Formal qualifications to become a personal trainer?

Does anyone know if you need formal qualifications to become a fitness trainer/??? I was considering setting myself up as one. Also do you need to be able to do all the excersises yourself or is it enough to know how to do them?? It would be great if someone had some thoughts on the matter?/
