of this time waiting I was quite eager and excited to download the firmware and install the latest version. Well it was C.R.A.P. Computer Router A Problem!

Did not make any difference for me and I was totally dissapointed. I think that I have waited to long and will now be looking for a replacement. They did say at Medion that there will be some more firmware that they will follow on, but when I commited them to a date it was maybe this week or a month , so they really didnt know of a firm release date.

However maybe this recent download may help others so I will be interested in those who do get it to work (or do not)

No, didn't work for me either. I updated it and left it on for over an hour like the other post said but still no joy.

At least they are actively doing something. Got a nice light show when it was updating too :)

Its just the waiting all of the time. Even if Medion bring out another Fix, will that work. I took my tepephone cables apart today to check that the incoming cables were connected properly. Everything tested out as for the BT wiring plan, so its not that as a problem. Thought that I should at least eliminate that one.

    I feel a headache coming on!

I've decided to give it a another week. If I don't have a solution by then I'm going to bring it back and get one elsewhere.

Dabs have a good selection (I'm looking for the usb stick ones) that actually work out cheaper. Even including postage.

Would probably get the 3com one but they have none in stock.

The Belkin is the other option. It works out at €115 so I was wrong about it being cheaper than the Medion.

I don't know much about network gear but I think Belkin are decent.

Id assume it'd work here? There are much better people on boards than me to ask about this stuff :)

At the moment I think I'll just hang on to the Medion, out of laziness more than anything

I spoke to Medion's tech support today who told me that they are still working on firmware for the problems; the last posted v1.0.1 update was only for IP forwarding.
The next release (they claim) will fix the following problems:
    • DSL line 'training' (hopefully for both GB & ROI exchanges)
    • Error on pressing [Apply] in Ethernet 'Expert Mode'
    • VPN pass-through
If these are fixed, the unit is not too bad a deal with the USB adaptor thrown in (and that dial-up modem).

However, here are some tips for anyone considering alternatives:
    • Dabs have announced £5 ex-VAT delivery to anywhere in ROI, although they won't guarantee next-day. This is a major catch with most other MO outfits, who surcharge for so-called 'offshore' delivery because, as we all know, there are no distribution depots outside the GB mainland ;)
    • Whatever you're buying, if Dabs sell it you should look at their product details page as they show customer reviews on the same page
    • As it happens, I don't actually work for Dabs and, to prove it, try looking at www.savastore.com and www.misco.co.uk for a wider range and some pretty keen prices, many lower than Dabs (but with that nasty NI/ROI delivery surcharge)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14 Martin100

I was just wondering as Medion appear to admit that there is a Firmware problem, how many people have an ADSL problem? My guess is that hundreds of units have been sold in the UK and ROI. Do we know of any users of this Router who have had success with this Router and if so what IPS and setup conditions were used for their success?

    Regards,
    Martin

MP3 guy: (looking at your signature picture)

Best way to splice phonelines with no real proper equipment.

Get an electrical connector with a screw down terminal (the little white things that you can break apart like what you'd find behind a light fitting)

get your phoneline pair (you only need 2 wires, ignore any other connections.. should be red and green or blue/white pair on eircom lines/Cat5)

Pare a good bit of the plastic coating back exposing the copper.

Twist the cables you want to join together pretty tightly, making sure you get the maximum surface area touching.

Then use one side of the electrical connector as a clamp to hold them together. Just screw it tight.

do the same with the other set of cables, obviously using a different electrical connector as a clamp.

You twist the cables together and use the electrical connector as a clamp as you will get far better signal quality on copper-to-copper rather than going through an electrical connector that's designed to carry 220V 50Hz AC.

Also, if you're working on phoneline it's a good idea to put the call divertion on! If your phone rings you get a nice 75V AC shock if you happen to be touching both cables simultaniously :)

Also, I wouldn't suggest using sellotape like that. Phone circuits carry quite a bit of power and have high ring voltages (up to 75V-90V) so you can get some nasty sparking that can cause a fire.

At the very least use decent electrical tape.

    Medion Wireless Router MD 95038
    :):):)

Well success at last. After having downloaded the latest firmware I can now report that my ADSL signal (ISP Tiscali) is now working. Initially though for some reason the Firmware wouldnt load up, but read the PDF notes and follow these and it should be ok.

I am told by Medion that it is better to set up the ADSL in Expert mode.

Phew and I thought that it would never work!

    Hi Cosgrove,

The light came on after about 5 mins. I still think that for some setups you might have to wait for up tp 45 mins for sync connection. There is yet some further Firmware coming out soon to address some minor problems. Hopefully if yours doesnt work now it might with this later update.

Have you been in touch with Medion regarding your sprecific setup? I think that overall I must have spent about 3 and half hours with them over about 7 phone calls. They have even phoned me back asking me to try certain setups and also informing me as for yesterday that the second revision of the Firmware was coming out that day and asked that I could try it out and report back.

I have to say that they have also been proactive to some extent with me (the customer) so I congratulate them for that.

Heres wishing for good future connections to all.

    Regards,
    Martin
